Just tried EU Rome with vae whatever you call it.

My god, it's an impressive game, with some good intuitive UI. If only Rome Total War had that level of Strategy (due to the super stack issue and empire total suck sucking harder than a 10 dollar hooker) my need for a strategy fix has lead me to boot up Rome Total War again via USD$3.39 Steam ^^

Anyways, my point is, why so little advertising for EU - Rome? it's a pretty good game, heck dare i say more fun than hoi3 in its current iteration. It's practically buried in the Paradox forums. :(

Also, why can't Hoi3 incorporate some of the great UI that is EU Rome?

Indeed, EU:3 has a lot of potential, but I believe that it needs another expansion to make it a true PI game.

BTW, this tread is in the wrong subforum: there is a Rome subforum here as well.

It's a great game, but had a horrible start. Vae Victus addressed most of the issues people had with Rome (except the most notable one, an expanded map), but by the time it came out most people had gone back to their favourite Paradox series (EU or HoI). It's really quite a shame since there's nothing wrong with R:VV per se, and if it had a larger (modding) community and got another expansion it could easily become one of Paradox' best games.

... but why did you post this on the Hoi3 forum?

Mh this is going to be moved to OT methinks...
Anyway, I'm a bit of a classical history buff so always checked out these games, didnt find EU:R that enthralling tbh (sorry PI!), the only thing that has truly kept my attention has been a mod:
http://www.europabarbarorum.com/
Info is there, truly excellent game so if you can get a copy of RTW I'd thoroughly recommend giving it a shot (they're also working on a sequel for Kingdoms).

I usually have periods of a week or two where I play it, then find my way back to EU3. It's a great game (the one that brought me to Paradox), but there's just not that many country options, and it gets monotonous after a while. The mods help with this somewhat, but there's only so much they can do.

I have just started playing the game again after having shelved it for a year or so, and I must say I am having fun. I remember when I played it when it was just out I was bored and disappointed quite fast, even with Vae Victis.
It seems in my year of absence of the game they have begun using some more of its vast potential, and now I really enjoy my Carthaginian game.

So now it is a pretty good game, but to be truly great I think another expansion would do the trick.
Unfortunately I don't think that is going to happen as the game has already gotten a bad reputation on the forums (as you can see from the first replies).

Maybe they should post an announcement;
"Hey guys, while you were playing other games, we have been steadily patching and improving EU Rome up to a point where we can say you should really give it another try, or miss out on something!"

^^

So far Warhammer Online or Age of Conan have not been able to convince me to return based on that kind statements. But of course it could be done with a sufficiently impressive feature list. As in: NOW WITH CK2. ;)

I don't know why people dislike Rome. With Vae Victis it's really fun, especially as republics when you have to work carefully to get your certain faction into power, so that you could do what you want do.

Maybe if this game started with at least part of the options that VV brought, it would be different situation. I'm fairly sure game would please somehow CK crowd - with all the character and dynasty play and keeping them happy, it can keep people busy for a while compared to very bland intial release.

Even then, Rome would fail seasoned players in many respects - its EU3 style combat system is not really engaging, which eliminates this game from a list of all would-be generals. Paradox games nowadays have not much of a value for die hard history fans either, as their design principle is too open - it grants that you almost never have to make historical decisions - you play your very own ahistorical antiquity, where wings of butterfly effect hit the world like a hurricane. That leaves would-be politicians and backstage meddlers - but then after a while feeling of novelty is gone and thanks to the small map/limited number of countries game offers limited replayability value.

VV did honest job to make Rome playable - it's now not just EU3-lite (smaller map, less countries, not so much to do), but sort of EU3/CK crossover with antiquity flavor. Core problems remained though - lack of breakthough events like colonization (long range one) and reformation in EU3, or even Mongols from CK, limited number of countries too choose (that come in 2 flavors - republican and royal), lack of fun international institutions like Papacy and HRE - and they limit long time fun with the game.

To be fair, I'm not even sure what would be needed for Rome to counter those issues. Whole world map with China, India and Americas would be fun for sure (and it should be hard, but not impossible to actually get there), as well as adding few extra centuries and great migrations resulting in real barbaric invasions. Basically - making it EU3 1.5k years earlier, instead of EU3-lite. On the other hand, for such game superdetailed character management would be a nightmare...

Rome is still young. Vae Victis made it more mature by making it centered om Interal politics (CK is cenetred on dynasties and dynasty-based nations, EU3 on external politics, Vicky on economy and HoI is centered on war). Anotehr expansion that deepens the internal politics factor would probably make it mature enough to be a great PI game.

I'd love to see another expansion for Rome. Hopefully one that expands the map. I'm not saying the whole world or anything, but push it east to the borders of India, at least. Make it possible to have more countries around. Make it more likely for barbarians to form new states, too. Maybe even form a new a tribe in an uncolonized province if the barbarian power gets strong enough.

Yeah, personally I found the determinism in in the earlier EU related games to be more annoying than anything. If I wanted to be railroaded along by history I could just go play one of the Age of Empires campaigns or something.
