Salve, Paradox fans! I am Alhazen, otherwise known as Zaknafien from the Europa Barbarorum team. If you do not know, Europa Barbarorum, or "EB", is one of the premier modifications for Sega's award-winning Rome: Total War game, known for its attention to detail and historical accuracy.

I am pleased to announce the beginning of something the omens have foretold to be auspicious, that being EB is coming to Paradox's newest game, Europa Universalis: ROME!

As EU:R is still in its development stages, you can expect some serious research and concepting to be going on with the EU/EB team, and some serious recruiting of experienced EU modders.

That's right, we need your help! As our team is primarily dedicated to modding RTW/M2TW engine-games, we know little of the Europa Universalis engine and its limitations/capabilities. While we are eager to learn and will do our best, we need serious, dedicated coders, scripters, and graphics artists to join the Europa Barbarorum team to bring this modificaiton to EU:Rome!

If you are interested in seeing a game devoted to total historical accuracy and detail for all of the intriguing cultures and interesting peoples of this fascinating period in history, please, do not hesistate to apply within.

YES!

i've said this before and i'll say it again, EB is hands down the best mod for RTW ever, and i have no doubt the same will be true for EU: Rome.

i know you guys are only in the planning stages, but tell us a little bit about what you have in mind: MICs? different government types? various stages of military reform? stretching the map all the way to the indus river like in RTW: EB?

also, i know you guys are working on EB2 for M2TW. does this mean you guys will be doing double duty, or will you be creating an entirely new team for EU: Rome?

in any case, godspeed and good luck. looking forward to your work (and EB 1.0 as well :p )!

Well, I would imagine we will have to wait for the game to get into beta testing at least before things are finalized, but using EU III as a basis, I can see us bringing unique national ideas to each culture, a plethora of historical and pseudo-historical events, a more realistic map that covers the maximum area possible based on province limitations, in-depth character development with many various traits/vices/virtues or what-not, as detailed a combat model as possible with accurate historical unit-types and variety, etc.

We will probably be assembling a new team for this project, with several of us old-guard EB types serving as directors and historical advisors. I've already posted wanted-ads for skilled EU/CK/ modders who are interested in this project.

Great to have you on board mate! I imagine we'll be doing most of the development work at the EB forum, but Ive set up help wanted ads among the major boards here to get some skilled EU III modders on the team until we learn the ropes of the engine. Our biggest contribution will be the reams of historical information we've accumulated over the years.

Coolness. Now if they could only merge the games. TWs tactical battle engine and graphics with Paradox's superior diplomacy, event engines, etc.

I shudder to think which engine's AI we would be getting. ;) Or what kind of a PC it would require to run.

Interesting to see you EB folks over here, looking forward to future results!

What little I know of EUIII moddability, there are NO province limitations.

Go on frenzy.

Just one request, could you please leave the nation names in English? They are the only thing that annoys me in EB, I feel that using native languages is just pretentious. I want to know what nation I am destroying, afterall. With RTWs limited nations it is still somewhat doable but EU:R will kill me

I don't speak for the team, EvilSanta, but I would guess that much of our overall philosophy will remain the same between RTW and EU franchises. For us, regional languages (for units, buildings, provinces, etc) add to the immersion, which is an important aspect of the mod development.

It may be possible to develop regional and english-only languages in parallel for EU:R-EB.

But it's too soon to say anything definitive yet. :)

I agree - English only should be default, with the "extra" version being native language. Theres just too many countries in an EU game for native naming to be practical.

I'd wait for one of our linguist-types to answer with authority, but if regional languages are used in an EB mod for EUR, it would most likely be based on cultures, not nations or nation states. so there wouldn't be hundreds or anything.

For example, there would probably be only one proto-germaic language for all of the germanic tribes represented by several provinces.

Well, as I study linguistics, it's mostly the other way around in that kind of situation. If there's a lot of tribes that keep to their villages and no greater unification, there's probably as many languages as there's tribes. For example in New Guinea there are over a thousand different languages and a person from a random tribe needs only to go to the next valley to find people whom he doesn't understand.

Of course the tropical terrain of New Guinea is quite a bit different than that in which the Germanic tribes lived. Also, people in Europe 2,000 years ago probably moved around more than New Guinea's natives. But there was still a large number of different languages, not one protolanguage everybody could understand.
