New Beginnings

Great was the anticipation as the world woke from its slumber in 1444 AD. In the great city of Toledo on the Iberian Peninsula, king Juan II ruled the Castillian kingdom with a just hand. The king did not care much for the rule of his country however as his main interest at this time was to impress his beautiful young Portuguese wife, queen Rafaela, daughter to the wise king of Portugal. Their marriage had consolidated the Iberian alliance and the pope himself had blessed the union of these two great houses.

The relations with both the northern state of Navarre and the neighbor to the east Aragon were very good. Navarre petitioned to join the Iberian alliance and the kings diplomats assured him that Aragon would soon do the same. The only worry was the heretics in the south assured his advisers, however the army had the Muslim region of Granada under strong guard so the king felt content that the problem could be handled when the time was right. He was much more interested in the legendary beauty of his queen than the fate of some misguided peasants in the south.

It was no surprise then that he dismissed the messenger from the north without much thought when word came from the prince of Navarre about a foreign invasion. Of course some part of the army could be sent north to handle the small southern baronies of France if they deemed it appropriate to attack his alliance.

His closest men advised caution but unfortunately he was to busy eating and drinking to care for their negative attitudes. The first chock came when the unprepared army on it's way north was ambushed by an Argonian army outside Madrid. It seemed somehow along the way the heraldic shields of Aragon and Naples had been mistaken for Armagnac and Provence which led the king to his erroneous entry in the war. The army, as surprised of this betrayal as the king, suffered a crushing defeat and was completely annihilated, which left the kingdom almost unprotected to the eastern invaders. The king was sent westwards with the court while Ramòn Cortès, a young captain of the kings personal cavalry, rode north to try to gather a new army. In the south the remaining army stationed outside Granada was encircled and defeated by a coalition of Napolitian cavalry arriving from the sea and Argonian infantry under the banner of the Catalan king himself.
As the young captain reached the basque regions he got word of the fall of Navarre, no help could be expected from there. Some days later word came by the sea of the defeat of the southern army , and he realized how bad the situation really was. Time was of the essence, unless the Catalonians realize that his one thousand horsemen were what stood between them and the crown of Castille.

He procured loans from the rich merchant families of the north-west and started hiring all mercenaries he could come by. Moving east he fell into Navarre and defeated a small army left behind and then angled south to try to cut off the enemies supply chain. The Catalan king probably felt more exposed than he was and sent a peace envoy with his demands. The peace was signed quickly thereafter yielding Navarre to Aragon and a minor war compensation for the victors. A war that could have ended far worse for Castille.

On his return to the capital the king rewarded Cortès with land and promoted him to general, for his services to the country. The next couple of years were focused on rebuilding the economy and repaying the loans from the war. The truce also gave time to start building up a new army. The heretics in the south chose this time to strike, when the army was still not rebuilt and the economy not fully recovered, and had it not been for the help from the Portuguese or the heroic actions of general Cortès and his recruits they might very well have succeeded. Their initial success was however halted and after the city of Granada itself fell to Cortès and his Portuguese allies the Muslim state could be crushed for good.

Next followed a very calm episode of Juan II rule. The army and navy was rebuilt and the economy flourished. In the rest of Europe times were not so peaceful though, in the north the unholy northern alliance had crushed it's enemies and they went so far as to send ships south to the Iberian peninsula itself, landing small armies in northern Portugal. King Juan the mediocre, as he would later be referred to, sent his reformed grand army west to frighten off the heathens from the far north, and to get his queen, whom was not quite as young and beautiful anymore, off his back. The campaign was not much more than a parade as the Portuguese king handled the invaders without effort, letting the Castillian army return home without loosing a single soldier, in itself a boost for the morale which soon might be needed.

AAR - Portugal

AAR 1 Portugal: Oceans, blood and expansion.
The year of our lord 1444

The young King Afonso V de Avis, ruler of the Portuguese Kingdom already at the age of 12.

In dispute with his closest advisors he had let the word in the land spread that the crown sought adventurers to the court.
The King put his trusted Uncle Henry, Duke of Viseu in charge of reviewing the adventurers.
The conclusion was to present three of them to his majesty himself.

The King explained what his advisors called "a sure way to drain the crowns wealth".
He wanted to explore the oceans, surely there would be more islands then just the azores or madeira that was already under portuguese control.

Of the three, the king decided to put his trust in only one. Namely Nuno Tristão.
Nuno Tristão was given the title of "Explorer of the crown" and the Magalhães Correia, the biggest ship in the Portuguese navy.

Meanwhile the royal council had recieved a messenger from the Kingdom of Castille
Apparently King Juan II of Castille wished for an iberian alliance. However the alliance had one condition. King Juan II wanted to have the young princess Rafaela's hand in marriage.
Why he wanted to marry his newlyborn daughter was beyond any reason but
after threat of beeing excommunicated by the holy father, the Pope he saw no other way then to reluctantly accept the offer.

Nuno Tristão returned around 1445 with news of aggressive natives all along the african west coast, but petitioned for a colony and a naval base to be founded on an island group to the south, just off the african coast. He named the Island Cap Verde.
King Afonso accepted and sent colonist but urged Nuno to increase his efforts in finding new lands.
Pushing himself and his ship harder Nuno found new lands to the west of the new colony, and this seemed like the natives was far less hostile and the continent huge, he spent months exploring the coasts further west.

Around the mid 1447 Nuno returned with glorious news, A real pagan nation had been found, known as the "Maya"
Still afraid of the holy father and his holy powers King Afonso quickly decided to send missionaries to convert these pagans and show his Pious way's to the world.
Sadly the missionaries was murdered brutally by the savages.
Furiously King Afonso declared war and sent 6000 men of the Portuguese army under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque, the earl of xxxxxxxx.
The General began to explore the pagan kingdom while Nuno sailed the transport fleet back to retrieve reinforcements of another 6000 soldiers.
The savages were clearly not blessed by god and lost quickly when they ran out of places to hide.
The province of Campeche was claimed as a base in these new lands while the rest of the pagan kingdom of the Mayans was proclaimed a Portuguese vassal.

Back on the Iberian peninsula Juan II of Castille found himself in trouble.
There had been a war over the small state of Navarre with the Aragonese.
With the army away in foreign new lands King Afonso dared not intervene in the war that went badly for Afonso's friendly neighbour, with most of their army annihilated. Peace was settled with Navarre becoming part of the Aragonese kingdom.

Another pagan kingdom called "Zapotec" was discovered within weeks from the Mayan war. Other then the name they called themselves, they seemed no different, war was declared as soon as King Afonso V de avis himself had arrived on this new continent to take personal command of the armies.
The Zapotec's armies couldnt stand up to the Portuguese might and the cunning of the King! A new better province "Tohancapan" was added to the Portuguese kingdom and the Zapotec was made a vassal state just as the Mayans.

Campeche served no further purpose and was sold back to the Mayans.
Discovery of a third, crueler and mightier pagan state was discovered. The Azetcs.

The Emirate of Granada and their Northafrican allies saw their chance with a weakened Castille and declared war, this time King Afonso stepped in to help defend the brave Castillians that just started to recruit a new army after the awful Aragonese war.
A small Portuguese army was conscripted and along with the newly trained Castillian army the Emirate was pushed back. The Iberian admirals patrolled frequently and ensured the Emirate god no reinforcement from the northafricans, a few naval battles was won easily.
The war ended in total victory for the iberians and the kingdom of Castille annexed the Emirate.

With the homefront secured, King Afonso established a colony called Ceara on his way back to the main Portuguese army and invade the Aztec empire.
Sadly King Afonso V de avis demise 2 october 1453 during the voyage brought a great sadness to the entire Portuguese people and was was postponed.

His heir and son Prince Durate only three years old made the nobles brave enough to step in and take command of the great kingdom.

King Henry VII Lancaster convinced the Portuguese royal council to join in war against the aggressive, expanding kingdom of Denmark, who brutally crushed the Swedish people in their quest for independence.
And in unison with the vast Lithuanian Kingdom invaded the expanding Muscovites and forced them in full retreat.

The Danes were not to be trifled with, with great experienced army's and generals, Norway and Sweden in Personal Unions and the small nortgerman state of Holstein as an vassal.
Their Armies marching back from their "East campaign" engaged the english troops that made sieges to the danish isles. Annihilating army after army, the Portuguese sent 6000 men up to Norway to join the english 10000 strong army in akershus.
The danes reacted quickly and forced a battle in the province of agder together with the norweigan army, they were beaten back temporarily, but shortly after the Portuguese Noble Luís Araújo who was leading the army called out in despair as a second danish army was about to arrive.
To give the english army time to retreat back to the ships or just out of ignorance, Luís Araújo decided to march north into norway, and was completly wiped out.

The Danes smelling another victory for their ever victorious army decided to invade the undefended Portuguese homeland. Landing a danish and a norweigian siege army of 3000 and 2000 men, the loyal Castillians reacted and marched their armies to meet the invaders.
The Portuguese nobility fearing loss of influence if not handling it themselves forbid the Castillian armies to do more then watch and instead raised a new noble army and wiped out the invaders.

Intrigue for everyone!

It was the year 1444 and Friedrich III/IV the Peaceful, Holy Roman Emperor, Duke of Austria, King of Germany, King of the Romans etc, etc, didn't feel peaceful at all. His position as Emperor was not all that secure and Austria was just one German state among many. Something had to be done!

He began by locking at the neighboring province of Salzbourg. They were good friends of Austria but an open admission of a little rivalry quickly brought forth accusations that someone had said something about somebody elses something, which could of course not be tolerated! The Austrian Conquest of Salzburg was short, mainly consisting of an unnecessarily long siege (such stubbornness) and then happy inclusion in Austria.

Friedrich then started an extended effort to increase his influence in the HRE, sending diplomats all over Germany, making alliances and arranging marriages until some some said that even Emperor himself did not remember half of them. Those marriages sure proved their worth when the heir died - an new was born within months and the succession was ensured.

The Empire did not only need protection against outside attacks, hard as that was to coordinate. The members of the HRE turned out to be a quarrelsome bunch that would often invade each other on the slightest provocation. It was during an bold interdiction in one of these conflicts that Friedrich suddenly found himself at war with three powerful neighbors: Bohemia, Bravaria and Switzerland. But he cunningly defended Austria until more troops could be rallied and his allies arrived, turning a seemingly disastrous campaign around. The coffers were however running empty so he made the later much regretted decision to end the war, settling for large fees and the province of Niederbayern.

With his position now locking a little better the Emperor is for now content with controlling the fate of Germany trough diplomatic means. But he can see that conflicts will continue to arise until all of the HRE is firmly united under one competent rule, such as himself.

The beginning of the rise of the Great French Empire

In the year 1444 France is a kingdom in ruins, the hated Englishmen have occupied several provinces in the north and southwest part of France, several of the vassals of the French king are independant, in the nortwest the rulers of Brittany refuse to acknowledge the commonly known fact that Bretagne (the real name of the land) in reality should belong to the french king and finally in the east the king of Burgundy lurks, waiting for a chance to strike and plunder the rich french country.

In the year 1444 the Hundred-year war with England is about to end. In two swift campaigns the french armies defeats the small English armies on the continent and start to besiege the English forts on the continent. Soon the defenders of these forts are forced to surrender and peace is signed with the English king with the result that England abandons all there provinces on the continent.

The great French king then continue to consolidate his power by starting the process of annexing some of his more powerfull vassals, by recruiting sodiers to the army and by building new ships to strengten the newly founded french Royal Navy.

After some years, the king grows restless and starts to plan for war, the question is just who to attack brittany, burgundy or somone else. The king finally decides that the the two provinces that the duke of Provence own in the west really sholud belong to France. War is decleared and soon the the armies of Provence are routed and the duke comes begging for peace. Peace is signed and the provinces of Anjou and Maine are handed over to the french king.

At this time Burgundy, Aragon and Brittany forms a Coalition against France. They realized that they are no match for the great French Army by themselves, but together they might be able to survive (Ha Ha Ha, as if, the french king thought).

It only took a year or two before the crazy king of Aragon decided to attack the mighty French, and despite some early victories for the coalition of Aragon, Brittany and Burgundy the war luck soon turned aginst the coalition and then the french king in the middle of the war decided to reform the army the coalition soon suffered defeat after defeat. Peace was signed and the coalition broke up.

In the year 1465 Peace has reigned in France for several years, and theking grows restless again. Where should he now decide to march his unbeatale armies: west towards Brittany or east towards Burgundy?

Schanyway, here goes. Sorry att det blev lite sent

In the year 1444 the ruling class of England were finally able to sedate the mad king Henry the VI enough for him to lend his ears to their advice. The mad and wasteful conquests in France were to be promptly cancelled and focus would instead be set on uniting the islands the kingdom already had in a firm grip. The puny Gaelic kingdoms on the island of Éire would be swepped up using clever diplomacy, whereas the brute Scots most likely had to be coerced by way of the sword and lance.

The war in the continent was abandoned and while the troops stationed there could not be saved, the act spared countless others that could now serve the crown in more productive ways. The provinces was soon signed over to the french, and the kings advisers saw this as a new beginning rather than a failure.

Where many of the minor states of continental Europe had learned to set up alliances to protect themselves from more powerful nations, the backward kings of Éire spent most their diplomatic efforts on insulting one another in a variety of deconstructive ways. For this reason, the diplomats from England found it more difficult than first thought to assimilate them under common rule. As of this writing, only two of the three kings has sworn fealty to the English Crown, and the king's already lacking patience is all but depleted. The so called "King" of Tyrone might find his days numbered should he fail to comply before then.

The claiming of Scottish lands was more smooth as the armies of the highlands provided little resistance to the superior English troops, and soon all but a few islands and the capital remains under Scottish rule. The hour is late for King Robert IV.

Having given up the mad thoughts of a permanent English Bastion on mainland Europe, the King proclaimed that all the islands of the north atlantic was to fly English flag by the end of the century. The Kalmar Union was in a fragile state with the Vicious Dane Plundering the forests of Sweden, so the king saw his opportunity to strike at his puppet Norway. The islands sought after was quickly sieged by English Fleets and Armies, but the invation of mainland Denmark proved more diffucult than anticipated. The battles rage on on fields and oceans, and while the English will surely prevail, it is clear that the cost will be great.

One night in late 1444 the King of Muscowy had a visionary dream of a great empire called Russia, that stretched from the shores of the Baltic Sea across a yet uncharted continent to a yet undiscovered sea in the far east. The dream returned to the King several nights in a row and he could no longer interpret as something else then it was - a message from the great god (the flying spaghetti monster)! He immidiately started the preparations for a military campaign to take the first small step towards his goal: To quell his irritating neighbour to the west Novgorod and reach the Baltic Sea. After a few years the preparations were done and the war started against a lonely Novgorod that had foolishly quit the Lithuanian alliance. The attack went well and after a few years Novgorod ceded almost half of its provinces to the great Muscowy.

Not everyone understood the divine right Muscowy had to expand its borders and claim the title of Russia though, and a coalition was soon formed against further expansion by Novgorod Lithuania and the Livonian order. The King thought that a few years of peace would calm things down, but boy was he wrong! A beuatiful day out the blue Novgorod declared war, and along came Lithuania with its allies Denmark Norway Sweden and countless others. The catastrophe was imminent and the King could do nothing else then to send a few desperate peace offers before it was all over. Thankfully the Lithuanian alliance accepted an offer to cede a province and let one of the muscowian vassals go and the immidiate threat was avoided. Perhaps because of the sudden aggression from England and Portugal against the lithuanian allies Norway and Denmark. At present Muscowy lies silent while it licks its wounds and cowers from the thought of a new united attack, but in the far reaches of the kingdom a thought has been planted: Someday, Muscowy will become the great empire of Russia!

AAR Castille 1480

The Second Catalan War

In the year of our lord, 1465, the Castillian monarch Juan II saw the dawn of his 45:th year on the throne. The army had been rebuilt and the economy was flourishing. However the king was worried about his son and heir, Enrique de Trastámara, who was getting into his forties. The prince had shown little skill or tact at court and the nobles were starting to whisper about the succession. To avoid further complications the old king sent him to the army, with the hope that his trusted friend general Cortès, would at least teach the prince one trade that would benefit the country.

The military council had long advocated for an offensive against the treacherous neighbor in the east, but the king wanted reassurances this time so before any actions were taken the relations with the allies of Aragon were increased such as the Doge of Venice. In addition the king commissioned the creation of the Royal Armada, to secure the naval superiority in the Mediterranean. In 1471, when all preparations were set and the Catalan navy was further east assisting the Doge against the Sultan, war was declared.

General Cortès and his army fell into Catalonia from the west and he met the enemy outside Valencia. Prince Enrique led his army from the south and arrived in time to Valencia to ensure a complete victory for Castille. The armada kept reinforcements from arriving from the sea and what resistance the retreating Catalan army could muster was hunted down and destroyed by Cortès or the Prince. Soon Navarra had been reconquered and not long after that most of the Catalan mainland was under Castillian flag.

When the Catalan fleet got word that their capital was under siege, they sailed west and for several months they evaded the royal armada under admiral Nol Èadèr. Outside Mallorca battle was finally engaged and with help from a Portugese squadron the Catalans suffered heavy losses and had to retreat to Sardinia. The Venetians who had cowardly joined the Catalans in the war, now sent a fleet west to engage the Iberian armada and help relieve their blockaded allies in Sardinia. This grave error from the Doge would cost him dearly. The two fleets engaged in view of Portoscuso where the Catalan ships were anchored but no help for the Venetians came that day, which ended with a total victory for the Iberian coalition. Only two venetian ships survived the battle and they are now proudly flying the Castillian flag.
In the peace that followed in 1477, Navarra and Mallorca were liberated from their oppressing rule and also large parts of Aragon was ceded to Castille, effectively leaving Catalonia as a small stretch of land on the eastern part of the peninsula.

During this war king Juan was busy improving relations with the other catholic rulers of the world. Disturbing news came from the far north of the expanding Danish empire that had exiled the former king of Sweden to Berlin. Where his daughter was married of to the ruling duke under great wailing and protests, ensuring a continued dynasty in northern Germany.

From the emperor in Vienna came contradicting rumors that talked about assassination and usurpation while in England peasants revolted against the long wars with the Danish. English diplomats delivering complaints and grievances flooded the European courts and soon most foreign diplomats regretted ever learning English.

Also during this era, tales of lands far to the west, ripe for the taking, had escaped the court of Lisbon. The king therefore commissioned an expedition of his own, led by Cristobal de Benavides, that has the goal to map the sea-routes to this new world.

AAR 2 Portugal: Pagans, the holy father and the new world!
The year of our lord 1460

King Duarte Ascended the Portuguese throne after years of the nobles squabbling. The King made an example of his former regency council by putting them on trial for crimes against the crown.Resulting in heavy fines and in some cases banishment. Shortly after the King set sail towards the new world to oversee the conquest of the mighty Aztek Empire.

Conquistador Filipe da Fonseca had prepared the army and at the battle of Sayultecas the last remaints of the Aztek army was slaughtered by the superior Portuguese forces.
vzNpptl.jpg

The Azteks was brought to heel and was forced into vassalization.
u42NjPY.jpg

During the following years first the Maya and later the Zapotec was annexed into Portugal. And the population started to convert to christianity resulting in that King Duarte could add "Protector of the Papacy" to his titles.

Nuno Tristão returned from his exploration with new mapped territory and another big tribal kingdom further to the north called the "Creek".
A colony was established in proximity to this newly discovered tribe.
King Duarte quickly decided that the Creek should embrace christianity aswell. After the missionaries was refused entry, the declaration of war and vassalization shortly followed.

More colonies was established in the neighbouring area.
A messenger from the court in Lisbon reached the king shortly after the conquest of the Creek, The council had accepted a call to arms from the Portuguese long time ally King Juan II of Castille. The war was against the King of Aragon and Naples and his ally the Doge of Venice.

Feeling quite embarrassed over having done nothing to help his allies in the war. He decided that the Portuguese royal navy immediately should set sail back towards the mediterranean.

After quickly conferring with Castillian admiral Nol Èadèr battle was sought outside the isle of Mallorca. The Catalan navy caught by suprise was easily defeated and they retreated back into the harbour.

After some quick repairs of minor damages, the two navies set sail again under admiral Nol Èadèr, The remaining Catalan Navy still remaining in harbour, the venetian navy was engaged just outside of Sardinia, the victory for the iberian alliance was total, the venetian navy was total wiped out.
And thus the last resistance in the war.

Back in the royal court in Lisbon King Duarte was informed by his spymaster that some of his exiled nobles from the former regency council had sought protection under King Juan II of Castille.
The King was worried about the possibility of the secrets
about the location of the new world would now leak out.
