I can't emphasize enough, as others have mentioned, that you should take a break from the game. Play other games, especially genres. Or better yet, do something completely different like read a book. If you like history, pick up a particular book on the history of a region which may whet your appetite to play a game in that area later.

That tends to happen when you play too much of any game. Currently I have 971h on EU4, and I'd really like to get to 1000, but I just lack interest in the game after playing so much.

Generally I 'only' play during the 2-3 months per xpac that the mechanics have been adjusted appropriately, right up to the next doc release, then take 4-6 weeks to enjoy other games while the new dlc gets sorted out.

Have played through the first 6 assassin's creed, several games of CIV: BE, pillars of eternity, and a few long ck2 campaigns since eu4 has been out. Nothing wrong with taking a break.

I had a wonderful playthrough as Bourbonnais-recreated France going that was especially fun due to the trouble Burgundy caused me early... and the whole "no French ideas upon forming them even though you started under Historical and earned them as a OPM with Generic National Ideas which is BULL S-" but once I learned that Burgundy was getting hit with the nerf bat come next expansion, probably because PDS felt that Francypants was underperforming in some unknowable way due to the BRB, I felt kind of drained knowing playing as Provence or Orleans or even Lorraine next would be easier in comparison.

OP, I absolutely agree with you that EUIV gets boring.

It's a sad truth, but EUIV can be boring after playing and going through all the mechanics for so long.

I am a bit at a loss of what to do about it. Before EUIV was my way to chill out and conquer some people after a hectic day of gf, work, and school, and now... it doesn't have the same flavor anymore.

I know exactly what you mean. I took a long break from EU4 and I've been playing CK2 for the past few months mostly. I come back here to check and BAM, NEW DLC COMING SOON. Like, I still love EU4, but I can't get myself to play it until the new DLC is released.

Case in point: I started a Denmark colonial game, annexed vassals, took Baltics, took British Isles, and now I stopped because I felt "bored"... Like Protestantism is going to get new mechanics, and who knows what else in the future dev diaries? I'm putting that game on hold till the new DLC is out

I actually burnt out around the time I got my WC, in 1.7. I played a few more campaigns but the previous rebel system and the current siege system took a toll on me.
1.12 looks great, though, and it has awesome potential at reducing tedium so I'm patiently waiting for the release.

It just sounds like you need to do something else. It doesn't have to be strictly worthwhile, but definitely something else. This is something a lot of us go through. It stinks.
It might sound weird to suggest a little less EU4 on an EU4 forum, but that's precisely what I'm suggesting. Completing the game can become like work sometimes. Don't try to muscle through it. Instead arrange to meet a friend, or work on something completely different (preferably not a computer game - they're too similar). If you have a garden, plant something, if you have painting supplies, create a picture of something.. pencils -> sketch something. Or write something.

Now I think I'm going to take my own advice and read a novel I got out from the library. =)

I don't know what happened but for a prolonged period of time I am horribly bored by EU4. I mean, I had the best game ever as Japan, then very nice Swedish game, and then I launch it as different countries and try to immerse but everything feels extremely bland, like if I was staring at a blank Word page. Totally no excitement, no immersion, nothing, just slow clicking on buttons and looking at numbers. I played 80 years as Uzbek->Bukhara, very nice country but I stopped playing as I have totally no pleasure from it.

This is weird because that happened suddenly and dramatically and I am still excited for Common Sense DLC and 1.12 patch but when I launch the game itself I feel nothing. Sure I have a little problems with mood recently but for example Pillars of Eternity still entertain me. I did a break from EU4 for 2 - 3 weeks and when I return I still don't enjoy anything. This is so deep void I am not even sure if in a current state I would enjoy new DLC.

Does anyone have/had something like that?

Do some drugs. That should do the trick.

Just get a break. i got 1.200 hours on eu4, and i'm not playing since 2 months. I've never got so many hours on other games, and i also recognize that i skipped almost completely eu3. That gave me so much interest and hype on eu4 that i've pratically loved it since the first days and only played that. On the other hand I still need to finish shadow of mordor. That is a game that instead can be easily burned out (or can easily bore). For the platinum you need max 30 hours and i still couldn't top them (part of that can be blamed to EU which has always cannibalized my free time).

Anyways no game can survive to time, expecially if you spend too much on it. That's why i will never sell my ps3 because sometimes i turn it on and play on SSX, Dead Nation, all games that are 99% of the time boring (because i've burned them out!) but when friends come they are totally more interesting than eu4. Game is a situational item after all, it's EU4 that is insane and can suck all our interest, and when it does not, it feels weird

also yeah dlc announcement syndrome...

p.s. have you tried multiplayer? because knowing all mechanics can be boring, but having to know them all for the purpose of annihilating humans instead of ai... that's another kind of entertainment...

Depression sucks. I hate playing armchair psychiatrist, but I'm going to anyway. Get some sun, get some exercise, and hang out with friends. It's a time-honored method. When you're depressed you always feel like just doing things by yourself, but that doesn't really help at all. EU4 will still be here when/if you decide to come back. Time heals all, etc. Good luck!

i got a different opinion.

I had same happening a lot when I was a bachelor. It was mainly due to serious gaming addiction and lack of other time spending.

I think the real reason you get an overall adversity period against all or this game, is because you need more then DOPAMINE in life.

My advice? Call some friends, go bowling, go for some pubs, take a few days to travel to some place with water and a LOAD of nature, and just RELAX for a while. Increase social life, do some body activities in nature and you will feel better.

Also, regarding the game: consider setting very hard goals for yourself at a start of a campaign. Don't do anything mediocre. Or wait till next dlc.

Thats me as Eu4 fan talking.

I feel total meaninglessness and void in all activitiws until I meet with people, explore some brilliant plot or read something which somehow manages to stimulate me - peaks of attention - I also run regularly over last weeks. I launch eu4, click buttons and I feel total nihilism 'damn... so I will finish the game as next country... so what? It will all pass...' Well that's nice I try to explore outside world but I am a bit worried by that deep anhedonia affecting even relatively high quality intelligent entertainment such as eu4.

In fact I am now in the weird state of going from straightforward Internet/game addiction to opposite extreme of feeling sick when I interact with them even when I try to enjoy them.

I frankly think that the game's interest to you is the least of your concerns right now. It is a symptom of a bigger problem for you. It sounds like your suffering from depression (I know because I have had a bout of that too). You need to address that, and once that is addressed, your interest in things you used to enjoy will return. Please, take care of yourself, bro. This is a game, your LIFE is real, and it matters. Find somebody to talk it over with or at least lean on if that helps you. If you need to take to somebody, send me something.
