Hi

I play as Malacca on hard ironman. I have formed a colonial nation in Australia but I can't get started with colonialism as institution. There should be some progress because of "Port/Capital of Country with a New World Colonial Nation +0,83", right?

When I played as Aragon recently, I think it was working OK and I got one merchant for each colonial nation. Does it have to grow to some size before I get colonialism growth and additional merchant?

Australia isnt part of the new world so you will have to get a cn in america for colonialism to spread in your provinces.

For anyone who has seen and tested it, can you confirm that the AI vassal release issue in the most recent patch is indeed due to them going over their GC?
If so, I'm thinking that modding the AI to have virtually unlimited GC via difficulty settings would at least be temporary fix for the issue.
What do you guys think?

Activating a DLC in a running campaign usually causes problems. I didn't test this, but I think that the monuments won't work correctly, but the provinces modifiers which they replace in some cases will be gone(e.g. the missionary from owning Jerusalem).

If you still have a save from before you bought the new DLC, I'd recommend turning off the DLC until you finish out your current game. If you've already loaded the save with the DLC enabled, whatever damage it will cause is already done; double check achievements are still enabled if you're after some, and keep playing. Any weirdness you didn't notice immediately probably won't hurt you much, though some AI countries may spontaneously combust if something drastic changed for them

I just bought this game because steam is selling it for 80% off, and it sounds good.

I've tried a few games on "easy", but always get frustrated by getting my ass kicked instantly, and restart another game. I've read the manual, done the tutorials, looked thru this forum, but over half of the stuff on the screen has no explanation, like why can't my attacking armies advance into an enemy province? Ok, I understand I have to declare war first, but even then, I take over a province, and I can't advance any further? And WTF is this "looming disaster" and how do I prevent it?

Specifically, last 2 games I waited a number of turns to build up my army, and give myself a "cb" I guess they're called, then attacked aragon to take over valencia. The first game, I'm still laying siege to their fort, when they and their allies show up and take over province after province of mine, including laying siege to a fort of mine, and taking it with a much smaller army in half the time it's taking me to take over theirs!

So, generally, any help understanding this game, and answering the above questions would be appreciated.

Specifically, here are my questions...

How do I combine multiple units into a single army, so I don't have to move four of them individually?

What qualifies as a "light" ship to patrol trade nodes?

WTF is "trade power" and why would I send money to someone else downstream?

Am I being too bellicose? I wasn't involved in a war for the first 15 years, and it just seemed like all I was doing was sitting around waiting for new notifications (so fun!).

One of the information boxes when I declared war showed the various forces at our disposals, and it was very favorable to me. Where did all the thousands of enemy reinforcements suddenly come from?

Why did one of my armies advance directly from Teruel to Calatayud without any problem, but another HAD to go thru Soria, resulting in them getting crushed one at a time, instead of showing up with superior force at the same time?

What's the functional difference between infantry and cavalry?

When I'm in a battle, what are all those yellow and red numbers and messages that show up over my army's head and then disappear?

How do enemy reinforcements suddenly show up at the most inopportune (for me) time?

Why can't I pursue the defeated army to destroy it?

How do I separate 1 or 2 units from my army?

How do I develop technology?

What are these "estates" and why do I care?

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but I think it'll do for a start. Thanks in advance for your help.

So, generally, any help understanding this game, and answering the above questions would be appreciated.

Specifically, here are my questions...

Wow, that's a lot of questions, and it would be possible to write a short essay to answer each one. Instead, I'm going to write short answers and refer you to the EU4 wiki, which contains a lot more background info. You might also try watching some strategy guides on youtube that are aimed at new players.

How do I combine multiple units into a single army, so I don't have to move four of them individually?

Select multiple units with shift-left-click, or by draggina a box around them. The "merge" button is in the top right of the unit window.

What qualifies as a "light" ship to patrol trade nodes?

It's the second largest ship, costing approx 20 gold. At game start, they are "barques", then later "caravels" and various types of frigate.

WTF is "trade power" and why would I send money to someone else downstream?

Trade power is a reflection of your power over trade in that node. You can only collect trade for free in one trade node; usually it's best to do this as far "downstream" as possible. (You can collect in multiple nodes, but there is a cost associated.) Your other merchants are used to try to steer as much trade as possible into that final node where you collect everything.

Am I being too bellicose? I wasn't involved in a war for the first 15 years, and it just seemed like all I was doing was sitting around waiting for new notifications (so fun!).

In your first 15 years, you would normally launch an offensive war at least twice but probably not as many as 5 times. It's usually a good idea to prepare several different options at the same time, and watch out for a moment when one of your targets is weak.

One of the information boxes when I declared war showed the various forces at our disposals, and it was very favorable to me. Where did all the thousands of enemy reinforcements suddenly come from?

Probably mercenaries. If you have enough gold, you can temporarily significantly boost your forces by using mercs, but the cost is pretty extreme and can ruin your nation in the long run. If the AI hires mercs and you can wipe them out quickly, it'll take a looong time for the AI to bounce back.

Why did one of my armies advance directly from Teruel to Calatayud without any problem, but another HAD to go thru Soria, resulting in them getting crushed one at a time, instead of showing up with superior force at the same time?

I'm not going to look at exactly where these provinces are, but my guess is that the answer is probably "forts". You can't march an army past a fort that's under control of your enemy. (But there are a LOT of exceptions, to the point where a comprehensive fort movement guide is almost impossible. If you want your armies to be able to reinforce each other, it's very important that you check that they are able to move in the way you expect.)

What's the functional difference between infantry and cavalry?

Cavalry are much more expensive but have a lot more "shock" value, which is particularly useful in the early part of the game when the "fire" phase of combat has virtually no effect. But, an army with "too much" cavalry gets significant penalties in combat, so a cav-only army is a bad idea. (Unless you're a steppe horde.)

When I'm in a battle, what are all those yellow and red numbers and messages that show up over my army's head and then disappear?

Battle progress or casualties or something. Click on one of the armies to see the main battle window, where you can in theory drill down into what each individual sub-unit is doing.

How do enemy reinforcements suddenly show up at the most inopportune (for me) time?

The army is losing morale at X/day. So, morale will be zero in Y days. If there's an army nearby that can arrive in less than Y days (and that might make a difference), it's worth sending it over. If not, retreat asap.

Why can't I pursue the defeated army to destroy it?

Maybe they are retreating behind a fully-manned fort? As noted above, you can't walk past an enemy fort.

How do I separate 1 or 2 units from my army?

There's a "new unit" button on the right-hand side of the army window - two green arrows pointing left and right, one above the other.

How do I develop technology?

Accumulate several hundred monarch points of the relevant type (admin/diplo/mil). When you have enough, go to the tech screen to spend them on the next tech level.

What are these "estates" and why do I care?

Powerful factions in your nation. If you're nice to them, they'll give you bonuses. If you're nasty, maluses or rebels. If they become too powerful, they'll launch a coup (but this is not as flavorful as it sounds). Taking their land makes them very unhappy. But you want to take all their land over the long term, otherwise you'll be at a disadvantage in the age of absolutism (from ~1610). Overall, the estates are one more thing you need to balance to be successful.

I don't have time to answer all your questions, but I have a few general tipps: the game has a lot of tooltips and looking at them would help you understand what is happening. For example the tooltip for the looming disaster notification would show you what disaster is about to happen and what contributes to its progress. If you prevent these factors, you might be able to prevent the disaster. If you click on the notification you will get to the stability screen which has an icon for the disaster and its tooltip will tell you what you have to do to stop the progress completely. In case you can't stop the progress(likely if the disaster is the Castilian civil war), the disaster will happen and then you should try to end it as soon as possible. The tooltip in the stability tab will then tell you how to end it. If you want to know before hand, you can read about disasters on the wiki. In general the wiki is a very good resource if you want to know how the game works. Looking up the specific things in the wiki would answer several of your questions.

What's the functional difference between infantry and cavalry?
Cavalry is somewhat stronger, but you get penalties if you use too many of them. But cavalry is much more expensive, so the general recommendation is to not use any cavalry.
When I'm in a battle, what are all those yellow and red numbers and messages that show up over my army's head and then disappear?
these are the soldiers who die
How do I combine multiple units into a single army, so I don't have to move four of them individually?
move all to the same province and then select them all and look at all the buttons which you can press
Specifically, last 2 games I waited a number of turns to build up my army, and give myself a "cb" I guess they're called, then attacked aragon to take over valencia. You don't siege faster with more units. But if you have less than the minimum needed units(depends on the maximum garrison of the fort) you won't siege at all. To win a war, try to siege more forts at the same time than the enemy
Why did one of my armies advance directly from Teruel to Calatayud without any problem, but another HAD to go thru Soria
They have different return provinces and a fort is restricting their movement. How that works exactly is very complicated and only very few people understand it completely. If you prefer the movement of one army, you can transfer all regiments of the other army into that army. The

Thanks for your replies. I was actually able to beat Aragon as Castille with the help of your suggestions, and Portugal. I crushed them, and took control of all their lands.

Next question.... It doesn't seem like I can keep any of my newly conquered lands. The peace interface lets me select humiliate, transfer trade power, etc. but any peace treaty I make, the lands revert back to Aragon. Am I missing something? How do I win the game if I don't take over their territory?

You have to select the provinces which you want to take in the peace treaty. You can do that on the first tab of the peace screen or by clicking on them on the map while the peace deal is open. But not all CBs allow the taking of provinces. Most notably the humiliate rival CB doesn't allow anything which would make the defender lose land (but the attacker can lose provinces if he loses the war)

You probably used the "humiliate" cb, which explicitly disqualifies you from taking any provinces. (This is documented in the war declaration text, but there's a lot of text in there so it's very tempting to just not read it.)

Have developers fixed the bugs introduced in Leviathan expansion? I completely stopped following the game updates after the Leviathan disaster, so it would be good to know if it makes sense to return to EU4 again.

I used the humiliate CB, so I guess I'm out of luck for taking over land. More questions have come up, though.....

Is there anywhere I can see all my CBs against people, or do I have to go to the declare war tab on every province?

I can now build castles in 3 provinces. Is there any conventional knowledge as to where these should be built? I'm thinking I don't want to build one because of the maintenance cost.

I have no ability to make a "core". First of all, it seems important, but what is a core, and secondly, how do I gain the ability to acquire some?

At this point, why do I care about disputed successions in far away provinces?

How do I know if my Peasants War is over? I've eliminated all their armies.

How do I increase my stability?

Does a castle provide the same benefits as a fortress as far as hindering the movement of enemy armies?

Why do I care if my nobility estate becomes disloyal? Or the church?

Thanks in advance for your help!

1) in one of the last pages of ledger you have a list of your casus belli

2) mountains and hills specially, and other type of terrain that gives defensivnes or attrition, and try to fill gaps in your borders

3)you can make on provinces you own that doesn't have them spending admin power

4)if you mean the disputed sucesion alert in the top, it's for helping you fish for personal unions, if youre new it's a bit complex at the moment

5)In the stability and expansion tab you also have the disasters in your country where you can see if it is active ,and what to in order to end it if not

6) spend admin power in the stability and expansion tab or wait for events

7)one its an upgraded version of the other, every fort does that except the capital fort in a province without one built

8)they give you unrest and other negative effects

Can't reform religion of Portugal even though he has a province (not a colony) next to me. Is it because my colony isn't finished ?
