I'm one of those rare folk who always uses a CB; losing stability, gaining war exhaustion, and gaining needless AE (even if it's only on a part of the world no one cares about, and no one even cares about the people who care about it, it's still completely unnecessary) just doesn't seem worth it to me.
I'm mostly one of those people, but there are campaigns where I will consider an early-game noCB war.

One of those campaigns is - you might be surprised to hear - the Ottomans, where it can make sense to noCB Granada (and force-vassalize them in the peace deal) early in the campaign.

Interesting strategy, although I'll admit I can't follow your logic on that one. Presumably that draws you into a war against Castile and/or Portugal early on, but what's the benefit of that?

I guess part of it is I just like seeing how I can manage to get the wars I want while still using CBs (especially since sometimes that land is outside fabrication distance).

Is there an interface toggle to get notifications for revolts in your subjects' territory? I know I can see the unrest on the Stability tab if I check the tickbox to see subject revolts, but it's easy to overlook there.

Can someone explain this succession war? Austria got a PU over England so France is attacking - but Austria has tons of odd nations on its side. Austria is allied with Commonwealth but not with Denmark or Castille. France is alone up against 4 Great Powers and England. How did Crimea and Circassia get involved?

Question: Is it worthwhile to build buildings in trade regions such as West Africa, such as marketplace and/or manufacturies? (Apart from the occasional shipyard, that seems obvious)

if you can take control of trade in the region, and steer it home, then yes.

If not, then no.

Is there an interface toggle to get notifications for revolts in your subjects' territory? I know I can see the unrest on the Stability tab if I check the tickbox to see subject revolts, but it's easy to overlook there.

What do you mean by notifications? I don't believe you can get an alert (the banners at the top of the screen) for subject revolts or make their progress appear in the outliner but you should get a pop-up notification when the revolt fires and that can be switched on in your message settings if you are not getting it.

That looks like a feature of the Religious Leagues. If Austria is attacked as Emperor and Leader of the Catholic League then all League Members are called in as allies.

I'm Prussia. France has PU over Sweden and Russia. Any strategies to break the PU?

Use your spy network to sabotage their reputation and use your space marines to kill French troops to tank their prestige. These will boost the liberty desire of their subjects. Once that goes above 50% the subjects will stop helping them in wars and France's rivals are likely to support independence leading to the end of the PUs through war.

How do you decide which provinces in Trade Company regions get turned into Trade companies and which ones are worth making states?

I currently go with "if it's upstream of my trade collection node and doesn't have gold, I make it a trade company"... but I'm not sure if this is actually correct.

  • Castile is in the top five Countries I Like To Screw Over In EU4.
  • If you're going to screw over Castile, screwing it over early on is beneficial.
  • Granada owns one of the provinces required for Unify Islam, and Castile owns another.
  • You don't start the game with coring (or naval supply) range to Iberia, but you can always core a province on your home continent that is adjacent to a subject on your home continent, and coastal waters adjacent to your subjects' provinces count as Home Waters for naval attrition purposes.
  • With The Cossacks, subjects will fabricate claims on adjacent provinces that their overlord has marked as Vital Interest.
  • With Art of War, you can declare war using your subjects' Conquest CBs.

If you're playing a European nation, you'll almost never be making states in trade company regions. Gold is probably the only regular exception. For non-europeans it can vary a bit more based on trade-nodes and the relative values of the provinces.

My ruler is a Tactical Genius and Bold Fighter. Do these bonuses only apply when I roll a land leader, like the bonuses from Offensive Ideas? If so I should roll my generals whilst this ruler is alive lol...

Well it depends especially if you won't be able to get 51% control. As Portugal I made the Bruneian provinces a State to increase my force limit and manpower.
