Caterina Sforza

777-CaterinaSforza1.jpg

Known as the "tiger of Forlì", she was a powerful ruler in central Italy during the Renaissance. She had a passion for hunting, warfare an alchemy. She used to say she would bow to no man. Her stubborness eventually led her into a conflict with the powerful papal Borgia family. A cruel woman for cruel times, when she was sieged in her own keep and her son was being held in front of the walls and threatened of death, she shouted at her enemies to feel free to kill him, for she had the means to produce more sons, and then proceeded to show her intimate lower parts to the besieging army.

Lucrezia Borgia

Bartolomeo_Veneto_001.jpg

Really needs no introduction, the quintessential femme fatale. She was rumoured to be a murderer, a poisoner, and an insatiable she-devil who would indulge in orgies and incest. We don't know how much of it was actually slanders, but we know she was the lover of the most powerful men of her time.
Have you also been watching "The Borgias" on Netflix, like me?

See, for me every peasant woman who managed to live an honest full of hard work life as simple as it was and raise a bunch of kids to be good people is worth more than all those bloodied bitches of power and fame combined...

You can't hold people of many centuries past to the same standards you would hold someone who's grown up in a 21st century world.

Yes because as we all know in our century and the past one our leaders didnt commit the same things /sarcasm.

The thing is, there ain't such a thing as immoral behavior when it comes down to discussing rulers. They are to be judged by whether they were helpful or detrimental to their nation, rather than some abstact humanity (which has never existed in the first place). Queen of Spain being condemned for driving jews off Spain is as stupid as Russians talking crap about Hitler because he invaded USSR. It makes no sense.

It's still not okay (as in: morally excusable) to murder, drive away, settle in a death camp someone or someones when they are of different race, religion or nationality...

I do hope you're referring to the "Borgia: Faith and Fear" from Canal+, and not the inferior Showtime series. :)
Sorry. I tried both, but I can't get past the Castilian Pope with an American accent. I find I also hate everyone in the Italian one, which makes it hard to care about anyone enough to get through it. I am willing to suspend historical reality enough for the sake of likeable scoundrels like only Jeremy Irons can perfect. IMHO of course ;)

Portret_Królowej_Jadwigi_w_ZSP_6_Piotrków_Tryb_by_Ron.jpg

Was she mentioned? King Jadwiga Jagiellon, the woman who saved Lithuania from Teutonic order and was key person to start events which led to forming of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Also, let's not forget Jeanne de Clisson, "Breton Lioness", a noblewoman pirate and mother of seven, who specifically hunted down French nobility for 13 years. Then retired, settled down, and peacefully died at the age of 59. Her ghost is said to haunt Clisson castle in Brittany.

I'm so glad that the Paradox development team is hard at work on feminist propaganda rather than fixing the game!
Actually, I think the games could use a bit MORE feminist propaganda, just to irk people like this. I find it funny someone gets angry when women are recognized as being important in history by a game company that makes historical games. Not to mention, Regina is not in that department, she's in PR, so what is the harm?

I swear. Out of all the threads, this one has the worst commenters.

What's so bad about that comment? Seems like an apt statement.

I'll admit I haven't watched the Showtime series myself. However, the Canal+ series gives so much depth and complexity to the era, (for instance taking four episodes to lead up to Rodrigo's election instead of the Showtime series' one). That complexity more than makes up for John Doman having an American accent (plus the accent didn't really bother me after an episode or two). I also like how every character is flawed, because it gives a more realistic portrayal of the times. Plus the Canal+ one just goes into so much more historical detail that I've found myself looking up events in the series to see if they happened, and all of the time they did. The only significant historical liberty that's taken in the show is the timeframe is sped up, which is understandable so they don't need to spend more on makeup and it creates a heightened dramatic feel. They even spend a significant amount of time on Lucrezia's governorship of Spoleto to show her as a competent administrator.
