As a warm up for the release of EU IV I have been returning to EU 3 DW the last couple of weeks. I have created a large empire out of Scandinavia with lots of oversea colonies, as well as substantial land gains in continental Europe. To make it easier for me I would like to have the option in EU4 to create new vassal states out of my colonies and not just recreating older no longer existing nations with borders fixed by history. Using an interface like the one we have in EU3 when making a peace offer would be very handy creating new nations with control over exactly what you are giving away and also what they are supposed to be called. :)

I'd like to define the government type of a vassal before releasing it, so as a Catholic power I can have bishoprics vassals, or establish a merchant republic under me.

In the past I've hardly ever released vassals, but I suspect in the EU4 world that will change, and I'll want this level of flexability. I'd also like the ability to give land to vassals after their creation.

Because vassals will have their own monarch they will get their own monarch points, and so vassalised areas will have their own pool of points to spend on cores and buildings and such.

I agree with that idea, so it's in the player hands the difference between building a quasi-federated empire or simply a state-on-paper ready to dissolve at the first crisis. Many time I found myself at the head of an unwanted unmanageable blob only because i could not release a proper, strong, culturally united vassal.

Yeah, this is highly annoying. Sometimes I don't want to rule Estonia, I just want to have it as my vassal bros. :(

Currently I am playing a game of EU3 with Romania and have found that for Eastern European countries it can be a nice asset to have a good number of vassals beneath you. For example, my vassals own around 0.8x the amount of territories I own right now, and it has allowed my own faction to become a strong technological power, as I hold the highest land tech in the world, and due to an empowered economy (using OPM vassals to power up a nice neighbour bonus for tech and bigger ones to supply a good strong economy so I can improve my own) I do realise the frustration that it causes. I personally release the vassal and go into the save game editor tool for EU3 to do it, but it would be nice to have a 'slider system' to control how centralised you want a vassal to be, and how they should act in a war, whether they should defend you, their territories or go on the offensive etc. You should also be able to give them certain liberties diplomatically, such as revoking or giving them the right to marry other nations etc, allowing you to form semi-dependencies.

I have previously suggested similar systems, such as having different vassal types and having a seperate panel for vassals.

yes ive often found it odd and frustrating that you cant allow your vassal to act of its accord in matters dictated by you. there are circumstance when creating a drooling retard that cant even look over the hill unless its master calls it war is extremely illogical and unrealistic. Please oh please paradox allow some degree of control over our vassals beside Call to arms and annexation.

Another reason this is silly is because we already have an example of loose vassalage within the game the HRE in which the emperor is leige lord to the member states and yet they have a high degree of free will with in the empire why then cant my vassasl that have been amalgamated into a mini french HRE also enjoy the same benefits (not the hre bonus of course though it would be cool to form your own HRE equivalent).

I like this, too, because it's not like when they created satellites monarchs said, for example, "Oh, Sardinia has a historical claim to Nice? Better give it back, since the other powers don't think it's ours!"

It should be said, that it is important to make vassals truly unruly.

The first thing vassal player nation does, is usually severing the vassal ties. So vassals shouldn't be simply 100% reliable allies, acting as border guarg, micro manager reducer and tax payer. Mainly they should be little bastards who will stab you in the back as soon as the opportunity arises.

How many nations did realy want to stay vassal historicaly? Don't make me fight Wallachia armies even when I control entire Anatolia + Thrace anymore.

I think it should be tied to ruler personality. That way it's not predictable. So you could find yourself with a good vassal ally or betrayal. It does bother me in EU III that vassals rarely break free.

It should really depend on the vassal vs overlord relationship and strength. A OPM in the center of my HRE Kingdom should be quite loyal, even if the ruler hates my guts, while say, Scotland is a vassal of England, the two have reasonably close strengths, so when France starts fighting the Scots make a break for independance...

Wait, that last bit almost sounded like current affairs in Scotland today!
