The news event in Hearts of Iron 4 are only there for flavor, with the Hindenburg Disaster and Amelia Earheart meant to give you a better look into the world of that day. In my opinion, nothing is more immersive than explaining the world stage affairs after the succesful Italian invasion of Ethiopia. And this can be easily done with an event.

This small but informative event gives context about the the League of Nations and why didn't UK and France opposse an Italian invasion, in fact UK even allowed the Italians passing through the Suez Channel. As well as the chilling and prophetic words of Haile Selassie "It is us today, it will be you tomorrow.", 3 years before World War II. This invasion inspired Hitler to anschluss Austria and invade Cezchoslovakia because he thought the allies would not intervene to avoid war at all costs, as they didn't intervene in Ethiopia, he was right.

This is how the event could look like:

Triggerers:

- End of Italian-Ethiopian War with Italian victory.
- Was has ended before 1st of January 1937.
- Ethiopia is Non-Aligned and Italy is Fascist.

Description:
Ethiopia was one of the few states to survive the scramble for Africa by the major European powers in the late 19th century. Both Italy and Ethiopia were members of the League of Nations, founded in 1920. However, after a border clash in 1934, Mussolini claimed that Italy was wronged and demanded satisfaction. Ethiopia appealed to the League of Nations for arbitration. But the League's response was sluggish at best. It was then when Emperor Haile Selassie, complained to the League of Nations, calling on the League of Nations to invoke its doctrine of collective security. An attack on one member of the League of Nations is supposed to be regarded as an attack on all members.

What was not foreseen however, was Hitler's rise to power in Germany. Britain and France still hope to contain Hitler and thinks that Mussolini's Italy could still serve as a bulwark against German ambitions in Austria, and thus don't want alienate Mussolini over what they considered an unimportant African state. The League of Nations responded by condemning the invasion and imposing economic sanctions on Italy. However the sanctions we not only weak, but were not taken seriously, especially by Britain and France. The weakness of the League thus exposed, Ethiopia was left alone.

In the aftermath of the invasion, Emperor Haile Selassie addressed one last time to the League of Nations, during his final speech he asked, "What answer shall I take back to my people?" warning further that, "It is us today, it will be you tomorrow".

Democratic reaction: "What a bunch of nonsense."
Non-aligned reaction: "When interests colide, it's back to each to their own."
Communist reaction: "It was foolish to trust the imperialists to protect you."
Fascist reaction: "Only weaklings cry out for protection from others."

Maybe I'm mis-remembering but I'm sure I've seen a news popup with the line "It is us today, it will be you tomorrow."

Sorry don't know how to check the scripts to check if I'm right. I was playing either UK or USA at the time (and thus speeding through at speed 5 and not paying full attention)

Unfortunately the situation regarding Ethiopia was a no-win one. Either they react very strongly and declare war on Italy (which was never going to happen, just like it wouldn't happen today) and lead to the violent deaths of potentially hundreds of thousands of young men, or they do nothing and let Mussolini get away with it. Their decision to impose minor sanctions was arguably even worse than either of these two courses, though, because it simply angered Mussolini and pushed him into the orbit of Hitler and Nazi Germany, who he used to be opposed to as recently as 1934. Fortunately Ethiopia was the first country to be liberated during the coming war, though, so their time suffering under Italian rule was relatively short.
