Tried to get the achievement for uniting Japan, after finally annexing the last Daimyo I realized I have to be Shogun to do it. With a prestige of -40, that ain't easy. Why can't I be Shogun when there's no one else left? 
I love the new achievement system. I used to cheat sometimes but achievements force me play legit and now when I'm playing without cheats I'm on pretty good rank #27

If I understand you correctly you're the last Daiymo, but can't claim the title of Shogun because you don't have enough prestige and you need to be shogun in order to unite Japan?

What's the quickest/easiest way to do the England one? PU Scotland, Conquer Ireland, Retake cores and then vassalize through Europe?
I'm pondering whether to move the capital to the main land, become emperor, add myself as a member and then make sure I'm not elected again. This way England would get the -10% tech for being in the HRE.

Pretty much the issue here. Spy spam for cores has resulted in a very negative prestige, effectively preventing me from both Kampaku and Shogun. You'd think that when there are no other alternatives, they'd let me be Shogun anyway, but no.
I love how the achievements makes you play the game differently. Having some arbitrary goals or restraints really does makes the game more interesting. Most of my games have been based around some sort of crazy goal as an underdog nation, so I was happy to see that many of the achievements have this flavour to them. Just as an example - my first httt game was as Epirus where I fairly quickly managed to beat the ottomans and reform the Byzantine empire.
I'm actually finding it a bit "hard" to do the relatively easy achievements, just because of my mindset of taking advantage of the tiniest details. I actually played my first ever game as France this week. It's been ages since I've played a nation that was actually capable of anything straight off the bat. Around something like 1420 I started seriously considering if I should just gear up for a WC or stay with my initial plan of "just getting the France specific achievements quick and dirty".
Most people only skim the top of the potential of this game, and I really hope these achievements will give everyone the same joy in playing the game to its limits as I have. Just don't burn yourself out playing the first few years pausing every two seconds and changing military maintenance sliders on a monthly basis when playing someone as ridiculously powerful as France.

Whoa, African Power took me forever (mostly because the game got super slow) but I did it.
Kinda weird that random mid-ocean islands like Diego Garcia or Saint Helena are considered part of the African continent though.

Details? Did you have trouble with Europeans? What nation did you start as?
I am interested to know, in your opinion, what would be the easiest sub-saharan african nation to rule Africa?
I used Swahili, because I would have many Muslim friends and gold producing provinces around me.
I used Songhai because they start as a monarchy instead of tribal. Also, there is a Tripoli core on one of your starting provinces, meaning you can recruit Muslim troops, including cavalry. Played at Normal difficulty.
Fighting fellow Africans is ridiculously easy by the way. Battles last forever, so while half of your army is fighting the enemy army, you can just walk over their entire unfortified country with the rest.
So I united the West-African countries, took Colonial Ventures as my first idea and colonized the two provinces going through the Sahara, Tuat and something, around 1470. There I got a border with the Mamluks and Algiers. Befriended the first, conquered the latter, waited and westernized. After that it wasn't particularly difficult.
Built some naval bases to raise my naval force limit, so I could take some islands I needed from Great Britain. Got the achievement around 1700.

So you basically wait until 1500 to do anything? I'm tackling this at the moment. I've vassalized Pommerania and got a lucky white peace against Bohemia as emperor along with their ally Hungary. I'm having trouble progressing from this point though. The Hansa was recently excommunicated, but I can't seem to capture any of the provinces before Burgundy as the new emperor destroys me. My allies are Novgorod and a medium-sized Tver who OMNOMNOM'ed Muscowy.. oh and Poland, but they never wanna join a way since they're busy with the Golden Horde. Novgorod, Tver and my vassal Pommerania just isn't enough against emperor Burgundy.
Wow. I hadn't realized there was a monarchy down there. I'll have to give it a try some day.
I dont want to, but i am pointing it out, for the benefits of the devs.
I said that earlier, one of the reasons why I don't play with achievements anymore. Anyone could get any achievement so easily, so the competition is useless.
Why not play for the satisfaction of achieving them, rather than competition with other users?
