Depends on who you ask. A cynic would say "so they can bring out an expansion for the Napoleonic age" a 'fanboy' might say "because the EUIII engine can't model that era properly".

What about doing the battles in EU3 yourself, like in rome total war, so the player can do the famous battles himself with the number of units on scale 1:10. That would be awesome and more realistic.

Why did they leave out the battles of Alexander? Or the Punnic wars? Or the Second World War? All the interesting bits are left out! Outrageous!

/sarcasm

By the way, if the only fun part of Europa Universalis for you is the Napoleonic wars, you really should look for an other game.

A realist might say that an engine that does a decent job modelling the EU time period cannot model a pre-EU era form or warfare or a post-EU one; that it would be better to restrict the game to the period that it's engine ios designed to handle; and then to use the basic framework and then remodel the engine for other games.

I don't see how releasing a "Napoleonic expansion" would change the fundamental issues that the engine required to drive it would have to be different; thus the expansion would "break" combat in the pre-Napoleonic era and ruin the first 3+ centuries of the game. I would think it would make more sense to release a separate game that covers the years between the end of EU3 and the beginning of V:R (Yes...my dream game of a really honest port of EiA that I've always wished someone would make if Hasbro weren't so annoying about licencing EiA rights :( ).

Of course if PI does end up putting out a Napoleonic era expansion (and if it works without breaking the early game) when please feel free to dig up this post and make me eat my words. :p

Knights Orders are a godd idea , even if i d see them more a prestigous thing than a real military issue. So i d say you shouldnt get armys. With orders like the Golden Fleece you should only be able to create them when you have a very high prestige. When you have it it should give you some bonus on relations with other monarchs (not other leaders (e.g. republican) as for example other rulers where members of the order.
At least this is what i know from my Bavarian history , as the St. George Order in bavaria was mostly a prestigous order in which only the nobles could enter. But the leaders of Bavaria where also members of the order of the golden fleece (Austrian version) showing there tight dynastical relationship with Austria, eben if there where often political differences and even wars.

Actually, to use the example of the "Order of St. Michael" created by Louis XI of France, the real purpose of such a Knightly Order should be to "massage the egos" of the troublesome nobility. Instead of giving them additional lands or income (thereby increasing their strength should they rebel), you give them an "honor" that is somewhat expensive and time-consuming to accept (and thus decrease their ability to be a pain-in-the-ass).

What I wish EU3 had what I always lacked in EU2:

- The ability to GRANT Military access to someone.

In EU2 I always were frustated by my vassals or allies stupid refusal to ASK for military access through my lands when they waged wars and needed it and never asked for it.

- The ability to forbid a vassal granting military access to my enemy.
If my vassal grants military access to my bitter enemy I should be able to ask my vassal to revoke that military access to that enemy.

More generous search engine

Given the amount of provinces, it is a good thing that the game has a search engine. However, it is sad that you have to spell the name perfectly correctly to actually find the damn thing. A more generous and intelligent search engine that can suggest the closest thing to what you have written would be great.

More interesting piracy

Piracy in EU2 was pretty boring and hunting down pirates was too little like combat and too much like cleaning your room. Either piracy should be changed, scrapped or you should have the option of putting a fleet on some sort of anti-piracy-duty-autopilot (somewhat like naval or air missions in HOI2) so you don't need to hunt pirates manually.

This can be polemic...

A non-historic option.
This way:
- Only random events;
- Only random leaders, with random status;
- Random kings...

Of course that "random" should depend on policies (sliders), country size…

It seems to be a recurring problem in Paradox' game design that they have plenty of history buffs that want plenty of historic events. On the other hand they have plenty of wargamers that think events just harness them in, makes the game more predictable and (to them) less interesting and gives advantages to the people who have studied and memorized the events. Finally they argue that historic events, paradoxically makes the player act and think in a most ahistoric fashion. The real certainly Hitler did not know in 1936 that he could get Austra for three if he just waited tilll 1938.

Being Swedes and prone to compromising Paradox have so far tried to follow a middle road. In my opinion it would be better to have the option of choosing between no historic events (including random kings and generals), some historic events (roughly the way things are now) and full historic events (for the history buff).

Problem is of course that the AI must be able of handling all three options competently. Perhaps these options are best limited to multiplayer.

I do not know if someone allready have asked for it, but:
A good converter from EU3 to Victoria (Revulotion) that includes the trublesome time between 1778-1815. For example, you have the option to
- convert your EU2 or EU3 game with the revolutions, colonial uprising and so on so that some sorts of free states exists in south and north america,
or
- you convert the game as is, without any landchanges
or
- normalize history. The free states in north america will be USA and Mexico and Latin america. A strong german state will exist with the name preussia, The anglo-states will be the Brittish empire
or
- Export only this. And you get the option to choose counties so you export only your country or some of the countries you choose to Victoria.

The last one is my favorite, since it will give me the option to for example play a sweden that didnt lose everything to russia. Or a still existing Poland. But still gives me the option to play the "real" victoria

You have corsars, which are in somekind related to your country, as you can see at the top of the EU3 screenshots, the men without an eye. But don't make confusion between pirates and corsars, they pretty different (corsars are hired by a country, pirates work on their own)

Indeed. It seems fairly obvious that the chap with an eyepatch is a pirate, or to be more precise, a privateer.

It's been discussed before, but my guess is:

Diplomat; Colonist; Spy; Missionary; Privateer
