EU3 doesn't seem to work with Windows 7.. Anyway to fix this?

I got the demo of it from Steam, but as soon as I try to start it it just crashes. This is really unfortunate because I was looking forward to trying this and likely buying it after trying the demo, but I don't see the point if it won't actually work on my computer. Is there a fix for this? My computer uses Windows 7.

It works on mine. Have you tried creating a shortcut and assigning compatibility mode?

Windows 7 64 bit here and no problems at all. Is it an older demo perhaps, the game has been around for a while after all.

i have tried and it works fine with windows 7 32-bit, windows 7 64-bit, windows 8 64-bit

Perhaps the best question here is, what demo are you using? I know I have played the past 3 expansions on Windows 7 64 bit. Maybe the demo you found is for the first game?

Anyway - I have also run EU3 (and CKII) on Windows 7 and 8 without any problems. Sounds like a bad download from Steam if anything.

Yeh, really. Especially since there doesn't seem to be a current EU3 demo available on steam.

Complete should still run on Win7/8 with no problems though - which incidentally is the available demo as far as I can tell from my store.

I might just buy it anyway as it is very cheap and see if it works or not. EDIT: The demo seems to be just for the first game, so is likely an older version. I'm rather sure that the full version would work for you or that the wonderful people in the tech support subsection would solve your problem. Just make sure to get EU3 Chronicles, which contains all the expansions (unlike EU3 "Complete").

I don't think you can use that subforum if you don't have a registered game. I could be wrong, though.

You would be correct - it requires either one of the EU3 games registered. Just see the ocean of "Please register and we'll help you with your game issue" postlocks from Andrew.

I had this problem too. What worked for me is to right click on the shortcut, go to properties, and check the box to run the program as administrator. Good luck.

Try going to the installation directory and click on eu3.exe instead of launching through steam. It sometimes gives the exact error message that way. I always have to copy/paste dx_something39.dll into the directory before the game will actually work.

Maybe the problem is that you're missing DirectX 9? I had to install it separately to get EU III to run on my Windows 7 machine.

More accurately, you need the DirectX update/extension which is not available through Windows Update. (It actually updates DirectX9 as well as 10 & 11 if you have them.)

Also if Steam is providing the EU3 1.0 demo, that will not work on video cards with no dedicated memory (i.e. Intel graphics). This was patched in the full game and is also fixed in the newer demo AndrewT linked to.

also due to the loadup time being slow, should point out that if you alt-tab on many machines, there's a chance it'll just freeze from that.. avoid alt-tabbing until after the menu has arrived
