So, I don't have EU4.

I have EU3 and like it quite a bit-- Not as much as Hearts of Iron 3, but more than Victoria 2 or crusader kings (As for vic2, I enjoy the mechanics of the game, but as Poland is my favorite country to play in paradox games-- you can see why it's not my favorite)

I've been tossing around the idea of getting EU4, but I wanted to ask people here first.

Is it really worth the price?

How much has been improved over EU3?

What is personally your favorite change over EU3?

In HOI there is a lot more emphasis on combat and units than in Vicky or EU3-- does EU4 add this kind of HOI3-type depth to units and combat?

Anything else that may be useful to my decision?

This is the last place to ask for constructive feedback about EU4. Everyone here hates EU4 :p just look at any thread and there will be people crying that the game is irreparably broken because the Aggressive Expansion penalties have been mildly tweaked in some patch or other. This is the worst forum on Paradox Plaza by a long way.

It's pretty good, yes. It's probably worth the price, it has many, many features improved over EU3 (in particular trade). No, it's not as deep combat-wise as HoI; it's the most simple and easy-to-play Paradox game, which is not a bad thing. It's much more polished overall than HoI3, being part of the new Paradox with better QA which came about after the disaster that was Gettysburg: Armored Warfare.

If a HoI level of complexity is what you're after, though, then wait for HoI4. It's still the same, fairly simple and intuitive game that the EU series has always been- less (compared to others, anyway) about complex mechanics and more about abstract strategy.

Considering there's a Steam sale on, it's definitely worth the 50% off price.

EUIV combat isn't terribly different from EU3 combat. You do, through ideas, get better control on improving aspects of combat (discipline, morale, force limits) but it's the same basic set of mechanics. Naval combat is similarly unchanged, although we do have light (read: trade) ships as a new class. There are a whole bunch of relations and diplomatic improvements over EU3, but it's really a whole lot of minor changes rather than anything major... except maybe for two-way opinions (like in CK2). As for my favorite change, I'd say the trade system. It's far from perfect, but it's not the arcane wizardry that EU3's CoT system was. Art of War also launched with two of my favorite new systems: religious leagues and centers of reformation. The former helps recreate the 30 years war while the latter aids in creating geographically sensible areas of Protestantism and Reformed.

The one thing to keep in mind is that EUIV is hampered by the same issue that EU3 was, and that's the part where it depicts 400 years of history. The mechanics will never be as taught as they are in HoI and Victoria.

It is a very good game and gets improvement every few months, not to different from Eu3 but I like the changes from Eu3 alot.
Best ways are probably to play the demo and check let's plays of the game.

Depends if you like to change play style every six months or so and how much you get ticked off by bugs. I have everything in the game (thats more than 100$ outside of sales) and most likely I will continue to support it, but I would honestly love to see it finally wrapped up.

I have been playing since EU 1 and I have to say I prefer eu4 over eu3. My biggest complaint about eu3 was that each country felt the same as opposed to eu4 which each country gets different national ideas and your choice of idea groups.
