EU4 Mac Crashes

Hey everybody, I have had EU4 for about two weeks now and it has played fine but for some reason when I start it now it crashes at the first screen when it sais loading databases. I don't know what to do and really wanna keep playing so any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. I dont have the lag issues other mac players have and EU4 has run smoothly in every way up until this.

Run a Steam verify. If that doesn't help try deleting the Documents EU4 directory, and let the game recreate it with default settings (obviously move any valued save games elsewhere first).

Thank you for the advice but neither option worked. I dont know how to possibly fix this..

OK, Try a full clean reinstall: move any valued save games elsewhere and uninstall the game from within Steam. Then manually delete ALL the Eu4 directories from under BOTH the Steam and MyDocuments folders. Now reinstall the game from Steam, and run the Verify just to make sure it all came down properly.

Have you just applied OS X 10.8.5 perhaps? If so did this only happen after that?

I can reproduce the bug. It seems that copying gamefiles from the steam/common folder to elsewhere creates this bug and is only reversable by running a full clean reinstall. While the files are not altered, after deleting the local files via steam all the folders that i looked into (usually common and history and their subfolders) are not deleted, which seems to keep the bug appearing until you delete them manually and run a fresh install. sorry if this is hard to understand, i tried my best to explain, still my english is not very good. if you need screenshots or error-protokols i could provide both

It's not a bug, since reinstalling fixed it in the OP's case. We have no information that he moved or copied files, which I think you believe caused a problem for you.

We do know that doing the Steam 'delete local files' does not delete the stuff under the Documents folder; that stuff is not installed by Steam but is created when the game first runs, so there's no reason to expect Steam to delete it. And that's a good thing, otherwise you'd lose all your save games.

Note that if you copy the EU4 code files from Steam to elsewhere, that copy of the game will still use the same settings and cache from the Documents EU4 folder. You should use the userdir.txt trick to set up a separate folder for that copy - see the sticky FILE LOCATIONS thread above for details on that.

Although everything you said is right, it won't fix my problem. i can start a new thread, but i thought i'd save space and reply to this one (it's called Mac Crashes after all).

I've recently started modding and because I had no interests in changing the checksum(bc Ironman) I copied some country- and historyfiles from the root-folder to a custom folder(let's call it mod and it is on the desktop). From this moment on, and this is reproducable, the game crashes at startup.

This Problem is now only solvable by deleting local files via steam, then manually deleting the /steam/common/Europa Universalis IV/ Folder, which is just filled with a couple of empty Folders and deleting manually the /documents/.../Europa Universalis IV Folder, which is intendet as you have written. After that i have to reinstall via Steam and the game works until the next time i have to look up some data in the steam/common/... folder.

Just because two people on Macs have crashes doesn't mean their problem causes are at all related ... and starting a new thread does not use any more server space that an extra post on an old one.

Did you try the userdir.txt thing I mentioned?

tried, with no change. as soon as i copy or even open a file in the steamfolder, the game keeps crashing

I found a workaround. If you want to use a file from the gamefolder, cut it out and paste it elsewhere (f.e. if you want to modify it). then use the steam verify, steam will download the missing file and the game should work normally afterwards.

You might try running a permissions repair on your hard disk, sounds like there's a problem there for you.
