When I try to save in EU4, the game does nothing, I click the button to save, then go to load game and my save isn't there. I was wondering if anyone had any solutions since i couldn't find any online. Also, this is not in ironman mode because I was testing if it could save, and autosaves aren't working either.

Edit: It is fixed now

For EVERYONE with 32bit Windows:

Try rolling back to 1.7.3 in the Steam beta tab; if that helps then do this Workaround:

1: Open Command Prompt (it's in Accessories in Vista)

2: Set it to be in Admin mode http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947813(v=ws.10).aspx

3: Paste this in: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2560

4: Restart

5: If you ever need to undo: BCDEdit /deletevalue increaseuserva

For XP only: http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27...ry-errors-allow-applications-use-2gb-ram.html

Note this will NOT help if you have 2gb or less of system memory, only loading fewer DLCs will do that, or rolling back to 1.7.3 .

And please start planning your move to 64bit Windows! Most Windows licenses allow you access to that for free, there's just the procedure of doing a reinstall that's a pain.

Rolling back to 1.7.3 works for me, setting the increaseuserva value to 2560 doesn't. It's frustrating that I have to consider changing to a 64-bit OS just because of a single game's patch/DLC, but there you go. 1.8/AoW requires 64-bit to run properly now, apparently.

I'm not so sure that it's not a ram issue. I had 32 bit with around 3.5 gb of ram available and had couldn't do ironman, couldn't save, etc. Thing was, I had 8gb in sticks. Apparently when I made that computer I forgot that 32 bit Windows 7 system only addresses 4gb of ram. I took a spare hard drive, did 64 bit Windows 7, now it recognizes all 8gb of ram and EU4 is fine. I think the 1.8 patch requires 4gb of ram, if not more. Point being, I think it may not be that it requires 64 bit per se, but that 32 bit can't handle enough ram to run it.

Fantastic. New requirements which are not specified in the System Requirements, for an expansion/patch I paid for (as every previous one), and now I have to make another investment on my PC to play the game without getting screwed by lost savegames (just lost 2 5+ hours games in 2 days). Just brilliant.

It's not the paid expansion causing this, it's the free patch.

And we can almost always adjust your Windows memory allocation to work around the problem, if you're willing to work with us. If you have 32bit Windows and 3gb or more of installed memory, those steps in post #4 above really should help.

Point being, I think it may not be that it requires 64 bit per se, but that 32 bit can't handle enough ram to run it.
That's what I mean by the game now requiring 64-bit OS to run properly. Apparently, the way 32-bit Windows is set up, it reserves a set amount of RAM for the system and the rest is available for applications. Combined with the upper limit of how much RAM a 32-bit OS can support, this effectively means 64-bit is required to run EU4 without changing Windows settings or anything like that. The game now simply requires more memory than is available to it by default. I'm not convinced that it's necessary for it to do so, particularly when there was no warning that I remember reading before the patch that 32-bit operating systems would have trouble getting the game to work properly.

It's not the paid expansion causing this, it's the free patch.

And we can almost always adjust your Windows memory allocation to work around the problem, if you're willing to work with us. If you have 32bit Windows and 3gb or more of installed memory, those steps in post #4 above really should help.
I have 32-bit Win7 and 4GB RAM installed. The 2560 value did not work, though switching to 1.7.3 did. Do you have any suggestions that might allow me to play 1.8 outside of multiplayer until I'm comfortable making the switch to 64-bit Windows?

I put 2056 as my userva number, it works fine for me now.

On Windows XP, some drivers, especially video adapter drivers with onboard RAM, cannot run with the /3GB parameter because they require more address space than the 1 GB kernel address space permits.
So, as I unerstood, Art of war is imposible to play on windows xp. I have thinkpad with I5 and 4GB ram and I was playing standard eu4 without dlc.Now I bought AoW and it is end for me... :-(

What did you do exactly? The steps up in post #4 do work, and no-one else has yet reports back that they've suddenly stopped working.

Once again: the problem is NOT AoW, it is 1.8.
It is not impossible to play on XP, as long as you have 3gb or more of memory installed.

Select "My Computer" with a right-click and choose "Properties"
Click the Advanced tab.
Switch to the "Startup and Recovery" area and press "Settings"
In the System startup section, click Edit.
It should automatically start Notepad displaying the Windows boot.ini
In the "Operating Systems" section, add /3GB /Userva=2560 to the end of the line that includes /fastdetect
Don't forget to save the changes and close Notepad and all open dialog boxes.
To let the changes take effect restart your computer

As to say the same thing i put in the ticket you respond the other day I urge paradox to update the page http://www.europauniversalis4.com/support where it says that the min sys req is still 2gb of ram. This obiusly if the dev dont plan to fix the issue and made the game work using win 32 bits.

  • Europa Universalis IV
Neither 2560 or 2056 is working to allow for saving within the game as far as I can tell. I might as well just give up on playing EU4 unless I plan on playing for a couple days straight just to finish a game. Disappointing.
Please opt into the 1.8.1 beta now available in teh Steam EU4 beta tab, it should resolve this issue.

New patch to the beta hotfix patch seems to have finally fixed it for me. I'm also running the bcdedit thing. I'll mess around later to see if that bit's still necessary and to see if it stays stable save-wise for longer than a couple years.

Thanks.
