That must hurt alot:D

Calling bankruptcy so rapidly must be a hard blow. Besides, not knowing what is happening in your backyard or who is almost about to eat you alive it must be tough.

Let's just hope Menas I has a little bit more of luck and finds the way to get money, i also hope you get some kind of leader with vision, hopefully a madman with tons of luck and charm.

KING MENAS I 1560-1563 THE LAZY KING

King Menas was a man of little wisdom, he came to the throne a punk and left the throne a punk. While rumors of massive wars came from europe (england dow spain) (france dow spain) and petty wars were fought to no decision in arabia. King Menas cared not for anything but the simple pleasures in life and he died while choking on a hambbone :D in late 1563

KING SARSA DENGEL 1564-1596 THE COURAGEOUS WARRIOR KING

Sarsa was so sick of what his brother had done on the throne that he changed the budget to fill the treasury coffers (treasury 10d). He was in all aspect preparing for war from the start. King Sarsa was an able general (4-1-3-0) and in June 1564 he invaded Nubia however to his dismay, Turkey joined against him.

Though at one point in 1565, Sarsa with 25000men defeated a force of 24000turks. Still he was outgunned and lost half his army in one year. (from 56,000 to 25,000) thinking he was going to glorify god and Ethiopia he kept on fighting the war with no money in the treasury. Finally however in another defeat in Keren and with Axum under siege by turkey, Nubia offered peace and he took it paying to nubia 26ducats, or all the money he had.

With this humiliating first defeat he vowed revenge on Nubia and they laughed in his face. So in 1566 Sarsa joined Portugal in their fight against Spain. That war was nothing really and Ethiopia saw no combat. Sarsa was hell bent on taking over the muslims of Nubia and he built up the treasury as best he could with the economy only at 3.0d/mo.

In 1573 POrtugal again wars against spain and Sarsa joins in but instead of worry about some distant war. He was given word that nubia had gotten rid of its ally turkey and was just alone with Aden as ally. So Sarsa said he dreamed of glory one night and declared war on Nubia on february 16, 1573.

Sarsa had an army of 58,000 men and he drove half his army to Massawa where he was victorious. In 1573 he managed to push through to Bisharin and then on to Sudan where he was defeated and pushed all the way back to Keren and then further back to Issas.

After regrouping his army, Sarsa attacked the armies of Aden and Nubia now sieging Keren in 1574. However he was again and then again defeated due to the enemies excellent firepower. Sarsa did weaken them however and after building his army back up he tried to fight once again.

In 1575 Sarsa heard the battle cry of god and he defeated the enemy in Keren and chased them clear accross Massawa then Bisharin and into Sudan were he began to siege the capital. Sarsa had a good army now of 40,000 men. He sieged Sudan and Bisharin while Nubia licked its wounds to the north with no soldiers left.

It would seem now Ethiopia had the upper hand. But back home inflation rose to an alarming 40% and soldiers were very expensive draining the treasury.

1576 Though Bisharin fort fell in october to Ethiopian soldiers, the Ethiopian war effort slowed as the treasury fell to just 80ducats left and desert heat drained the army down to 25,000 men.

1577 With Ethiopia near victory as Sarsa was just days away from taking the fort in Sudan, suddenly 9,000 nubian men attacked him and routed him back to the south. Ethiopia would never recover from this defeat because King Sarsa was blinded in battle and forced to go and stay in his castle in Axum. the army now had no strong leader.(game said general sarsa died, but my monarch still lived, hmmmm)

Battles all accross the land raged with Nubia gaining ground. The ethiopian army lost many men and just could not recover.

1578 more bad news comes as the last ducat is spent on the last recruits. A ray of hope came early when the last stand for ethiopia led them to victory all the way back to sudan, however the men were drained and so a counter assault from Nubia easily pushed them back south into ethiopia.

Nubia refused to give peace in any way to Ethiopia, they were determined to humiliate king sarsa and his country and his god.

1579 In a mad fit, king sarsa breaks his alliance to the europeans. Nubia retook Basharin fort and massawa and sieged Keren. Ethiopias army was in dissaray and down to a token force of 10,000 men.

1580 Nubia lost men to attrition so the siege on keren ended however both sides were so fatigued from war they just sat there.

1581 Inflation skyrockets in Ethiopia to 71% crippling the economy. King Sarsa goes into isolation in his hideout in Afars. On may 8th 1581 ethiopia accepted peace with Nubia at a cost of 35ducats and overall loss of 140,000 men. The country was out of money and out of a real king and out of any standing army worth anything. Ethiopia was in ruins.

1584 God has mercy on ethiopia and gives her a free 9 warship fleet.

1588 relations with portugal fall to +137

1589 Ethiopia enters an alliance with Portugal and france.

1590 Inflation rises to 80% and in a Phony war Ethiopia joins Portugals war against spain. That war ends in 1592.

1595 POrtugal men die in droves but finally get rid of the natives in mogadiscio. Ethiopia takes advantage of this and builds a trade post there claiming more land for Ethiopia and god.

1596 King Sarsa dies but nobody really cared much considering the old blind man was half insane and always in hiding.

Thus the glorous rise of a new King, Jacob.

---------ill continue later, hope you enjoy seeing me get my butt spanked:D

Well, I have to say that, after the Italy aar, this one leaves a teensy little bit to be desired in the success department :D.

By the way, can your inflation go above 100%? Mine's never been anywhere near as high as 80, so I've never really wondered before. But if there's a cap to it, perhaps you'll be able to survive until you get some governors... and place them in your 3 provinces and have your inflation go down to 97%... and then watch it go all the way back up just as quickly... aww, never mind.

i had the "monarch died in combat but still lived on" thing happen in a game as scotland. i just interpreted as he was badly wounded and was no longer physically able to lead troops in the field, and spent the rest of his days in the palace.

KING JACOB 1597-1606

1597, Ethiopia was in near ruin based on the ever increasing inflation and poor treasury. King Jacob had high hopes for his christian nation though and scraped up enough funds to establish a colony in both Somalia and then the newly claimed spice land of Mogadiscio. With the treasury now dry of funds Ethiopia was forced to wait yet again for money to build up.

1602 Ethiopia joined its allies POrtugal and France in a war against Spain. This war would bring no combat directly to the kingdom and it ended uneventfully in 1605. King Jacob didnt even know where all this world was that the portuguese spoke of. He has a map that showed where the capitals of spain and portugal were but nothing around it. All these rumors of this massive new world and lands all around fascinated him but he could not convince his allies to give him their maps of the world. So ethiopia went about blindly, knowing only of its direct sarroundings. King Jacob died in 1606 leaving the throne for his son.

KING SISSINIOS 1607-1632

1613 Oman invaded Aden and turkey helped to squash aden. By 1615 Oman had annexed all of Adens small realm. That same year Nubia would become vassal to turkey as the Ottoman empire expanded its influence. King Sissinios was the inheriter of a 92% inflation with a treasury of 300ducats. He continued to reject inflation and tried to build up money. By 1626 the treasury was 656ducats and plans were being made to change the budget to infra research to build the countries structure and economy. the navy was expanded to 12 warships and Ethiopia had the strongest navy it ever had. It desperately sought after spanish ships to try and steal rutters but found none off the horne of africa.

1632 King Sissinios dies and leaves a full treasury but inflation at 100% for his heir.

KING BASILIDES 1632-1666

King Basilides cared not for a strong navy as it drained the budget so he scrapped the 12 ship fleet and continued to save money. 1635 Ethiopia reached trade and infra lvl 3 which greatly helped the economy to 4.4/mo . However that same year a plague hit Issas, Afars and Ogaden. Afars and Ogaden were reduced to lvl 3 colonies and the economy took a nose dive to 3.4/mo. Inflation rose to 105% by 1640. Unable to buy anything really King Basilides used some comprimise and chose to cut inflation by spending 10d for every 1%. So with 950ducats the inflation was cut down to 5%.

Thanks to saving of money however, Ethiopia reestablished a city in Afars by 1644. The economy rose to 4.5d/mo and the budget changed to 100% research infra. In 1646 while ethiopia settled down to a normal meager existance after its brutal economic woes of the past. Nubia to its north was annexed diplomatically by turkey. Then the following year turkey annexed Oman in the same way. This greatly alarmed King Basilides as the turks were muslim enemies and strong ones at that. 1648-1650 most of europe began a war against turkey, who was the obvious badboy galore.

1651 Ethiopia joined its ally Portugal and France in the war against Turkey. It was a gamble at best but worth an honorable shot. Ethiopia had a standing army of 57,000 men. The war would drag on with a few small attacks on Keren by algerian troops of which were easily destroyed. Then in 1656 turkey came marching with no fewer than 40,000 troops to keren and routed the ethiopians to the south into Issas. The king had to flee Axum also. The siege on keren by turks was a failure for them and they lost masses of men to attrition. After turkey tried and tried to siege the lvl 5 fortress in keren and lost thousands of troops doing it. Finally the war ended in 1663 with little more bloodshed or fighting for ethiopia.

1664 the economy was at 4.0d/mo treasury at 191d stability holding at +3
1666 the king Basilides died leaving the crown for his son.

KING JOHANNES I 1667-1681

1667 Being one of the men who surveyed the area for colonial establishment years ago. King Johannes I was happy to at last spend the funds enough to send settlements to mogadiscio to build a city. At a cost of 400ducats, Mogadiscio city was founded for ethiopia, christianity spread throughout the desert of the horne of africa. This success and continued alliance with Portugal led to an economical revolution thanks to the new king. He began to use government funds to spur on trading and the economy rose to 9.0d/mo. However trouble would come when Johannes took out bank loans to help pay for all he had done and he was unable to pay the loans so more were taken, before too long Ethiopia was facing economical ruin once again.

1674 Johannes was refused economical aid from its allies and he broke all alliances with Portugal and France leaving Ethiopia in isolation in a hostile muslim world. 1676 bankruptcy hit ethiopia and the economy was once again turned on its heels. Inflation skyrocket to 39%, stability to 0 and all tech research lost. The army was increased just before the fallout and it stood at a healthy 40/6/40cannon. The best army ethiopia had ever.

1681 King Johannes drown in his own bath tub and was succeeded by his son.

Watch out for King Jesus :D

Good job just surviving so far. Making it too the end is a moral victory for a country like Ethiopia. Why break alliance? don't you need them to ballance the Turk, now more than ever? And can't you grab a couple border provinces with your record-strong army?

Bear in mind, Ethiopia wasn't quite this weak, as its heartland was inside the Permanant Terra Incognita.

Ok lets get one thing settled here, there is no reason for anymore screenshots besides the first one you will find on the arsenal page (follow my screenshot link below) The reason is because ethiopia since the beginning has no maps, its all the same basically. This is a very boring game compared to others i have played. Heck my Aden aar was lots more fun because i actually explored the far east. I am getting no where with Ethiopia, then again i am not playing very well either. I just havent gotten lucky and gotten maps thats all. So as long as im isolated im forced to sit and spin and maybe fight the turks.

Anyways, D+8 i read up on detailed history of ethiopia for this time period. Ethiopia was overun by muslim raiders during this time and the portuguese saved them from extinction in the highlands. maybe ethiopia had more land, but they were pretty dang weak in comparison to other nations. so this game is about right.

I hope you enjoy this aar though i cant do crap in it. I think its interesting to get my butt beat this bad, well hmmm it isnt all that bad considering the circumstances right? all i have to say is

WHAT A GAME!!!!!!! :D

KING JESUS I 1682-1705
It was true that after the desastrous rule of Johannes that the economy was beginning to pick up. It was the direct result of Johannes opening up the treasury for merchants to use. This allowed merchants to travel far to other COTs. So by 1689 , well into the reign of King Jesus, the economy was up to 10.3/mo. Which was great for ethiopia considering the last couple hundred years.

Trouble came in 1690 when 18,000 of the elite army men deserted for whatever reason. Perhaps it was the Portuguese women that began to flood the country, dunno.:D Either way the army was not the focus of Ethiopia right now. It was beginning to like the new economic success and as each year went by the economy rose with it. 1691 11.6d/1693 12.2d/1694 13.3d/1696 15.4d/ etc etc. King Jesus was so proud of his new wealth that he brought the country into another european alliance. This time with Poland and Venice.

1701 someone gave Ethiopia a gift of state of 200ducats and then venice entered a royal marriage with King Jesus I. Ethiopia was in the middle of a period of peace and prosperity. Relations with portugal however suffered to -27 but with venice they improved to +34.

Jesus put the budget to 70% treasury income. he had 164ducats saved up and the economy just kept rolling forward. 1702 19.4d/1703 23.7d

1703 Turkey reminded Ethiopia of its territorial ambitions when it peacefully annexed the hedjaz. all of arabia and north africa was practically turkish territory. Only ethiopia and algieria were the remaining two capital nations in africa. Jesus would reign to 1705 with the economy hitting a peak around 19d to 22d/mo. inflation was at 3% treasury at 242d and peace with everyone.

KING TAKLA HAIMANOT I 1706-1707
Just after king jesus died, turkey declared war on venice and King Takla brought Ethiopia into it with her allies. Just in time for the war was a random colonial dynamism. 2 settlers, 3 warships, 3000men, Jeremiah the conquistador in Issas. King Takla sent Jeremiah with 11,000 men and 25 cannon into Messawa turkey just to the north in 1707 to siege it. King Takla died suddenly while being bathed by his wife and two maids, poor guy:p

KING THEOPHILUS 1708-1710
1708 jeremiah took massawa at last and though the desert heat caused attrition he moved on to siege Bisharin. By 1709 Ethiopia took control of basharin and offered peace for massawa but turkey refused. Poland gave turkey 250d for peace. Jeremiah took his men further north to siege sudan.

1710 Just as jeremiah was about to take sudan, venice signed peace with turkey ending the war and leaving Ethiopia once again empty handed for her efforts. King Theophilus died while king taklas exwife and her two hand maidens bathed him, hmmmm :p

KING JUSTUS 1711-1715
1711 the treasury was at 261 ducats with the economy hovering around 22.3d/mo. Ethiopia though celebrated its victories over the strong muslims and also its economical developments. Times were good for Ethiopia mostly, though the people in the desert lowlands in Ogaden, somalia, mudugh and mogadiscio suffered from heat and exhaustion as they didnt have air conditioning yet.

1713 Poland dows Teutonic order so Ethiopia supports its ally in a phony war.

1714 The lvl 1 colony in somalia is down to 42 people as the women leave their husbands due to the extreme heat. actually the wives nagged so much that the husbands just kicked them out. thus 42 colonists:D with -2% growth.

1715 The men of somalia became upset without their wives and revolted. But they were butchered by Ethiopian armies who were well rested thanks to recent marriages for many of the soldiers:D
At the end of 1715, king Justus died while being bathed by three old hand maidens.. hmmm three in a row.

KING DAVID III 1716-1720
After the death of Justus, the economy for some reason skyrocked. In 1717 the economy was 50d/mo and it rivaled many european nations now. Ethiopia was becoming rich it seemed however that economy depended completely on trade with a spanish COT in east asia. The good times would keep rolling until in 1719 the spanish embargoed Ethiopia and the good times came tumbling down to 21.5d/mo economy still not bad though.

so furious with this action was king david that he declared war on spain and poland and venice joined to help ethiopia. Just as the war started though, jeremiah died leaving ethiopia with no general.

1720 a refinery was built in ogaden free of charge thanks to the eu program and spain landed 6000 men in keren which defeated ethiopias 20,000 man army. With ethiopias capital occupied but not controlled by the enemy king David III was captured and killed that year.

next would be king Bakaffa of ogaden to rule the great christian nation of Ethiopia.

stay tuned friends.....

expect the last couple updates to this painful aar in a couple of days. Thanks to all who read through it and enjoyed it. I hope the undetailed, quick writing style is as enjoyable as a very detailed aar. I like writing them both ways:)

KING BAKAFFA 1721-1729
Bakaffa inherited a war against spain. Ethiopia was not prepared for this war but as she had done so well in the past, she would survive.

Spain would show it had technical superiority and after defeating and then sinking the 3 ship Ethiopian fleet. Spain landed troops uncontested all over the empire. After Ethiopias army was routed by just 11,000 spanish and somalia was taken by spain threatening to take more. Ethiopia was beaten with no way of coming from behind. Spain offered peace to Bakaffa for Somalia and 13d and it was accepted. Thus was the first territorial loss to a country in war.

The army kept pace at around 15d/mo thanks to a new suprise naval equipment center in issas, the naval tech excelled. Ethiopia maintaineed its marginal economy even after a phony war against milan in 1725 and the embargoe from isfahan in 1726. Dispite all the pressures Ethiopia managed to keep going on.

Bakaffa made an attempt to restore the economy with budget funds to treasury for merchants to draw from. But it wasnt enough and the economy just could not get close to what it was not long ago.

Bakaffa died in 1729

KING JESUS II 1730-1754
The treasury was at 150d Economy 17.3d and stab staying at +3
Jesus was embarrased that his predecessor lost somalia to spain so he had pride and thought he could gain somalia back. Ethiopia declared war on Spain in 1730 and only venice offered to help.

1732 Jesus also was tired of the catholics from europe and it all came to a head when Issas religion turned to catholic. So the persicution of catholics began. For the next several years there was little action. Spain seemed to tease ethiopia by keeping its massive fleet off the coast of issas. Ethiopia with its 19,000 man army sieged the catholic held issas in 1734. 1739 A white peace was signed with spain after no gains by either side. But the siege on issas rebels went on, and on, and on etc etc.

1740 Ethiopia was thrust back into war agianst spain again when it joined to help its allies agianst her. Ethiopian token forces took somalia but spain refused to give it for peace. After Ethiopia lost its 3 warship fleet again to spanish in 1742 the war was destined to go poorly.

While the miserable siege of issas continued to its 10th year in 1744 Ethiopia signed peace with spain and her allies and then joined poland in a war against a country called russia, that would be another phony war.

80 cannon joined the siege on issas but that sucker held strong until late 1744 it finally showed signs of breaking. by 1745 the people in the fort began to lower and after an assault the fort was taken by ethiopia at last.

1747 turkey occupied spanish somalia with a war between them. Venice became a vassal of france and it was found out that most nations hated Ethiopia for whatever reason.

1750 Jesus takes out a 500d loan to pay to build a colony in malindi which had just been evacuated by portuguese. After two failed attempts the third attempt succeded.

1752 Catholics rebel again in issas and the rebels took the territory and defeated ethiopias army in the process. Also that fateful year Turkey DOWed Venice and Ethiopia once again joined the war. It was Venice/France/Poland/Ethiopia vs Turkey and Russia.

many nations attacked russia though as it was the main badboy of the world. 1753 Jesus was suffering from temporary insanity and sent half his army to the north against the turks. that army was trapped by hostile forces and destroyed completely. With rebels now in control of issas to the south and turks marching from the north and massive enemy fleets in the red sea. Keren was trapped and so was Jesus II. He could not take the pressure and commited suicide in 1754.

.......next is king Joas I who is bound to make some changes for the better.

'for the better' as in 'things couldn't get any worse'? :)

Seriously, warspite, great AAR, you may have picked the geographically hardest country in EU. (Desert heat, next to Turkey, religion, economy, etc.)

Thanks!
