Hi all. I've only started playing Eu3 recently but in my attempt to play as Ethiopia I've had some trouble with rebels. In almost every battle with them they'll massacre my African spearmen troops, despite I having the advantage in land modifiers; dice rolls and general. In my last battle four peasant groups rose up and my seven thousand strong army lost six thousand men to the few hundred peasants.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong, but I havn't a clue what. Any ideas?

Pause during the battle and move your cursor over one of the enemy unit icons ( and [X] in the battle setup screen) to check the enemy unit model.

I suspect that REB could use latin tech levels, so fighting with LT 1 spearmen vs. LT 7 men-at-arms would be painful...

My military maintenance is full and my version is EU3 gold with HTTT. Both sides are level 1 African spearmen. I think it may be a case of crappy dice rolls and armies without a general whom I missed.

On a side note, is there a way of circumventing large armies of rebels who constantly rout whenever fought and, as a result, rampage around your fortless land ruining your prestige whenever you try to kill them?

Thanks.

Meh. :( I don't know what's wrong, then (except I had the same problem playing as the Incas). One problem is that Ethiopia is mountainous and the rebels are always defending, so they get a terrain benefit to their die rolls, which is why their dice seem lucky.

No way of circumventing the loss of prestige to rebels that I know of.

EDIT: There was talk of a patch today - I don't know if it's still on. If it is, it might effect Ethiopia's form of tribal government. I hope.

Your going to have a tough learning curve if your playing your first game as Ethiopia. I think you are in the African Tech Group so it will be more expensive to research things. Your lands are fort-less which leaves you open to invasion or rebels. The armies of the Swahili, Maupta, Adal, and Mamelukes, tend to be large and even if you win a battle, the armies will retreat to another one of your fort-less territories. Gets kind of frustrating:( If you are new to EU3 you might want to play a European Nation to start with just until you better understand the basic concepts.

I've noticed a similar issue when playing as Kongo. An army of 2000 rebels takes about 7 months of ping-ponging to be defeated by a 7000-strong army led by a decent general, with no terrain bonuses on either side, and attacking natives is really tricky- a 2500 strong force in Gabon defeated that same 7000-man army. I had to retreat from battle numerous times just to be able to take out the natives in the province.

It is actually WAD, but that doesn't make it right. Rebels use the latin tech group, so their troops are actually better than yours. They need to make it like the pirates that only spawn based on the owner's tech group, not latin alone.

However, you will indeed have a very tough time with Ethiopia as your first game. I'd recommend France or Castille to get a handle on the mechanics of the game, then going back to Ethiopia with your new knowledge.

Ethiopia's still fortless in HttT? Why?

Myself I'd recommend a European minor to start with, as opposed to France or Castille. Always found it easier to learn the basic concepts with only a small entity to control. Besides, it may be harder, but it is more fun. For me at least :D

One problem is that... ...the rebels are always defending,

Why would the rebels always be defending? He has a general with a better manuever rating, so he should beat them to the next province and be the defender in the next battle. If he's not getting there ahead of them, that's a bug of some sort.

Paradox already said that the African and New World tribes aren't working like intended. It was inferred that it will be fixed in the next patch, because at the moment the lack of forts combined with poor combat modifiers makes killing the constantly spawned rebels almost impossible to handle.

Other than because Paradox hates natives? :D

And apparently my dream of playing as Byzantium and vassalizing Ethiopia.

The combination of a lack of forts and pagan territories nearby is a disaster that I'm 90% has been discussed before.
