The map only highlights each player's starting region. We'll pick the actual provinces once we start the game at the beginning of the first session. Ideas and such can be saved/planed beforehand though.

I'm wondering if the closeness to Persia and India is going to be a big advantage for Groogy and TheLetterZ?

It's also going to be interesting to see how Imse will play in such a central position, it's way different from her usual out of the way start locations.

We did not really pick regions ourselves. It was settled with a die.

Ahh gotcha, Goodluck to you all anyway, looking forward to seeing a custom nation showdown! Make sure to max morale, combat ability and some nice military tradition, need to super soldier/prussia it up. Don't take less then 5 provinces or you will struggle from my experience,

Can also see someone probably doing somthing gamey with mercs too, for dirt cheap mercs.

Does random setup also randomise the trade nodes and the direction trade flows in or does everything still flow to Channel, Genoa and Venice. Because that can make a lot of difference in good starting positions

These are some things that remain "normal":
Province modifiers (such as Kopparberget or Centers of Trade).
Trade Nodes.
Province religion/culture of provinces not taken by players.

It changes the development and the borders, normally un-colonized provinces may become part of starting random nations. It also causes any non-fort buildings that might exist to be removed (forts stay in place). Cultures and religions (unless adjusted with custom nation selection shenanigans), trade routes/nodes, and basic geography are unchanged.

At one point I had the full set of HRE mechanics in one of those games (I randomly started as emperor, much to my disgust). Either one of the set-up options available changes it or they removed that as the game I started today didn't have an empire at game start.

Thanks guys, then I think da9l has a great place with a probable firm hold on the English Channel. Low countries will of course also be a great place. Here's hoping for some nice Anglo-Dutch wars

I suspect that most players won't spoil anything before we start playing, to avoid prying eyes if nothing else. Besides, it will be more interesting if the commentators can check them out for you as we play. :)

It can be, of course it can also be a low development wasteland fed by a lot of low development wastelands and the real powerhouse provinces are found in Tibet...

That is quite interesting. Worth keeping in mind that we have random nations on, so what nations spawn around us is unknown at this time, in both size and idea sets. France could spawn in China and Prussia could be Ireland.

I've been away most of the week as well so haven't done as much pre-game diplomacy as I would've liked. It is definitely going to be a challenging start given my neighbors and their potential desires on my land. Time will tell of course as no one is being particularly open about their plans or their nation setups.

I'm also a little concerned that some behemoth AI might spawn near me if I don't take too many provinces. Having a 400 development AI spawn across regions, like France/Germany or France/Iberia, would be a real problem.

Time will tell of course as no one is being particularly open about their plans or their nation setups.

I'm also a little concerned that some behemoth AI might spawn near me if I don't take too many provinces. Having a 400 development AI spawn across regions, like France/Germany or France/Iberia, would be a real problem.

Ah i didn't know that France, Prussia could spawn anywhere, that does make things alot more unpredictable, and those provinces in france are costly point wise, i have noticed this, the ai smells weakness, if you take less then 5 provinces, you're going to need some goodluck, if you're starting in france, want to perhaps take atleast 10 provinces maybe given your starting area. ai really does smell weakness. Da9L has won the lottery to some extent, can potentially get away with 5 provinces and putting the rest into buffs, although still tempting fate given what you said about random ai spawning. My biggest worry has Da9L would be a grand naval coaltion forming against him mid/end game, hence having strong naval focus, just so he can fight all of europe at sea.

For you, i'd probably try to button up a bit against johan , maybe a little buffer so not to annoy johan to much, but with a focus with starting with normandy and paris areas for wealth, although you "may" be able to game/weaken the ai spawning points a bit, if you choose your provinces in a fashion that it leaves little pockets that can be taken easily if you catch my drift? so little enclaves, divide and conquer? idk, could backfire, so don't curse my name if things go wrong :p
