I would prefer if the colonial flags looked like this:

Isn't that the British Red Ensign, in addition the flag of the Kingdom of Hawai'i?

It'd be nice if Australia/New Zealand/South Africa and the other empty province places got the same treatment as America though, especially as they aren't important enough to ever merit expansions of their own.

I suppose they'd be included in an expansion that deals with Asian colonisation, though.

No, conquering would just set up a new colony of yours from those provinces. I.e. you're not supposed to directly own provinces in the New World.

So, the purists would have to conquer an island or two in each region to forward the trade and limit their expansion to these provinces, if they do not want to deal with new colonial issues.

Why would anyone take this attitude?
A trade center province. I want to build it up with all proper trade buildings. A colonial nation may not have that as priority.

It's too bad that this seems to only apply to the new world. Having India split off into a "British East India Company" colony state would have been a nice touch as well. Maybe next time.

I would say it's a good development strategy. They should experiment with a one part of the world, especially rich in colonies during that time period. Once they iron out the bugs and learn from their mistakes, they may apply these changes to the East.

Although, I would guess, it would be Australia, Indonesia and Oceania next and only then India... which should be a special case, whichever way you look at it.

Yeah and maybe add some specificities for other parts of land too, so "colonize africa" and "colonize america" would bring different type of game on the table. This would actually be quite awesome.

Political mapmode broken or something?

Nice update. I'm a bit concerned it'll gimp my play when I'm a colonial power. As Portugal, for example, even with the maus I think most of my manpower was pretty quickly from overseas. Now I may be stuck waiting for my "allies" to ship guys to where I'm actually fighting. But, we'll see how it all goes, and I have to admit it's a good deal closer to reality than the 100% control we have now. It'd be nice, at some point, to name our own colonial states, too.

But, we'll see how it all goes, and I have to admit it's a good deal closer to reality than the 100% control we have now. It'd be nice, at some point, to name our own colonial states, too.

My high school history is a bit rusty, but I can't remember a single event of brazilians being shipped to Portugal (or Spain under Filipe) to fight the latter nation's wars. So perhaps this is WAD, and colonial powers with smaller starting manpower pool will have to look at other ways to fight their wars.

As a Portugal (for some of others) there would be even more incentive to go East rather than try to mimic Spanish empire in the West. Of course, why choose? One could go for both and experience the best of the both worlds, both Old and New.

Seeing how useless and passive vassal/ally AI is in EU4, I'd rather not have all my colonies become useless subnations that don't help me in any form, aside from a few ducats that too have no real use.

Then you are probably playing a different game than 99% of people here, because in MY game vassals attach to my armies and allies reinforce battles I´m fighting.

I'd like an option to take direct control of their military like you can in Vicky 2.
Also, what about the most important thing;
Will we be able to rename provinces we colonize? I always rename provinces I colonize into something that sounds more appropiate for my nation.

I couldn't care less for Amerindians but that is the feature that will make me buy the expansion.

Question: When we reach 5 colonies in a region and they becomes a semi-independent, do we get the option to tag switch, like when we release a vassal?

Also, unlike vassal tag switch, would this be allowed in Ironman?

+1. Vassals do help quite a lot if you make them grow, not just to annex them with free cores. They're nice, especially the ones in the different continents. And well, they often just attach themseles to your armies and cause attrition, but they are more likely to take initiative in engaging enemies when they feel they are sufficiently powerful to do so...

And I personally like having vassals in different continents. I'd rather have a 15-province vassal than 15 overseas provinces, and even in your home continent, the combined sum of you and your vassals is always greater than if you had annexed all of them right away. I went crazy with vassals while refusing to annex anything that does not border me directly as Ethiopia, for a simple reason that anything unconnected in Europe and Asia would be distant overseas. Maybe I should have just killed the Ottomans sooner... but by the time I revoked the privilegia I was already playing vassal pokemon. Gotta vassaliz'em all! HRE, I choose you!

I'd rather have the option at all times (what if you would like to see the colony grow first and then switch).
