Eu4 papal state and Italy help plz

I have the papal state in Rome as a loyal vassal but I have a diplo rep debuff of -2 PERMANENTLY. But I’ve only vassalised and not annexed them because I don’t have Florence, I lost a war to Spain, who also has Naples in a 0.0 revolt risk PU. This is the war to retake Florence below:

Is there any way to just live with this? The -2 to DR is rather bad, but apparently the annexation debuff is worse

If you want to just live with it, then just living with it is how you just live with it.

Only catholic nations get the debuff for either holding Rome or having the Papal states as a vassal. You can get rid of it by changing religion or by forming either Italy or the Roman Empire. When playing a Italian nation its best to leave the the province of Roma until last if you want to remain as catholic. Just keep buying indulgences so you don't get excommunicated when you expand in Italy as this will anger the pope.

Can you ally France and maybe Ottomans? Can you ask Commonwealth to break alliance with Spain? Most of the enemy troops will be from the colonies and will either not be sent over to fight in Europe or will arrive in small stacks.

You could always annex them then release them. Catholic nations get an event to return Rome to the Pope - I'd recommend at least considering that (I don't remember the penalties for breaking vassalization but IIRC stab is involved, and I usually prioritize ADM over DIP so the annexation cost is preferable), and if it's right for you, do it then save Rome for the last leg of your conquest. Consider it a valuable lesson in Italian conquests.

As for the Spain issue, always try and kiss up to France and Austria when you're in Italy. France will almost always be eager to help slap the Spanish around, and Austria - unless allied - will at least serve as a deterrent against invasion. They're less likely to help though, due to Distant War. Obviously, losing the -2 Dip Rep will help securing both of them.

I would try it. Occupy Naples and the spanish land in italy and hide behind your Mountain fort. Commonwealth paper troop will be easily dispached that way and you could prop White peace after 5 years. Same will Portugal that will attrition themself to death transporting troop. Try to build a few heavies to hold the strait to get in sicily. Should be able to rush the island early days of the war before spain can regroup its navy. Save game before and do better the second time if need be.

If you own Leviathan, I would try to ally Spain, keep a diplomat forever currying favors with Spain, and one by one (starting with Florence) I would ask your cores for favors.

Yeah the fun thing is that I have now formed Italy after getting enough favours to get Florence, but in the time between me annexing the OPM papal state and getting Florence back to form Italy, the pope is now vibing in Beyreuth, and has been the pope for ages, it always second in terms of chance petcentage but I’ve used papal sanctuary to get the influence from churches and cathedrals and literally every province in my Italy has a cathedral, so I just need to keep hoping it’ll eventually be me lol
