Sorry I disagree with you but the TOTAL WAR engine beats the PARADOX engine hands down, for "tutorial" "informative manual" "user interface", "historical accuracy", "strategy", "gameplay", "combat system unmatched". The combat system in all Paradox games are laughable. HOI being the most laughable game of them all when one can take a minor like Brazil and rule the world! lol When I'm going to put that many "hours" into a game and lets face it all these Paradox games take hours, days, even weeks to play, I want to have FUN and ENJOY the trip. I had Victoria for 6 days, and the trip was far from enjoyable out of the box. Rating 6.7, I think the professional reviewer average is right-on on this one. ;) I wouldn't expect anything less than 10's from fan(atics). ;)

Hmmm, I disagree with a number of your points (strategy, gameplay), while I agree with some (tutorial for one).

But with one point, you went so far off screen that my monitor nearly tipped over. Total War beating Paradox hands down when it comes to historical accuracy!!!

That's got to be the funniest thing I've heard this year. Please, do elaborate.

My 2 ducats/pounds -

If one of the main things you enjoyed about EU2 was being able to play hundreds of different nations, and you can only get one game, get EU2 back. There are only a few dozen nations in Victoria you can really do anything with, and most of them are in Europe - and that won't change even after a dozen patches. If that bothers you, you'll be disappointed in Victoria. The lack of variety is starting to bother me already.

But hey, I feel the same way about HOI, and you enjoy that one, so maybe you won't mind...

*Lol* How can a few dozen playable nations in a game be percieved as lack of variety?! Seriously...you must have more time on your hands than anyone I have ever come across. :)

Maybe it's because I literally never play any game but whatever Paradox' latest release is. I have to get all my variety from that one game. :)

You're comparing apples and oranges man, Total War is fun but in the end its a glorified risk with little minigames everytime you move around. Seemed great until I had to fight the same battle in the same province every other turn. Wee. I mean if your idea of strategy is 'move these guys over there so they don't move over here' and your idea of gameplay is 'fancy map with little dudes who run around' then hey score for you. I don't exactly see what about their engine you find superior, what it's 3d.. is that it? Better UI? Man it's just a bunch of little guys moving around you don't NEED a UI in M:TW there isn't anything to do with it.. you just drag your little guys where they need to go. Don't know why you're wasting your time comparing the combat system, there are enough micro rts combat games on the market and I for one am and glad to get away from it.

When it comes right down to it? They only released ONE patch for M:TW.. ONE. Oh they have a second patch, you just have to buy it. It doesn't exactly run smooth as silk.. they didn't finish, they just quit.

But what does this have to do with anything? Do you see anybody here wasting their time going to TW's ezboard and blabbering about how superior Vicky is? No didn't think so :D

Oh wait I get it.. the historical accuracy thing was supposed to be a secret hint that this was all a troll and I should go back to fixing dinner right? My apologies...

As a owner of both total war and Vicky I say vicky spanks total war all the way to china.

*everyone are chocked to see a player that don't mind a bit of unhistorical things, ohhh the horror*

Vicky is a most playable and FUN game to play, and in my book "FUN" is more important than, "ohh noooo 20 turks in hawaii!" This game is sooooo broken and buggy!.
And the army sizes are correct compared to the population, and "what if" a mad man created viagra a bit sooner, huh? :D

The total war engine is good for tactical combat but it is really bad for the strategy part. Heck you can't even play a multiplayer campain, you are limited to tactical battle !

As for Vicky VS EU2, I like EU2 better. Vicky has too much micro management an is too short compare to EU2.

EU2 = masterpiece
Vicky = good game

EU2. Victoria as of 1.01 is not very playable esp. in multiplayer - of course this might change soon (hopefully with 1.02).

Also, Victoria has a lot more micromanagement - in EU2 you can concentrate on grand strategy, maintaining balance of power etc, instead of spending your time clicking on clerks and craftsmen.

The answer is clear, Victoria is buggy and in need of several patches just like the rest. So wait a year and get both in the bargain bin section for $7.99 ea. ;) I got EUII for $7.99 recently patched and working nicely. Why pay $50 for a busted game that will only be patched over time and time again to finally make it balanced and playable. ;) If you've waited this long without getting EUII, you can wait a little longer and save yourself about $40 and one can do a lot with $40.

Raginhood, I promise to be more polite this time,

but for the second time you are saying Victoria is a buggy game. You played the game for 7 days and then returned it and you conclusion was it was too buggy and didn't deserve the 50$,

I've played Mexico, Belgium and Krakow troughout the whole game and I've got 1 CTD,

I've noticed some bugs and reported them, but it didn't stop me from playing,

It are people who actually pay for the game and help to solve the "bugs" to get this game even greater, and bring money in Johan & Co's bank account to afford his doctor when he has to get better when he's worked that hard for us in cold winter,

Again, Victoria is fun to play, is much less buggy then EU2 and HOI,

Still I've got the feeling you are waging a guerrillia war on Victoria, no hard feelings tough. 50 $ is much money for some people,

Victoria simply isn't a product for the big masses (so it doesn't have the big masses budget), if you know what I mean...

Let's say I look more to the potential this game has, less to the issues to be solved,

making a game with more degrees of freedom is a great mission objective,

releasing it and publishing it, is an even greater mission,

patching it and further improving it, is the cherry on the cake,

EUII. It's great! And I read somewhere in EUII forum that EUIII won't be out till 2007. :( Victoria has a long time to wait to become what EUII is now after all the patches...

It depends on which time period you like better, 1419-1820 or 1836-1920. Victoria has a much better tech model and industry model (befitting the period) so you'll have a lot to do during peace time. EUII gets boring if you don't have a lot of wars or build a colonial empire.

If you do get EUII definitely get Crown of the North - it has Crown of the North plus EUII v1.07 for the same price as EUII v1.00 by itself. EUII has a lot of problems before atleast version 1.05, so getting 1.07 on the CD is great.

Now if only they'd do a EUII, Victoria, HOI bundle.... :)

Here's the thing: being a veteran HOI player (and loving it! :D ) I started to think about the good old EUII days...and I decided to check amazon to see If I could rebuy it (my original EUII copy had a very sad fate...but it's a long story).

Anyway, before I placed my order for EUII (and Imperialism 2 - another lost classic :D) I started thinking to myself "sertorio my old man, why not go for the strike, and buy Victoria instead of EUII?". I mean, both games have roughly the same scope (empire building, diplomacy, blah blah blah), so why not go for victoria instead of wasting my money on an oldy, even if that oldy is the amazing EUII [bows respectfully]?

So, what do you guys who played both of them think? EUII or Victoria?

Thanks everybody, for the help. :)

For what it's worth, and after carefull consideration of all your posts, I've decided to go for EUII right now, and only buy Victoria later.

According to what I've read, there are still some major issues that need to be taken care of in Victoria (the economy problem seems the most troublesome) before the game can really live up to the potencial it undoubtfully has.

On the other hand EUII seems to be exactly what I seek: a challenging and balanced game, with a huge replay value...just like HOI! :D

Thanks for the input guys! Off I go to amazon.co.uk to take care of the order. :D

It's your call, I waited with HoI and I'm regretting it, o now I play victoria that is very bugg free In my own opinion, that is.

It's not the eventual bugs that are making me swing towards EUII. It's not even a matter of price (no, I'm not waiting for Vicky to hit the bargain bins).

It's a matter of gameplay balance and polish. I feel that although Victoria has great potencial, it probably needs two or three more patches before it's ok for me to buy it. The economy thing really annoys me, so i guess as soon as that's fixed, I'll get victoria ASAP.

I waited a bit on HOI too and I haven't regreted it at all. It allowed me to go through the HOI 1.00 nightmare unharmed. Now HOI is the only game I play, for months. :D

I played EU I thru every patch AND the IGC, and EU II thru every patch and now Vicky - I think (despite the known issues) I prefer Vicky. I feel more personally invovled in the development of my country. I just miss the events - there are no where near enough events for my taste. BUt hopefully that will all be taken care of in the VIP.

I never thought I would love agame more than EU II <SIGH>

I have both EU2 and Total War... and I am thinking hard about Victoria (likely to wait fo feedback on 1.02 /1.03 before getting it).

TW campaigns are a joke from a strategic standpoint and a simulation standpoint.
Replayability of campaign is minimal in TW.

BUT... the tactical battle engine is really fun to play with. I end playing MP tactical battle only, and those are tactically challenging!

My personal game dream is EU2 campaign + TW battles.

If money is not an issue, why not just buy the game now to support the continual release of Paradox patches, and shelve it?
Anyways, 1.02 is out...
