I'm curious whether EU 4 under the Clausewitz engine will have multi core support? I have a great laptop, but the cpu is intel i5 2nd gen - which has been the bottleneck for V2 so far.

which has been the bottleneck for V2 so far.
My understanding was that new PDS games and expansions released after Divine Wind have multi-core support (i.e. CK2, TFH, and AHD) so I would safely assume EU4 will. (Maybe some support in Sengoku and FtM as well.)

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...re-support&p=15069496&viewfull=1#post15069496
Yes it [MotE] supports multi-core processors.
HOI3 and V2 with the latest expansions also benefit from multi-core.

From the "EU4 facts" sticky thread:
-The game is planned to have multi-core support.

Multicore isn't just something you do - It's not "all in or all out". It's not like you magically flip a switch and all X cores of your processor are suddenly used equally for your software. (Sadly, heh)

Hold up... you're saying perfectly load balanced parallelism in a non-scientific application isn't magic?? It is near mythical...

I tried opening HOI3 and EU3 to show a before-and-after comparison with EU4, and was confused when they showed similar quantities of threads. Then I saw that jdrou said above that PDS added proper multi-threading in later expansions to those games, which I have (TFH and DW respectively.)

Great job PDS making that fairly significant change not just for new games but also in expansions! Very commendable :)

you can get more cores as you like by spending admin power, or diploannex a vassal :)

And EU3 has way more threads just because it's been around so long.

Good thing I'm not the only one who thought this threat was about in game Core's and not processor cores he he

Felt rather stupid after reading the OP question... or I just play too much paradox games.

Why are people talking about threads and cores like they're the same thing?

Because it's layman's terms. To the average non-techy, this is just "multi-core" cos he knows he's got two or four cores, and he knows the older games didn't "make use of them" and now "they do" :)

In more technical terms (as I'm sure you know but many others probably don't): You don't develop software for "multi-core", you develop multi-threaded software which is thus able to better utilise the multiple processor cores of your system, because the OS is able to spread those threads across multiple CPU cores, executing more than one in parallel. It can and does do this similarly with multiple processes, but it would be rare for a game or application to split itself across processes rather than multiple threads within a process; not unheard of, though - that's how Google Chrome does it.

And then there's processors with Hyper Threading, which can theoretically execute more simultaneous threads than there are actual cores, and so further benefit from increased threading.

Of course a pure thread count, as I showed in the screenshot, doesn't tell us the whole story. It could still be the case that although the game launches 25 threads, 24 of them are for UI or peripheral stuff and there's still a big fat "do everything" thread that's therefore not parallelised at all. But we'll assume that that's not the case in EU4 :)

Ah! I used the crude system of opening Windows Task Manager, and looking at the Threads column:

hOg0QzM.png

As I've just said in post above ^^ this is not by any means a good measure of whether it's actually properly parallelised. It could spawn a bunch of threads for peripheral things and then still do the bulk of processing in a single one.

I just assumed (and you know what they say about 'assume', etc!) that because the thread count was similar to EU4, and we know EU4 is properly parallelised, that EU3-DW was as well! Could be totally wrong.

One way to check would be to get per-thread processing statistics (can't recall if Windows does that; I do it all the time in UNIX/Linux.) Or, simpler, set the game running at speed 5 and check the CPU usage across multiple cores

But I certainly don't care enough to do any further checking :)

PS. Jeez!! I'd forgotten how crap EU3 looks in comparison to EU4 :D It's funny how things seem fine until a much better version comes along :)

TheBloke said:

I think what gris was meaning is that threads and cores and parallelism are distinct ideas and have to be discussed as such. Multiple threads do not even have to even run on multiple cores. In the worst case, they could even be designed to run entirely sequentially, totally dependent on waiting for one action from another to complete and say "go" ... You pointed this out yourself, actually.

Rather than looking at the number of threads: A decent quick-and-dirty way to see how well your currently running processes are using multiple cores with Task Manager is to look at the CPU Usage history graphs as they're broken down by processors (though Windows does duplicate hyperthreading processors as if they were true CPUs). You don't get a breakdown by particular process, but if the only demanding foreground process you're running is EU, it's a reasonable indicator. Obviously not a robust way to figure this out, but I think this is sufficient here.

I know this was gravedigged but I have the same question. I run EU IV on my dual Xeon E5620 (16 threads) gaming computer and I watched it, appears to only use 2 cores... is this correct? I mean I doubt it needs more (battlefield 3 uses 4 iirc)
