EU4 - Runtime Erro (Steam)

*(This is only for Technical people out there that has methods towards helping players such as me with this problem i have been having.)*

Dear Tech.
Since i have updated my EU4 game at oct 29 duo to the art of war pack.. i have not been able to run my game duo to an error called Runtime.




as you can see in the images you can see my problem.....I would appreciated if somebody can help me out with this problem.

Solutions that i have done and do not work.
- re installed the game , delete the folder of EU4
- Run as Administrator for steam and eu4

Method that i have done i have been able to play the game..... but i am not able to save my history (Period time.)
- i went to the directory C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Europa Universalis IV and i was able to keep the game going by First running the eu4_server.exe file . after that i would run the eu4.exe file... one it was set and ready then the error would not happen...... but as i played by country i was not able to save. so for those of you our there that was to play the game with a unsaved function do this method intell somebody can fix my runtime problem.

So as i have said can somebody out there that can please help me run my game normally the way how it was before i had this error.

If you roll back to 1.7.3 (Steam-eu4-properties-beta tab) does it work? If so this is probably a 32bit Windows issue.

If you really have 6gb of memory, nearly half of that will be wasted under 32bit Windows - you need to switch to 64bit to get access to all 6gb.

ok Thank you it looks like that i am able to play the know because i have rolled it back.yes i do only have 3gb able to use but i do not think it is the problem.With by any chance Although is there any way that i am able to play the latest version of Eu4 , i would be really interested towards doing so do to the fact that i enjoy how they adjusted it. and if not then how would i be able to update towards the game if am not able to play the latest version.

As I said, you need to switch to 64bit Windows to get access to all the memory you have installed.

In the meantime try this Workaround:

1: Open Command Prompt (it's in Accessories in Vista)

2: Set it to be in Admin mode http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947813(v=ws.10).aspx

3: Paste this in: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2560

4: Restart


5: If you ever need to undo: BCDEdit /deletevalue increaseuserva

Hello there, I have the same issue with my 32 bit OS. So if this doesn't work (doesn't seem to be a memory problem anyway), does it means I can't play the game any further than 1.7.3 ?
That would make me kind of sad as the required PC configuration don't mention anything about having a 64bit OS or >3gb Ram

+1. The recommended specs is 2 gb of ram, and 32 bit allows 4 gb of ram, right?... Kind of sucks to have bought a product that doesnt even allow me to play it even though i am meeting the recommended specs.

32bit Windows theoretically allows use of 4gb of memory, but in reality 0.5-1gb of that is reserved by the system for its own use. Then some of that is usually taken away by the video card, so commonly there is really only ~2gb left for the game and Windows to share.

In addition, it restricts any app to only 2gb all up, regardless of how much is free. What we are doing up there is moving that limit to 2.5gb.

In any case opt into the new 1.8.1 beta, as that should help this issue.

I have the exact same problem.
Is running windows 7 64bit, and I get a runtime error each time I try to run the game.

Is running everything as Admin, and have moved the steamlibary out of the "Program files(86)" just to make sure it wasn't that that did the problem.
I have tried the fix AndrewT wrote here, and it didn't help either.

I have tried to run the game without any dlc and it don't matter. Still got the runtime error..

And isn't using any mods of any kind.


Note: The error come when Loading Flags..

Add2: Installed the 1.8.1 beta patch and it fixed the problem, what ever it was.

Through using the 1.8.1, it worked well for me so thank you for that, hoping that it'll still work on it's proper release
