I wonder why we only can directly control 5 planets (later maybe 1 or 2 more through techs).
because i loved scrolling thorugh all my provinces in euIV and finetune my empire.
would love to do the same in stellaris.
right now its just like build colony ships to increase your ressources or energy (depending on what u focus your sectors) and building your fleet in 1 of your 5 core worlds. wich feels kinda sad, dosnt it?
would love to manage all my 30 planets if i so choose.

Basically because without the caps on home worlds and sectors it would be suboptimal play to ever use them, and since the game is designed around larger nations having sectors it would just turn out very weird. I for one love properly executed automation, which I consider sectors to be, and I'd hate feeling forced to not use them.

From watching the stream, managing a planet is much more of a hassle than managing a province. In EU4 a province has resource and base tax and you can build a variety of buildings and upgrade those, you can culture-convert it, religion-convert, recruit soldiers, build ships, manage autonomy and unrest and that's about it. In Stellaris, a planet is a bunch of tiles, probably 16 on average, but sometimes 25, some of which could have various blockers, each has various resources, each could have a pop which could each have a different ethos and other factors and you can building and upgrade a building on each tile, manage food and happiness on a planet, resettle/purge/enslave individual pops, build/upgrade a spaceport and upgrade that, build ships, recruit armies.
In short, a planet has a lot of tiles, and those need managing, and managing a dozen tiles per dozens of planets is way too much work to be fun for most people.

If I recall correctly there is a government type that allows you to have another +4 core planets, which gets you halfway to your goal. There are probably additional techs you can research to expand this limit further.

The limit itself is also a soft-cap, so you can probably go a little beyond it if you wish, with some minor penalties.

With that said, planet management looks a bit involved, so I wouldn't personally wish for 20 until I've tried managing 9 and felt that it wasn't enough.

Well, nobody will blame you because you like micromanaging. But I think that Sectors add interesting gameplay - more than if you were just managing all your planets. It's also more immersive.

Don't do it, though. It's shit. Sectors are where your planets should be.
