Hey Forumites!

I am thinking about buying Europa Universalis 4. With owning Crusader Kings 2 and many mayor DLC i came to the conclusion that there are several DLC you mostly needed to play in certain places in the world.
If my intention would be to play in the old world, mostly in the Holy Roman Empire at start - what DLC would you say are essential (Or is there even a DLC Pack with some good starter DLC?
And additionally: Any recommendations for a good beginners start?

Thank you very much!
Will try the PC Demo, now :)

See the wiki for a list of the DLCs and features: http://www.eu4wiki.com/Downloadable_content

In EU4 there are two expansions that mostly affect the New World: Conquest of Paradise and El Dorado (the latter also includes nation designer). Two expansions are very generic and have a mishmash of features: Art of War and Common Sense. Especially the former is important for the HRE due to the religious wars. Wealth of Nations mostly affects naval traders, especially colonizers. Res Publica is minor, but has content for the Netherlands and Poland.

Art of War is pretty much universally recommended. You'll want it no matter where or what you play.

Common Sense adds a lot of core features, most notably provincial developments (upgrades). I'd highly recommend it, as it enhances theocracies, OPMs, Protestants, etc.

The Cossack will be released first day of December. It's not going to be on sale any time soon, plus *cough*bugs and balance issues*cough*, so you might want to hold off on it for a bit.

Wealth of Nation you don't really need since it doesn't sound like you want to establish trade companies in Africa and the Far East, though it does add some minor useful features like enforce military access/fleet basing rights, transfer trade power, religious fervor. Not something I'd recommend as a starter DLC, though.

Res Publica is only recommended if you want to play as republics, especially the Dutch and merchant republics such as Lübeck in the HRE.

You don't need Conquest of Paradise or El Dorado at all if you intend to focus in the Old World, espeically as HRE.

The content of every DLC has been "controversial" to some degree. (Fairly similar degree IMO.) Also, any 1.14 problems and updates are almost equally likely to affect you whether you buy the DLC or not, if past is any indication.

That said, I always recommend waiting until release before buying something.

Castille is usually recommended as a good beginner start, due to its large-ish size in 1444, its peripheral location in Europe allowing it to stay out of most wars if it wants (while still being able to participate), and its nearly-unrivaled ability to colonize, which is a very important part of EU IV thematically. Otherwise, if you want to play in the HRE…hmmm. I've only ever played as Austria, which was fun, but also had all the responsibilities of being emperor. I think Bohemia might be a decent "starting out in HRE" country; they're one of the biggest (if not the biggest) country in the HRE at start, have expansion opportunities outside the HRE to the northeast, and are an elector so you can have fun choosing the next emperor, or even go for being emperor yourself if you want.

I tried the PC Demo and did not understand very much to be honest. While Austria was very confusing Portugal seemed to be managable to me. So at first it will be no Holy Roman Empire but more Castille as mentioned above.

I guess i will buy just plain Vanilla and try to learn the game before getting the other DLC.
Thank you very much!

If you have friends who own the different DLC's you can play multiplayer - as long as they host the game you will have access to all the DLC features :)
(As well as helping you if you run into a confusing situation)
Then you can also decide which features have the most value for you.

From a game control point of view, you definitely want the DLCs that allow transfer of occupation and national focus. I don't really know which DLCs they are, I think they're Art of War and Res Publica (I think this part Res Publica might have been included in another DLC: El Dorado, maybe?).
