Looks like one part Deus Vult, one part In Nomine, for ten bucks.

I'd counted myself as skeptical that Pdox could salvage a game worthy of the Europa Universalis name out of Rome, but this could go a long way toward dispelling my disbelief.

What on earth are you talking about? As if people aren't allowed to complain that a once fantastic games company now expects its customers to buy a game and two expansions in order to get just the one quality game?

It's the same with IN, a game widely lauded as superb and what "EU3 should have been" - an yet it's what, the 2nd, 3rd expansion? It's disgraceful behaviour. An expansion should add new gameplay, new features, not just make the existing game more playable and enjoyable.

So IN and NA don't add new features? WTF? The purpose of an expansion is to make a game more enjoyable and playable by adding new few features. Which is what NA and IN do. EU3 1.3 is a perfectly complete game. EU3-NA-IN is a more entertaining comeplete game, but then, that should be expected.

Please, find me a patch on the scale of NA or IN, or stop posting this 'Paradox makes you pay for a patch!!!' crap.

I can find a hundred patches out there that add new features, not many expansions that come in at 20mb however. Nor many games where in order to buy what many admit is the first quality version of EU3, IN (which entirely undermines the idea that is an expansion, rather than a refined version of the original) I would have to buy said sub-standard original and TWO expansions. Is that value for money?

Well, I actually tend to be in the crowd that believes that "Rome" has been a bit of a yawner -- it's a good game and all, but it doesn't hold my attention the way that EU and EU2 did. In fact, EU III was a bit of a yawner too until IN came out... IN actually turned EU III from a mediocre game into one of the finest games ever made. Let's hope that Vae Victis will do for Rome what In Nomine did for EU 3.

First quality version? EU3 is a good game even without expansions. You don't need NA or IN to enjoy the game. Both expansions added a lot to a game, but it's not mandatory to buy those expansions to be able to enjoy the game.

And to be honest I haven't seen many strategy games about Roman era which realisticly simulate senate.

If you don't like idea of Vae Victis or other Paradox expansions, then don't buy it. Nothing prevents you playing the game without buying the expansion.

The reason this is so funny is that you and your kind never seem to realise that the average PI game is actually only 20mb (when you discount music and graphics) so you are in fact getting an entire new game for the price of an expansion.

And at the same time you (your kind I mean) seem to be the sole judge of what should have been in the game from the start even though you are not employed by PI or found worthy of being in the beta crew.

With this in mind you should be able to understand why your opinion is being discarded by the rest of us.

Paradox expansions are small because the games aren't graphics-heavy. Usually they replace the .exe, add a handful of new graphics and some new text files. In terms of content it's not too bad. However, I can see why someone would be hacked off, put it that way.

The actual game works well, no real bugs and everything works as it was intended to. So, all in all, no need for a patch, as nothing needs to be fixed (except the recent auto-close window bug).

Now, Vae Victis will add many other things to do, so it will "expand" your gaming experience. You don't need it to play EU:R, but you might want it nonetheless (like me).

What makes me pissed off, is when a company releases a game that needs a patch to be completed (NWN2 anyone?). It like they're telling us: "Look, we didn't take the time to finish the game before selling it to you, because we don't care about our customers and we're laughing at them."

Maybe EU:R is not what you expected it to be. Then, there is nothing anyone can do (except modding it the way you want). But you cannot say the game is incomplete or needs to be patched, since you can play from the beginning to the end without major issue. You want the expansion? Buy it! You don't want it? Don't buy it! It's as simple as that.

Republic of Rome is a game I really really want to try, but the clerk at the store that sells most of RPG and board games in my city told me RoR was probably discontinued now! :(

If Vae Victis can bring a game experience as close as my idea of RoR, I'll be in heaven (or in hell!)

Nice - it will be like good old Avalon Hill's RoR - without the tedium of the rulebook :)

In Republic of Rome you "were" a faction at the Senate, and had to cooperate to prevent is crumble as well as conspiring against other factions. I don't see how this EU:R can be like it even with the expansion.

Firstly, I would like to say I resent the attitude you are taking - it's remarkably childish and fairly offensive. Most people resent being referred to as "your kind". This is a forum for paradox customers and I have as much right to express my opinions as you do. You have no special powers and no special position, and attempting to belittle my views only makes you look foolish and self-important. I've been buying and playing paradox games for seven years, so I would like to think my views are at least tolerated by the powers that be at PI. Whether you, crappman, like them or not is, I suspect, of very, very little importance.

Nevertheless, how you can possibly claim you are getting "an entire new game" is entirely beyond me. The primary feature of the expansion is the introduction of a Senate complete with factions and character agendas (and the tribal equivalent for other countries) - fantastic, that will improve the game a great deal. However, why should we have to pay £10 for an expansion that includes the Senate in a game set during the Roman republic? Adding "personal goals and agendas" - what was the point of the character system then - was it no deeper than just assigning random featureless people to positions based purely on three numbers?

I have no doubt once paradox have released an expansion or two that Rome will be a superb game. But I reject the idea that because these expansions improve the game that makes them good value. When other companies offer expansions they give new worlds, graphic overhauls, brand new features. What paradox are doing here - offering an expansion that introduces the Senate - is the equivalent of the Football Manager team offering an expansion that included the Champions League, or the transfer market.

Speaking of music. Why the hell isn't the game music avaliable for download in wav (or if not mp3 320)? I really liked it and it seems I'll only ever be able to hear these brilliant compositions in a very lossy format :(

Who cares about what size it is. 20 megabytes is still 20 million bytes. Would you rather thats taken up by some guy drawing few lines in photoshop or by paradox painstakingly coding parts of the eu code in binary so the game runs a ton faster (compare its speed to total war). I think I know which one I'd prefer. Just because the game doesn't have giant textures doesn't make it any less valid.

Would you care to mention these companies? Most expansions I heard of feature 4 new units and a handful of lame pre-made missions. And they'll charge you a good twenty bucks for it.

Nobby, dont worry, you are not alone!

I also feel somewhat indignated by this type of policy paradox has been doing with EU3 and now with Rome. I wish they would hear our opinions, but i supose that as any other company they care more about profits.
