I just have a question. There are lots of talks about this game but it haven't appeared in Russia till now. The whole point is, that all the gaming world of my country is waiting for it. And we all have got used that many of our 'pirates' :) issue in sale all products even earlier than you got it. So, maybe it's some scripting algorithm used in EU or other problem? Maybe, someone knows. And the 2-nd thing: it's not enough information on the Russian part of the game, and i hope somebody will inform me from those who already played!?
Thanx beforehand!

Well, Ill tell you about playing Russia. Its lots of fun, they should wipe out the Muslim Khanates quickly. Then they should expand into Siberia. After this go west, and beat up on Poland, Turkey, Sweden, and the Germans. Russia should work hard to fix its economy. If Russia can even have a mediocre economy, it will be the strongest state in Europe. Also, build lots, and lots, and lots of infantry, they cost 3d, compared to 10-15d in Western countries.

I can't imagine such thing. It's interesting, but in 1492 Russia have been wils wildcountry, Moskow - had the population about several thousands and in the place of St-Petersburg (5 million people now, there i'm from) - were swamps. Peter I in the early beginning of the 18-th century founded it, made it the European City and the capital of Imperia. So, it's interesting to know, were these and most other facts illustrated in the game? In 1492 - nothing, but in 1792 - were able to safe the world by defeating Napoleon. (1812 - exactly)???

in 1492 Russia was laready the largest state in Europe. It was definetely not the most advanced technologically, but it was still relatively strong. As far as level of government and centralization was concerned it was not very different (and in some respects even more developed) than say France or England.
As far as your question abour pirates is concerned, the game is currently out in German and Swedish - languages that are not widely known to a gaming community in Russia.

Yes, Russia appears to be a software desert, flooded with mafia type activity that doesn't give a damn about property and copyright.

No wonder nobody ever cares to issue anything called legal software there, marketing it would be a waste of money I guess.

it is not as bad as it used to be several years ago, but it is still pretty much the case - you can buy any European or American computer game for as low as 3 dollars or even less...

Generally, I agree with you, but it is a thing that helps to understand - it's now other exit from the situation than Average salary lays in the limit of 100 a month. 'Your' prices are too high for common people.
2 Oranje: You aren't fully right. The legal business in Russia is rising. As a result, recently appears companies like Buka, 7Wolf, 1C, who purchase the rights of game, translate it (likely, but optional) & sell Us, maybe a little more expensively, than pirates do. And russian developers like Nival, Nikita, Amber, Snowball, NMG.. have learned to make really good things. So, it's time of changes. In the quality & legal side, i think. :)

 Check a history book or your copy of EU. Russia was a lot smaller in 1492 than you'd think. Of course, it expanded extremely quickly. By 1540, it included the area represented in the game by Pskov and took Astrakhan in that year, having already conquered Kazan and the Golden Horde.

Even without Kazan and Astrakahn - which were actually conquered later than 1540 (1552 and 1556 respectively) - Russia was the largest state in Europe in 1492 not counting the Turkish empire.

and as far as Pskov is concerned it was finally incorporated into the Russian state in 1510, but it was hardly an indipenedent entity at least since Novogorod was taken in 1476. So, in most repects in 1492 Pskov was part of Russia. Unoftunately, I do not have exact population figures for European countires in late 15th century. I would doubt if Russia was the most populous country (It was most probably not), but it was definitely realy big compared to any other country in Europe with the exception of Turkey and Poland-Lithuania.

Depends if you count Poland+Lithuania as separate, or joined country. It was the largest european territory, IIRC.

Do what? Save the world? Against Napoleon?
Defeat of Napoleon cheered nobody except conservatives, feudals and Brits.

Oh, and none of British allies, France's 'forced allies' and conquored countries were happy? Nappie had bled France of men for years: none of the families in France who had given sons to his war machine were happy the warfare was over?
Pretty narrow view IMHO.

Napolean was a dictator who took advantage of a time of change, as so many tyrants have throughout history. For all the good he did (creation of stable law, so on) his plundering of conquered lands and oppression of those people even as he spoke of 'French Liberty' was a tremendous injustice. Hitler and Stalin have him beat of course, but not by much.

From what can be seen of Russia in EU screenshots and in most history books (I don't care WHAT country they are published in!), Russia in 1492 was not larger than a number of other political entities. It was still in a state largely well-described by Dobryi, and its centuries-long hatred of the PLC and Sweden stem from this and subsequent periods when both those countries easily and repeatedly dominated it and the rest of the Baltic and the rest of the Eastern European regions. From what I have read in the posts here, it sounds like the Russian has the advantage of numbers (cheap troops), and a lot of wealth that CAN be developed if she chooses to invest it wisely. From a historical viewpoint it becomes probably a question as to whether Russia will choose wise investment or follow in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's path of refusing, or being unable, to do so.

While Russia may have been Napoleon's ultimate undoing, it is probable that the French empire would have disintegrated eventually anyway for a number of political and economic reasons. Some evidence for this can be seen in Braudel's seminal work on the economic history of Europe. (This is a killer series of volumes that are worth the wretchedly high price!)
