Well come on what are you doing? Don't need to know the nuts and bolts, just the era would be nice. Just a hint please.

WOW I thought god was speaking for a moment.

Personally I do not want to see EU3 or any other game using the EU engine. Because if you make a new game I will:

Loose my job
Loose my friends
Go broke
Loose eyesight
etc etc..

So please stop it.

....and that's what the Scenario Editor is for;)

Seriously I think you could do quite a nice game based on Middle Earth or similar large fantasy setting (Eddings anyone) with the EU2 engine. Alot of the magic could be handled by events. Consider also the Videssos milleu created by Harry Turtledove. If we could just persuade them to tell us how to create a new map....

My bet would be on something where you can have fun making the rules and the gameplay historical, but where no-one will complain about the historicity of the long-term outcome. So colonization of a randomly generated world, or noble factions competing inside a (possibly random) state.

But consider why such requests come so many times.

I suspect the biggest culprit is the popularity of World War II films like Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line and Enemy at the Gates.

Not in the least. WWII has been a staple of board wargaming since the 1970s and of computer wargaming since computer wargaming became a market. One might as well claim that "A Knight's Tale" is responsible for the popularity of Europa Universalis for all the sense crediting Hollywood for the popularity of the WWII period would make.

What I see people actually wanting is a game that could start us out as early as imaginable and end up at the current day. It's not a fad they want but scope. The problem is that the longer period a game covers, the more daft and absurd measures have to be taken to force that game to adhere to "historical" paths.

Eventually, it's no longer a game but an animated textbook that the "player" can onlly passively watch.

WWI & WWII is out of the question!!!! been there, seen it, done it!

SCI-FI and Fantasy, Nope!!! ( from the man himself )

That leaves Ancient / Dark Age / Early Middle Ages with a hugely detailed map of Europe and the Middle East, expand the combat somewhat and there you have it.

What a GAME!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the Edinburgh Universalis forum everybody.

(now there's an idea!)
I thought that EU stood for Edinburgh Universalis, are you saying it doesn't? That could seriously upset my world view. Scotland get gubbed? Of course we will, but isn't that the point of supporting Scotland. Well enjoy your sword training I will collect the 20 ducats some other time.

Okay, here's what I'd like to see in terms of games based on the EU engine:

Roman Universalis - Roman Empire ~250 BC to AD 450

Barbarian Universalis - Dark Ages Europe ~AD 450 to AD 1050

Medieval Universalis - Medieval Europe ~AD 1050 to AD 1450

Even better would be if those games allowed you to play in Africa, China or America, 4 games in one! Play as the Middle Kingdom and fight off Mongols in 1200, conquer Central America as the Mayas in 200BC, endless replay!

The EU2 engine on a random world, or even a world with a "random" new world (different continents/islands/nothing there in some games) would be extremely interesting. You could still script events for the Euro/Asian powers, but the universally loathed AmerInds wouldn't have to exist. And the humans wouldn't be able to rush for the key provinces because they aren't always the same.

Reverse the order and I would agree with you.:) Well with a few adjustments to the start and end times.
