Yes, Ming is much weaker now. I can't westernize in 1510s and beat the Russians in 1540s. But it is far from unplayable. If you want you can still take all of asia before 1821 using Ming.

yeah a complete vanilla autonomy overhaul. It'll be a lot of work but worth it.
If they are compressed, try unpacking and running that save instead.
I think 1.8 is one of the best things that happened to EU4.
After the beta patch it runs just as smooth as pre-1.8 and all these changes are really good.
Minor things aswell, like showing fabrication process next to your diplomat instead of the relations when fabricating a claim.

I personally have Alieware M18X (you probably know this beast) so obviously I have the smoothest game possible.
As for the DLC - it is one the best things I have ever played. Currently in my top 5, although there are some bugs currently.

Yea of course there are some bugs in a massively complicated game like EU4 but I have to say I like the route they are taking. I'd like them to do more with the terrain system than just putting 1 terrain type per province but this hardly is game breaking. Had a lot of fun in my last game!
My performance was junk until the beta patch (I have AMD FX 8320, Radeon 7870, 8 GB RAM). Beta patch made it as fast as 1.7 and before, give or take. If there's a difference, I can't see it.
But take the speed complaints in mind; those who aren't on the beta patch might just be encountering that bug, not an actual performance based on hardware.
Just open them with WinRAR or any other file compression tool (7zip, winzip) and extract the actual save file. This only seems to affect compressed files.
