Yes, I agree, its deep and real, I'll give the Canal one that, but you know, for me, I get a little depressed with real humanity from time to time, and I like to watch a little historicized fiction from time to time. the Showtime one does that for me, as it allows me to escape a little bit, while at the same time get a contextual frame for if I really want to research the actual truth later on.I'll admit I haven't watched the Showtime series myself. However, the Canal+ series gives so much depth and complexity to the era, (for instance taking four episodes to lead up to Rodrigo's election instead of the Showtime series' one). That complexity more than makes up for John Doman having an American accent (plus the accent didn't really bother me after an episode or two). I also like how every character is flawed, because it gives a more realistic portrayal of the times. Plus the Canal+ one just goes into so much more historical detail that I've found myself looking up events in the series to see if they happened, and all of the time they did. The only significant historical liberty that's taken in the show is the timeframe is sped up, which is understandable so they don't need to spend more on makeup and it creates a heightened dramatic feel. They even spend a significant amount of time on Lucrezia's governorship of Spoleto to show her as a competent administrator.
