I think imperialism is perhaps the most similar game to EU I or II on the market. Granted, it is much older and very much smaller in size and scope of gameplay, but the basic concept is there. Imperialism focused much more heavily on economics, to the detriment of war and diplomacy in my opinion.

I would like to see some of the concentration on economy in an EU III. Individual control on trade items, multiple items per province, and a more dynamic market to drive the prices.

I realize that to some, this would seem to be just extra work, but it is something that can easily be automated. And for those of us who want as much control as possible, well this would just add a whole new dimension.

I would like to hear form people who have also played imperialism on this matter.

i played imperialism a good deal and still do from time to time.
an eu3 should allow for building an economic powerhouse or at least playing a more economical game. though ability to set to automatic is needed for this sort of game.

I would have to agree. I never heard of Imperialism until I saw Imperialism 2 came out. I didn't like the sequal but the first game was awesome. Even though I was playing it in 2000 it was better than almost any new game at that time.

Yes the best part was the economics of the game but it was based on the industrial revolution. I'm not really sure how that can be brought to EU. The only resources you would need is lumber and muskets. If your gonna add any other resources you would have to redo the entire trade (COT's) sytem of the game due to the resources going to you to deal with instead of them going to the COT's.

I can see redo-ing the trade system so that you control where and when products get shipped out. This would allow you to trade with a certain country, but perhaps not trade iron with them, to stockpile it for yourself, or prevent your neighbors from building up armies.

Also something like stockpiles of resources could be used by the player to manipulate the markets to his advantage. There would obviously be some risks involved, such as the market dropping before the sale, or possibly of them being looted in a war. this could be a new option for war settlment. After WWI Germany had to ship a certain amount of coal to france and the allies, perhpas this could be adapted for EU III,

" Venice demands 200d, 10 tonnes of iron, and 100 units of cloth"

As a base: each province should have some demands (on goods) you have to satisfy. The goods you have over it goes to warehouse and you can manage its further usage.
But that will turn EU to central planned market as in CCCP?

Except for the fact that Imperialism's AI is weak so it has to cheat like a pirate. :)

EU has some ai modifications but the "cheating" is noting compared to Imperalism.

Still, I rather enjoyed Imperialism.

In that case, two new resources need to be incorporated in the game: concrete and barbed wire... ;) To be serious, I would like to see some planned economies in computer games. :D

I think the demand for goods like this would somehow have to be factored into a 'happyness' part of the BB rating, (Or stab costs, or something), because I mean, someone could manipulate the AI by trading worthless goods that would otherwise have no real affect (Like cloth, spices, ect.), and just trade all of that away to get huge stockpiles of food, guns, and wood.

Loved Imperialism. Mostly for the time period which is why I never played the sequal (wasn't really interested in gaming the EU period until I saw EU). It did need a scenario+map editor though. I did lots of hacking of those and the exe file (changing unit costs) so I could edit scenarios but never had time to write a real editor, just a 'compiler' for the scenario files. One thing I always wanted in Imp. was more flexibility in trading like the ability to choose your sales just like you choose your buys.

I hope Paradox does a game in that time period (perhaps based on the work the AoN people are doing). The resource management of Imp. would be a good addition to EU3 or an AoN game (or HoI if it doesn't have it already).

I loved Imp 1 and 2 but it is a different game. The number of nations and Provinces in EU2 is much larger than Imp. plus Imp was turn based vs EU2 real time.
In short the Imp. econ. model would not work with EU2.

Imperialism was ncie yes, but it had alot of flaws. The economic aspect of it was good though yes. I always liked stock piling resources. It actually made you go to war over resources, oil comes to mind later in the game. EU2 or an EU3 you would think would have been the same. I mean if you're producing most of the world's grain you should have some say on the price of it. Not to mention if the computer's gonna field massive armies the price of grain should skyrocket. If large armies of men are being conscripted than yeah Iron and copper/furs/ whatever should be in high demand than to. Mergining Imperialism's economy market with EU's gameplay I would think would make a killing machine, if it's possible.

I loved both Imperialism I and II.

I don't think that the trade system could be added to EU, but I would like to see some form of the resource system that was used in Imperialism II.

i don't like to see the trade system of Imperialism in EU.
It was good for Imp. but i don't think it will be good in EU.

Also, if you are going to give option of micromanage the trade system and the resources of every city and also give cities a list of resources and not one like it is now, you will also have to add some level of abstraction to this, because, imagine playing the Ottoman Empire, yu can easilly conquer a lot of provinces, but try to micromanage them, it will be a total mess....
So you can add, maybe like Civ games, governors that takes the every day decisions...
Also this game is in real time, so playing an MP campaign, and trying to micromanage your provinces and trying to do something could be a REAL mess too....

So i think that, yes, it will be good to micromanage everything, but it will introduce some BIG flaws, and i do not want to remove any of the features of this GREAT game, i will want to have the same + MORE.
I do not want micromanagement instead of the MP campaign or Real Time for example.

I loved Imperialism I also. Past tense, though --- after I went to Win98 I was naver able to run the program again. It bombs before the opening movie plays. Anyone else have this problem? (Imp II ran fine for me).

But I don't think it would make sense to put things like the trade system into an EU game. The Imperialism games are about economics (resources, production transportation lines), and the EU system just isn't.

Ditto on the Win98 thing - although on my laptop (also Win98) it works just fine. Imperialism is a great game despire the AI cheats and the D-Day cheat. But there is no way that sort of economic system could work in EU - it would be too much of a burden. Imperialism is about economic development - armies and diplomacy take a back seat. And they must or you'd have an incredibly unweildy game
