EU4 - Development Diary - 7th of August 2018

Good day all! As the industrious gears of Sweden begin to turn once more after a month of culturally enforced vacation, Paradox too shifts back into gear. Today we will be covering some additional missions that we added, as well as the National Ideas that we have yet to cover.

Firstly, while we originally did our Missions dev diary way back in May, we since found that we couldn't bear to have our new and fancy Tibetan region void of specific missions. Key players in India all got their own mission trees and the minors have a North/South divide of missions too. Even the ambitious Taungu got attention but Tibet was left out. We decided this would not stand and as such, @neondt put together a Tibetan Mission Tree for all who update to 1.26 Mughals.

Tibetan Missons for U.jpg

These missions are very much geared towards uniting the fractured Tibetan lands and going onwards to
Restoring Tibet to their greatest borders. Expect to butt heads with powers in China, India and the Steppes if you are looking to fulfill your Tibetan destiny. Mission rewards include claims on said borders, development, interesting events such as contentions with the Khans and some hefty military bonuses.

This puts our total list of missions introduced in this next release to:
  • Vijayanagar
  • Bahmanis
  • Delhi
  • Orissa
  • Bengal
  • Mughals
  • Mewar
  • Hindustan
  • Gujarat
  • Malwa
  • Taungu :D
  • Bharat
  • Tibet (free)
  • North Indians (free)
  • South Indians (free)
  • Muscovy (Third Rome)
  • Novgorod (Third Rome)
  • Russia (Third Rome)
  • Russian Minors (Third Rome)
Since we only showed Muscovy -> Russia mission trees for the Russians last time, I'd like to bring Novgorod to the table, since it takes impressive management to succeed with Novgorod and keep Muscovite power in check.

Nov Missions.jpg

Novgorod enjoys missions very much geared towards Baltic domination and establishing themselves as the trade powerhouse of the region. In a sense, they enjoy more freedom in this regard that Muscovy, as Novgorod can work through their own missions or reform into Russia and enjoy the Russian mission tree, or even do one then the other.

2 Mission trees feels lonely, I will add a Third one, depending on what is requested to be seen in this dev diary. We showed off Dheli, Mughals, South Indians and Muscovy->Russia last time.

Now let us take a look at Ideas. National Ideas are free with the update as they always have been, and while we've looked at many idea groups so far, many were for the big league formable nations in the region. Let's look at more of the regular Joes:

Ideas India.jpg

I had this bright idea to perhaps contextualize nations' locations before going through their ideas, since I wouldn't even trust myself to locate Patna on a map unaided. Let's see what the ideas are for Sindh, Junagarh (Gujarati group) Mysore and Patna (Garjati group) are. Why these nations? Well, each of them are astute choices for particular achievements in Dharma which we'll be talking about in a future Dev Diary. Try your hand at guessing them.

A general rise in pay for public workers should reduce instances of corruption in our government."

        global_trade_goods_size_modifier = 0.1
"While the Mysorean economy is strong in many ways we envy the silk industries of Bengal and Gujarat. The best way to improve and support our domestic production might be to send forth agents to study how others have fared and then implement reforms to mimik these things in our own way. Together with the excellent craftsmanship of our own artisans this should allow our economy to flourish."

fort defense = 0.15
 "Many would consider controlling the hills and jungles of Gondwana, Jharkhand and the Garjats a daunting task and it is true that holding our realm together isn't always easy.\nThe key to doing so lies in controlling and maintaining the many little forts that dot these regions.\nBy securing the loyalty of the chieftains in control of these forts, and making sure they have what they need to keep them in good shape, we can be sure to be able to resist even quite powerful enemies."

    garjati_ancient_mandalas =
        legitimacy = 1
"For centuries the Garjat country has been divided into a number of Mandalas, and while their origin is now a distant mystery they remain the central points to which many of the smaller tribes and states in this region are loyal. Regardless who has conquered or expanded into Orissa or the Garjat country these structures makes rule both more efficient and less full of friction than it would otherwise be."

    garjati_tribal_feudatories =
        global_manpower_modifier = 0.15
 "The political landscape of the Garjats can seem hard to understand to some. We are able to call in troops from a much wider area than our geographic extent would at first indicate, as there are feudatories loyal to us all over this country."

    garjati_extend_tanks_and_reservoirs =
        development_cost = -0.1
 "Not all lands under our control could be called fertile and suited for agriculture. Especially not if one compared them to the lowlands of the Mahanadi Delta or the Indo-Gangetic plain. For this reason kings and princes have for centuries spent whatever money they had on the construction of great tanks and reservoirs.\nWe must continue this tradition and invest what we can into such things, ensuring that we can have a productive agricultural sector even in lands such as these."

    garjati_jungle_warfare =
        infantry_power = 0.1
 "The Garjat country is dissimilar from many parts of the subcontinent in that it is wilder, and less settled. Jungles and hills cover the entire region and traditional cavalry is much less useful here. Instead we have come to devise our own mode of warfare, reliant on small scale raiding, elephants, and good knowledge of a land that is hard to scout. As we expand we must adapt these skills to new areas, never forgetting that through such tactics even a small army can defeat a much larger foe."

    garjati_jagannath_cult =
        tolerance_own = 2
 "Our lands are in general more open to various religions and cults than many others but the cult of Jagannath, the ‘Lord of the Universe’, transcends faith and time. This deity has protected us and our ancestors for many generations and while some might find our worship a bit unorthodox it unifies the entire region as one."

    garjati_patronize_economic_growth =
        global_trade_goods_size_modifier = 0.1
"Some would claim that the Garjat country is not rich but there are in fact a great number of natural resources under our control. There are few places as abundant in good timber as the hills of our people and for many years it has been the primary export of this region. We must encourage the growth and effectivisation of the timber industry and further capitalize on one of our greatest assets."

That's pretty much our lot for today. There are more national ideas that have been added of course but we can't spill all the beans just yet. Next week we'll look at the Content Pack which tell be launching alongside Dharma. Anyone who has been following our Dev Clash will be able to tell it's Pimp My Ride for Elephants, but we'll take a closer ganded none the less.

Speaking of Dev Clash, we are back into the thick of the action Today. Tune into our channel over at twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive 1500 CEST to watch the world in flames once more after our Summer hiatus.

EDIT: By popular request, the Taungu Mission Tree

View attachment 395534

The Taungu tree focuses not only on the Consolidation of the Burma region, but also conflicts in South East Asia, Bengal and China. There are also internal missions on building up your nation and protecting your faith in the area.

Te remind ourselves of the new setup in Burma: The Burmese region has been given a thorough overhaul in patch 1.26 by our recent addition to the EU4 team @neondt ! To better portray the situation at the start and the rising Ava kingdom we have added a number of new Shan and Burmese states, most of which are tributaries of Ava at start as well as a general increase in the depth and province density of the region.,

View attachment 395537

To further highlight the separated nature of Burma the inland is now also its own, Burmese, Trade Node with trade incoming from Chengdu and outgoing to Bengal and the Burmese culture group has been separated from the Tibetan group.

In the government overhaul in Dharma, there will also be a “Mandala” government reform that is available to the Burmese and countries in South East Asia.

Seriously I am not all that impressed with how the mission system actually works. The mission trees already in the game feel like they're to conquest focused to many permanent claims and not a lot of real depth. Having a mission tree with loads of permanent claims is too powerful. I could accept that from say the ottomans but for say England or Denmark it's just weird. Or the muscovy one which is in game which can give muscovy permanent claims on all of novgorod for almost no effort (hope its been fixed in the upcoming version).

Missions should be woven into what's happening a lot more and more just be diffrences in scale bonuses and permanent claims. Say Sweden their first mission on their unique path is breaking free from Denmark. It would be better if there was. a mission that allowed you a bonus to help you launch an independence war like say get support. Which could then fire one of those events which helps sweden break free like the engelbrekt rebellion. Or maybe a trigger an event for the hansa members where they can support Sweden's independence war financially like they did in reality.

What does this have to do with the topic? I can't tell you what to put in these I don't know the history of these places well enough but make it interesting not just blobby permanent claims (And if you need to use permanent claims add them in small chunks where achieving one unlocks the next batch not like muscovy who gets claims to everything Novgorod has all at once. Even in reality it took two wars for them to conquer Novgorod). Add some narrative to it have the sucess in the missions fire some events. And let people around react to which missions have been fulfilled or not. Like the stuff I suggested for Sweden. But relating to these countries and what was actually going on in them.

Since we only showed Muscovy -> Russia mission trees for the Russians last time
Sorry I can't seem to find this where exactly? Or do you mean last DLC?

Edit: never mind I found it.
Better than what currently is burned still prefer if they had to do a little more to get claims on Novgorod. I seem to recall they didn't conquer then right at the start of the period.

I really like that we'll be getting a proper tibetan mission tree. Though I agree to some extent with Thedungen, atm it looks like all tibetan countries will start with permanent claims on both western and eastern tibet. But I won't go there until I see how it looks in game

One mission I want to raise a concern over though is the"support the gelugpa" which I assume will be universal for all tibetans, despite tibet being at this point divided between different schools, gelukpa being just one, with kingdoms supporting different schools for dominance. The mighty Ringpungpa of Tsang for example were enemies of the gelugpa, banning them from the lhasa prayer festival once they took control of the city

When you originally showed off the map change, Punjab was the new vassal of Delhi, but in this map they seem to have been replaced with Sirhind. Is this a completely new tag, or is it replacing Punjab?

The political map of India is starting to look like an oversized HRE.

The 'Danzig or War' focus on the Novgorod tree. How many wars can we pin on that city? It's the Helen of Troy of metropolises.

Is "U" a new tag?

Should really be an achievement of some sort :p

Eliminate U by the end of 1444.

This is the best news right here.

This DD has got me hyped for my Sindh and Tibet runs now, I've still never had a proper Indian game yet.

Oh and one more vote for the Taungu tree please! :D
