If these stats are still counting a game as a game start, then each crash is its own game :p Paradox can manipulate the amount multiplayers crash to change their statistics to suit them! It's genius!

Well i thought i remember seeing somewhere that the reason 1.13 hasn't been released was due to them fixing MP. Specifically the OOS issues.

but yea, it has been a problem for too long, at least it is hopefully fixed once and for all.

There was no value judgement in my post, just an interesting difference between CK2 (where total conversion/gameplay mods absolutely dominate) and EU4.

Will there be a similar update for CK2 soon (or have I just been dense and missed it)?

For gameplay overhaul mods, CK2 has always had more because mods do a lot of really obvious and useful stuff that the devs just ignore for whatever reason.

The most obvious example I can think of is that all the way back in the early versions of CK2+ Wiz had smarter crusade resolution handling, while in vanilla the game to this day does it the same way it did back then.

Cheers for the stats, always interesting :). MP seemed a little lower than I'd expected, I had in my head 20 per cent or so, but that might be a figure from CK2 instead and I'm just getting my memories jumbled, or does it bounce around from month-to-month? Cheers for highlighting the popular mods as well.

re: Why CK2 has more and more popular overhaul mods

What are you basing the 'larger modding community' on, exactly?

I think he's right to say that CK2 has a larger modding community. Which isn't quite the same thing as saying that there are more people modding CK2 and EUIV (I have no idea whether that's the case, and I don't think it matters). I think this can be at least partially attributed to Steam Workshop.

CK2 was released without Workshop support, and continued without it for a long time. The best way to get mods was to go to the modding subforum here. The best way to get your own mods out there was to post them on that same subforum. This created a big community of modders and mod users that encouraged collaboration and discussion. This was (and to some extent remains) an ideal place for large overhaul projects to develop, and so we got amazing mods like Elder Kings and Game of Thrones which would not have been possible without the community that fostered them. CK2 now has Workshop support, but the community that grew on the forums stuck around, and the mods that it created continue to thrive.

EUIV by contrast was released with Workshop support. The easiest way to get mods, and the most visible place to display mods, is the Workshop. The Workshop does not foster any sense of community among modders or players. Individual modders upload and update their work, and players might occasionally leave a comment. That's not a community. Our modding subforum isn't and never has been particularly active and the community is very small. Only a few big collaborative projects exist, and new ones almost never spring up. And yet the game has a huge playerbase of which nearly a third use mods. This suggests to me that the reason for the lack of big projects is the lack of collaboration among modders and the lack of a popular hub for discussion rather than a lack of modders, interested players, or interesting ideas.

In my personal case, this is not a good proxy. When I play ironman, I play online, when I don't (basically whenever I don't feel like trying for an achievement), I stay offline. So perhaps half of my games are offline and not ironman, but all of my games would appear to be ironman if you can only check online games.

Anyway, this is not meant to be a criticism of the statistics. I'm inclined to believe they are fairly good, actually.


I agree with your anecdote. I don't actually play ironman, but my one friend actually only logs into Steam for ironman. The rest of the time he plays offline.

I also remember your Holy Roman Empire Squared AAR, wish we could do that in EU4.

I seem to be missing something here because I am no longer sure what people mean by playing online/offline. I took it to mean being connected to the internet so pretty much always for the context of people in here and especially more for those who keep game updated yet that doesn't sound like what you guys are talking about so can anyone enlighten me please?
"offline" in this case normally means Steam client is in "offline mode" or not running at all so it isn't sending info to Steam's servers.

Regarding the lack of mods:
It could be that the game's rules change frequently enough to make it difficult to sustain and balance an overhaul mod. CK2, by contrast, doesn't change the rules that often, but usually extends the rules. That said, from the very beginning EU4 didn't have a great modding scene. Perhaps it's because the game works, and is improved regularly. Also, perhaps EU3 mods cast a bit of a long shadow, while with CK2 people could start "fresh".


Anyway, one thing I think the stats do show is that Paradox should add support for the Russian Language. If 5% of users (or is that 5% of mods?) are adding Russian language, imagine how many new users there are out there unwilling to mod the Russian language in?

Certainly for HoI4 they should add Russian language support.

What is the average play time, and average dates where campaigns "stop"? As in played up to that year and never touched the save again. Maybe that could help locate and boost a time frame where interest fades causing players to start a new game all over. Maybe group the stop dates every 50 years? 1444-1450, 1450-1500, 1550-1600, etc..

I wonder, do developers play eu4 with mods? I know they do play game of thrones mod in CK2 and stuff but what about eu4?

There was no value judgement in my post, just an interesting difference between CK2 (where total conversion/gameplay mods absolutely dominate) and EU4.
Do you mean they dominate language and graphical mods or are they played more than vanilla game?
