EU IV says Steam is not running

Ever since installing patch 1.7.3 I get a message saying that Steam is not running and that my game might not work properly because of that. Why do I get this message and how do I fix it?

I play on Mac and Steam is running.

I play on Mac too and do not get this message, even if Steam is in fact not running and I manually execute eu4.app . In fact I've never seen or heard of it before and googling that message gets no hits.

Is it just EU4 that triggers this? CK2, any other game? What if you do in fact exit Steam and run EU4.app , do you still get it?

I get the exact message if I exit Steam and run the EU.app outside of Steam. I have not noticed my game malfunctioning though. I don't own CK2 so I can't test if I get that message there, too.

I just tested disabling mods and the message won't pop up though after disabling Veritas et Fortitudo mod. I think I have to report this problem in the VeF subforum..

I'm a same bug. I manually execute eu4.app but Steam is offline mode => same alert. But when i close this message, i can play.
But get this message each time is tiring and i do not want to play with steam in online mode

The VeF team did not reply to my bug report so maybe this is a vanilla issue when someone plays with mods?

Not quite sure what you are saying here - by definition vanilla is when played with no mods ...

I got the same message with OS X 10.9.4 and EU4 1.7.3
Doesn't appear when i run CK2 2.1.6

By default I run the games directly and don't use steam (only for buying DLC's and updates)

No. I've Windows 7 64 bits and I play with a mod, Panthéon. But bug exist without mod.
When steam active online, no bug.

Sorry Andrew. I meant so say that the issue is caused by vanilla and not by a specific mod like VeF. Elryck runs a different mod than me and has the some error message. Prior to patch 1.7.3 this error message never appeared. You can said you found no hits on Google. So isn't it likely that the new patch introduced this issue?

It certainly looks like the message was introduced in 1.7.3 . So far some people get it whether Steam is running or not, others only when Steam is not running, and I don't get it in either case.

I prefer to play without Steam running.

I use Windows 7 and I also get this message since the latest patch, without any mod. At first I did not pay much attention because Paradox always told us that their games could be played without Steam running. This is why I finally left Gamersgate for Steam, to get EUIV and CKII 2.x.

After a few sessions and some decades in-game, it became obvious that the game was, indeed, not working properly. The AI was not building troops or ships anymore, at all. It was using its original troops from before the bug and everything else seemed to be working correctly, but it was not building new ones, resulting, for instance, in France being overrun by a 6k Breton and a 10k Burgundian armies.

When I finally resolved to launch the game through Steam, the message did not appear and all countries miraculously started to build armies and navies like crazy, they probably had hoarded a lot of money during the bug. In the end, it has somewhat ruined a good game which now feels like cheated.

Bumping this, as I would really like to be able to play without Steam running, like I was promised. A bit surprised that there are not more complaints about this, must mean that most people usually launch through Steam and have not even been aware of the issue.

That is right, I'd say 99% of people just use steam, seeing no reason not to. And of the 1%, most probably don't notice the inactive AI.

Anyway, I've just now received clearance to say that Paradox (well, Wiz really) have fixed the recruiting/building AI so that it works the same whether Steam is present or not. You may well still get that message on startup, they haven't told me either way.

I do not know, sorry. Of course we have Gamescon this next week, so I'm pretty sure it won't be then.

Steam is down again. The fact that we cannot play a single-player game when Steam is down is disturbing to say the least.
