EUIV Not launching

I was able to start a game earlier immediately after patching and buying the DLC. I played for a bit, closed the game, and when trying to open it later it crashed and gave an error message before the splash screen.

Verifying game cache didn't work, re-installing the game didn't work.

Running Windows 7.

The only fix seems to be: (1) un-subscribing from all the Steam Workshop mods, and (2) deleting the mod files in the User\Documents\Paradox Interactive\EU4 folder.

However, I did not try either just (1) or just (2), so I don't know which one is sufficient, but doing both seems to work.

Did it and reinstalled game afterwards. Still no result.

Having the same issue. Uninstalled and reinstalled, reverted to previous patch then restarted then reinstalled the new patch, etc. I've done everything. Game will load if I revert to 1.11.4/any other previous patch, but won't load under any other circumstance.[/QUOT
I am having same problem and I have Windows 8. My saved games were destroyed by the malicious update, when I asked for help from Paradox they gave me instructions that I followed and now I can not even play AT ALL! What kind of business model is this?

So there are the mods in the EU4\mod folder, and I also had some random mod files in the EU4 folder itself. Idk if you have mods floating around in there, but if that doesn't do it I dunno what else to do. Maybe turn off Steam overlay? Otherwise just wait for a hotfix I guess :/

No, there doesn't seem to be any loose mods around. Completely cleared the documents Paradox folder and the Steam one. Disabling overlay didn't work either, so waiting for the hotfix seems to be it at this point. Thanks anyway!

I bought CS and played for a while without problems. Later I bought Guns, Drums, ..., and the Pre-Order pack, and the launcher wouldn't start anymore. When uninstalling those DLC's, the launcher works again and the game can be started. I did not delete any mods (none of them are activiated though since they haven't been updated yet), and did not reinstall the game or anything. I can reproduce both situations. Maybe this is of help for somebody or for fixing the error...

Same here launcher doesn't even load since new patch. Linux, no mods and launcher fails to load.
No sign of a response from paradox or a hotfix incoming?

Deleted my C:\Users\[Username]\(OneDrive - Ignore this unless you're in Win10)\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV

Seems to be working for the time being.

Or (more realistically) wait for a hot fix from Paradox. This is affecting a large number of users, so I'm assuming they will prioritise fixing this!

Right - I've finally got it working (using the 1.11.4 beta) - The launcher works when I deleted Mods folder (and removed the mod entries from the settings file) from C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV and from the Steamapps folder. I have my EU4 back!

This worked for me.

Was getting nasty errors on Linux. Reverted to 1.11 and was still getting them.

Renamed ~/.paradoxinteractive/Europa Universalis IV/mod to something other than mod. Looks like we are ok now.

I'm having the same issue as most. I was able to play for a few hours at the start of common sense, but now I'm totally unable to launch the game. Steam says preparing to launch and then nothing happens. I've tried the usual launching from exe / purging all mods / totally clean reinstalls / steam settings and overlay tweaking / prayer. Sadly still not able to play. Oh, and I'm on Windows 8.1.

So stoked for this patch despite the already vast amount of time EU4 has taken from me, but totally unable to play. Paradox please help before withdrawal hits.

This and nothing else. Its an NVidia file. Faffing with drivers hasn't worked either. The hype to play is real, but I guess I'm also waiting for the hotfix

For anyone still seeing this thread, do this:

Please do a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere (this is important!)
- "delete local content" in Steam-EU4
- in the Steam Workshop, un-subscribe from ALL mods
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/SteamApps/common/EU4 AND Documents/Paradox/EU4
- go to the Windows Update site and allow it to apply all patches it wants to - especially .NET updates (this is important!)
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

IF the game starts OK then, move save games (from 1.12.x games ONLY) back into the save folder and test again.
IF still OK, then re-subscribe to mods - but ONLY those that have been updated to be compatibly with 1.12.x
