I have been loads of fun playing HOI2:DD on my Mac recently. And I had great time playing EU2 on my Windows-machine back in the day. But since I don't have Windows anymore, this begs the question: Will EU3 be ported to OSX? If the answer is yes, is there an ETA for it? I would buy it the moment it was released :).

I highly doubt it.

As far as I know, Microsoft hasn't given Apple a license to implement DirectX (9) on Mac OS X ;)

Basically whenI buy my mac the only reason Vista will be installed onto it is to play Paradox games.

Well, they could use OpenGL instead. We have Direct3D-games that can be played with hardware-accelerated 3D in Linux. They intercept the Direct3D-calls, and transform those to OpenGL-calls. So it is doable, and the performance is pretty good.

Ah yes, I forgot this is the only way games make it onto OS X. Not porting the engine or anything; or even making a deal with a common porting company to do all the hard work for you. Nope Paradox would never and have never done that.

Yes...when I get my next computer I'm not getting Windows (not if the version that's out then is anything like Vista, at least; XP's okay). But I will maintain a cheap self-built Windows desktop for playing Paradox games.

Too much money for too little return, I think. As someone who is highly likely to switch away from Windows for his main computer, I don't like it, but it's true.

The next Mac OS X version Leopard (10.5) will come with an Apple-supported dual boot system called Bootcamp. It will generate a Windows XP driver CD so you can install (your own copy of) Wndows XP and boot into either. I'm probably going to get an Intel iMac when that comes out, mid-year I believe.

sure. already does
Not according to Apple:
Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp, you can download a public beta today.

What you’ll need

* Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.6 or later (check Software Update)
* The latest Firmware updates (check Support Page)
* 10GB free hard disk space
* An Intel-based Mac
* A blank recordable CD
* A printer for the instructions (You’ll want to print them before installing Windows, really.)
* A bona fide installation disc for Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2, Home or Professional (No multi-disc, upgrade or Media Center versions.)

When you boot it into XP then of course, yes. But if you are talking about the ports to the Mac OS (eg that Virtual Programming did for EU2) then I have no real idea but I suspect not. You could ask in the EU2 mod forum.

Well, there are OS X mods available for HOI2 at least (CORE etc.). Although I haven't used them myself, since they require manual installation, whereas on Windows they have automatic installers.

And, regarding the comment of not porting games to OS X due to "too little gain"... Well, I spend quite a bit of time playing HOI2: DD on OS X, so it is doable. They have done it before, and there's no reason why they couldn't do it again. Yes, I might use Windows instead, but I have no license for Windows, so I would have to buy it at retail, and that costs quite a bit of money. And booting between Windows and OS X would be an extra hassle I wouldn't look forward to.

DirectX handles more than just the pretty pictures on your screen. ;)

The other stuff could be handled as well. I would say that Direct3D is the hardest to handle, since 3D-graphics are quite complex and it will suffer badly if there's any kind of latency/low framerate.

But, of course, they could just port the whole thing, instead of using wrappers. Since HOI and others have been ported, I don't think that porting EU3 is impossible.

Unfortunately, what they claim on their website and the facts are very different things. The reality is, they haven't written Vista specific drivers for Mac specific hardware (iSight and such), but since you're just on PC architecture and all of the key components already have Vista drivers or working generic drivers, of course it will work. It's just a PC afterall, bootcamp itself is simply a bootloader and partition tool. You can install Windows 98, 95, ME, whatever. You can install Linux, Unix, FreeBSD and so on.

On topic anyway, of course this is going to be made for Mac, every other game has, I thought maybe my sarcasm eluding to them just hiring a company to do it (like they did with previous games) would be realised, but I guess not.
