What are your advices about playing Ethiopia ?

Any ideas would be helpfull. :(

Having annexed Italy with Ethiopia I can say a few things.

1) It is EXTREMELY difficult. Expect several reloads and restarts. Don't overwrite a save game unless it's safe. You make a small blunder with e.g. UK and it's annoying. You make the slightest mistake with Ethiopia and you are dead.

2) You need military access to the UK. Place a unit in Khartoum to move into Asmara and have one on standby in Harar to sweep through Barbera into Oppia. Units are _not_ supplied in Barbera.

3) Your 4 excess IC should all go into producing militia until you have enough. When you think you have enough you need one more. After that supplies. Just supplies.

4) You'll more or less find you have a unit in redeploy at all times. You really need to use that to the max and insert in "hot spots" as needed.

5) Make sure you use defensive leaders and try to make them field marshalls. That extra 10% eff. for defense and 15% for HQ will be sorely needed. This is a tip-toe dance as you also need as much skill as you can muster. Haillie Selassie will most likely be skill 6 or 7 when it's over.

6) Don't take Asmara unless you want to face the entire Italian army. You can face the entire Italian army only with 80% of your armed forces (should be ~13 units). Once you have gained military access through countries all the way to Italy they seem to go into "all or nothing" overload and will throw their last garrison units at Asmara. You can now waltz up to Italy and claim it (way require suicide in Libya and luck on the Messina.)

7) It is possible (but difficult) to join Comintern. They don't seem to do much (anything) for you. They declare war on Italy of course, but doesn't seem to care much for your defense.

Like I said it requires a million of things happening in your favour. Don't expect to do it every time. Or every tenth time for that matter.

Thank you very much, maddog !

It is difficult to get mil. access from UK ?

Not really. The worst to gain access from is actually Turkey in my experience (when you get that far). The UK should give it on first attempt. Otherwise I recommend a reload, because you are going to suffer a swift death.

Here's some images for the heck of it.

eth_strat.jpg

This is after the deed. The blue arrows illustrate the Ethiopian line of advance and the yellow indicate Italian movement. The blue boxes where defence is held at all costs and the line illustrate resistence to give the Khartoum unit enough time to reach Asmara. After this a few (2-3) units can easily take care of the surrounded forces in Mogadishu and Makele. Everything else without exception must _immidiately_ move to Asmara.

This is extremely tedious and annoying. I bet you'll be wondering why you tried to play such a pitiful nation at all. Then you get this message and feel tremendously proud.

The reason I play this small nation is that they are ortodox, and so am I, as I am from Romania, and the second is that when playing a small country is giving more satisfaction when you win.

Good luck to you. Ethiopia is IIRC the legendary christian kingdom of Prester John. Also they are one of only three independent African nations of this era. South Africa is white mans world and Liberia is a gift from (guilt-ridden) USA to slaves who wished to return to Africa during the Monroe administration (1876 IIRC). Hence the name of the capital - Monrovia. Ups. Off-topic.

To continue the off topic just a touch due to a couple inaccuracies, Monroe's administration was from 1817-1825. Also, Liberia was not a gift from the USA at all. In fact, the government wasn't involved in its formation (though it would support the nation during and after the US Civil War). The area was settled with freed blacks in 1816 by the American Colonization Society which at the time was far more interested in deporting freed slaves than any real abolition. The thought of some at the time was that white and black could not live together in peace so that returning the freed slaves to Africa was the way to solve the problem.

Just some historical perspective on Liberia since you brought it up. :)

Oh well, I live to learn. Thank you for the information - it's most useful. I did put in a few IIRCs so I presume any reader would be aware that this is not something I am (was) completely certain off. The government of USA is a bit alien to a European so you will have to excuse that I confused an NGO with the actual administration - an NGO based on convience and not human rights as I thought. I'll live in the illusion that I was not far off.

No problem at all, Maddog. Trust me, I don't assume Europeans know some of the finer details of US history (much like I don't know fine points of say Danish history). I just wanted to put it out there for those interested in the historical aspect. I live to learn as well and I learn so many things on these boards so I like to give a little back. :)

Very strange !

I was having 4 DP and ask UK for mil. access, got refused.
Wait 1 month, same result. Another 4 months to have 2 DP, same result.

What is the catch ? What I am doing wrong ?

Probably nothing. You are just being unlucky. Try again and hope for better weather in London. (You may have to restart the game. Time is also of the essense)

Does this actually affect it or are you just kidding?

I was just kidding. Sort of "if the weather is better in London old Neville might be in a better mood". I should have know better than using a game term that might be misinterpretted. My pardons.
