Stellaris went to 2.0 with the Apocalypse Expansion
Hearts of Iron is soon to release 1.10, only the 10th major patch of that game.

But then we have EU4.

There have been plenty of Massive updates that changed things forever. But we never got a 2.0 or even a 3.0.

And its not like we can't do it.

Imagine this, Eu4 Emperor is now considered 3.0, one patch after the 64-bit update, massive changes, overhauls of many basic features etc.
It clearly is a Major Patch inline with CK2's Holy Fury and it's 3.0.

So let's argue it becomes 3.0

It actually wouldn't be very confusing. 3.0 or 1.30, you still have 3 and 0 together. Continuing from there the next patch would be 3.1 or in the old system 1.31. It would actually kinda work perfectly. Just that we never had a 2.0 Update in Eu4.

So yeah, sadly it never happened (Paradox, you sure you don't wanna do it :p :p). So it's something to just ponder and speculate about. But I ask ppl this, I think many would consider either 1.29 or 1.30 to definitely a very big update and change. What would 2.0 be though if this was considered a 3.0?

Would it be patch 1.12 with Common Sense or 1.18 with Rights of Man? Or would it be a different patch. What significally changed eu4 to warrant a 2.0 If we assume Emperor and 1.30 is 3.0?

2.x versions would not necessarily imply massive gameplay changes but moreso massive code changes. If they for example update the engine version used to a clausewitz+jomini engine numbering the version 2.xx makes sense.

Version numbering has sadly become a stylistic choice for developers in the past years but historically you would never change the first number unless it was a rebuild and not a new iteration. It used to be Version.Patch.Build

Yeah but it's still a pretty major patch...just like the 29 that came before it :)
By that logic, the latest patch should be version 30.4 :)

Do keep in mind that 1.29 (original emperor patch, but then just the Manchu patch) did upgrade the game to 64bit.

It was a solid reason to upgrade to a new version number.

I picked 1.30 though as it was the expansion first released with the new 64bit code

I did hear about it previously, and it is an interesting comment.

But i also like to just discuss fun nerdy stuff like this.

And the comment was made a long time ago.

I was about to mention that Johan was the one preventing it becoming 2.0 in the past, but seems somebdy already mentiond that.
Given that Johan still is involved with the game, I'd presume that he's still the one deciding not to roll to 2.0.

I really really dislike "2.0" or "3.0"..

Thats sequels for me.

you sure?

not a rebrand

EU4 Now 200% Better,

You will now be able to survive 200% longer with Byzantium and have 50% more provinces starting out as them.

Eu4 3.0 download now!!

Honestly would be a funny april fools.

I think it only made sense in Stellaris, 2.0 version is very, very different from 1.0, and I don't mean more content but core mechanics. Other titles also changed them but not to the same degree imo.

My experience from software development is that the logic for versioning of a product is a political issue decided by who has the most informal power within the dev team so they can force their interpretation of when to increment the numbers through.
