Ethiopia aar

Ver 1.08
IGC 2.0
NORMAL
NORMAL
forced annex, im the only major
No missions
no role play, just a side game im playing

Ethiopia starts with its Capital in Axum, Keren about 5000 population. Other territory is Issas/Afars/Ogaden. A standing army of 20,000. State religion is Orthodox (coptic christian) all states are coptic christian.

King Konstantin II 1492-1493
The economy stood at just 1.7 a month. The budget sliders were set to equal to army/navy/trade/infra . this would give little money to the treasury which stood at 200ducats in 1492 but taxes each year was only 3 or 4 ducats:(

Our knowledge of the outside world was limited also. Relations with Oman/Aden/Hedjaz/Nubia were 0 but fell -2 every few months ouch. -81 relations with mamelukes. Religious tolerance set at none for catholics, middle for muslims and full tolerance for orthodox (coptic christian)

King Konstantin split the army early and sent 10,000 men down to Afars where there was no defencive walls. Unfortunately 4000 men abandoned the army due to low supplies and the army there stood at 6000 once in position.

An attempt to ally with Muslim Nubia in 1493 failed utterly and it was found out that all Ethiopias neighbors had no tollerance for christianity. King Konstantin passed away in his sleep late in 1493.

KING NA'OD
King Naod would continue the attempted tollerance of muslims to show his desire for peace in the region. The economy struggled at 1.9 ducats a month and attempts at trade cost the treasury dearly with little results (treas 89) (trade income .1) Due to the poor trade King Naod restricted all trade with nations in 1494 but this did nothing really. King Naod also in an attempt to help the economy lowered military readiness and kept the army at 16000men. Settlers were asking for a chance to go to other lands, but the king refused to spend the funds needed for colonisation.

In 1495 a man by the name of Noah came to the king offering his services. He was a conquistador with 1000 followers. The king sent him south to explore the east coast of Africa.
It was discovered also that the kingdom of the mamelukes was destroyed by the kingdom of the turkish. This new kingdom of the turks hated Ethiopia and its christian king (rel -200) so no embassies were established.

By 1496 Noah the conquistador returned to Afars and reported to the King that there were many hostile natives to the south, he had lost half his men but mapped the lands he named Malindi and Kenya. King Naod rejected the conquistadors request for more men to attempt to discover more land. Ethiopia with enemies all around and no knowledge of other christian nations began to slip into an isolationist policy.

1497 There comes to Kings court word of wars in the north. Merchants and travelers tell of the white people from europe fighting among the turks and themselves. In 1498 Ethiopea attemtped to exchange maps with its neighbors but they were rejected. Now with no navy there was no way of extending outward to explore new lands. However King Noad seemed to be content with his current kingdoms borders.

1499 Success for Ethiopia came when Aden agreed to accept the christian nation into their alliance with Nubia. Noad then changed his nations budget to focus on not the military but on money and trade tech. Though no efforts were made to trade because of the high costs. Treasury stood at 100ducats of which the king protected for emergencies.

1502 Aden in a random event to honor King Noad, upgraded the fort of Issas to level 2. Relations went to -37 up from -58. Also that year trade tech went to high renaisance level 2.

1503 Infrastructure tech improved to high renaisance level 2 the economy benefited from this by going to 2.3/monthly income.

(6traders 6 settlers 6 diplomats) none being used really

1504 King Noad finally agreed to lift his restriction on using the treasury, and allocated 11ducats to send a trader to Mogadiscio, it failed and a second was sent and it also failed.

1505 A third trader sent to Mogadiscio was successful, Ethiopia had expanded its borders and some extra income though small began to flow thanks to the spices in the territory. Army tech improved to lvl 1. Travelers reported to the King that all of europe was now at war against turkey. the king was pleased to hear this.

Some native women from Mogadiscio were introduced to the kings court, they were the spice girls and they pleased the king:p However the kings fun would not last long when Noah in an attempt to garrison the territory was attacked by angry natives and Noah 3000 men were slaughtered. Noah returned to Ogaden with only 95 men left. The natives burned the trade post and demanded their wives be returned, OOOPS way to go king:D

1506 King Noad raises 6000 men and spreads them among his realm. He is not happy with the high cost of 24ducats for such weak soldiers.

1507 Noah the conquistador passes away in Ogaden from a broken heart of not being able to travel. In the captial of Axum, the kings court is flooded with news that turkey is losing much land to european attackers. Also naval engineers who once could only build expensive warships now could build cheaper transports as naval tech increased to lvl 1. King Noad wanted to go fishing so he had one ship built at a price of 20ducats. The ship was named Noad and that year the king went fishing and caught a couple of walleyes and big mouth bass.... oooh sorry, drifting off here... aaah he caught nothing and returned to Axum and died, poor guy.

Seriously, this could prove to be pretty interesting and VERY difficult.

trust me my friend this will take nothing away from my labor of love in italy. but i have been putzing around with some eu games on my free time (like i dont have enough free time:p ) and thought i would write this one up. I started reading a history book on ethiopia and decided this would be a good aar so here goes. I thought i would jump into the shoes of the times and not try to exploit the games weaknesses to command and conquer. Instead i would play it as if i was there, then, trying to make decisions i feel are appropriate and see how far i get. So far i can tell you i wont get very far. But its just a quick game and quick aar so no worries.

YES it will prove to be interesting once i play the whole thing through, because i will like i said before, play as realistacly as possible, throwing in some foolish humor where i can:)

as always friends, ENJOY!

I considered Ethiopia for my new AAR, but it was just to hard for me :D good job getting into an alliance, though I doubt you'll see any war for a loooong time.

colonizing mogadisho is definetly a best bet IMHO, if you can nudge it over the top all those hostile Somalis become loyal Coptic christians.

Interesting tidbits about Ethiopia

- First country to domesticate coffee (only region where wild coffee grows)
- Many Ethiopian Jews claim to be descended from the "Lost" tribe of Dan. This was enough to convince Israel to send troops there when these jews were being persecuted to evactute them to Isreal.
- Likewise, the Lost Arc is believed strongly in Ethiopia to reside in a small isolated monestary in Ethiopia. Only one man- an exceptionally pure monk who never leaves the monestary grounds- is allowed to see it. The monestary has hordes of armed guards to protect it, and the surrounding townspeople have a sacred oath to die before allowing an infedel to enter the grounds. This arrangement is reportedly centuries old.

These are things that might interest the christians who eventually will contact you.

SHORT RULE OF KING DAVID II 1508-1511

With inflation rising to 5% by 1508, King David II wanted to once again focus on the countries expansion into the horn or africa. Increasingly his people the christians were experiencing pressure from the muslims from the north and east. So having more land to settle upon was a wise thing. Soon after a trade post was established in Mogadiscio in 1511, king david grew ill and died. Some called it the curse of god saying he had touched the ark of the covenant and god struck him down. Others said the king was just a sickly young man. No matter what the cause, he was dead and a loosely held regency of local governors took over. They were extremely poor in matters of state such as diplomacy, administration or military.

THE RULE OF THE REGENCY 1511-1539
Dispite the lack of coordination among the governors of the various districts of Ethiopia. Every now and then a religious priest would step in to coordinate an activity to further the Kingdom while a search was made for a rightful heir to the throne. In 1512 Ethiopias army was sent to clear somalia and mudugh of native scum. this was in preparation for colonizing the lands that was full of slave labor. When an army of 3500men was sent to clear Mogadiscio, the entire force was killed and mogadiscio natives once again proved their might, thank god they couldnt travel outside of their territory.

1514 Brought rumors of a christian reformation taking place in europe. Little was known of europe except some writings by coptic priests who travelled to Rome by invitation of the Pope many years ago. The fall of the Byzantine empire over 50 years ago practicly shut off Ethiopias contact with the church outside its realm. So much emphasis continued to be placed on the monarchs rightful descendancy from King Soloman and Queen Sheeba.

Another rumor coming from travelers and merchants was that the Catholic Pope issued a treaty of tordesillas, but no one knew what that meant. Nor did the Ethiopian church much less care as catholics showed hostility in the past to the Ethiopian church.

1514 would also be a very busy year militarily. First the army tech was improved to lvl 3, cannons could be built but they cost way more than wanted to be spent. Another time in mid year, sailors in Issas woke up one day to find nine bristling clean warships anchored off shore, just sitting there, no crews. Could this be a gift from God? Ethiopias Navy was now a powerful force in the region, so it seemed.

The regency devised an idea to send the army of 16,000 men to Mogadiscio to get rid of the violent and uncooperative natives there. So all year they marched and in a coordinated attack from Ogaden and Mudugh hit the natives with waves of men. The natives had 2500inf and 2500 cavalry. It was enough to eat away at the Ethiopian army and by the end of the year, to the dismay of many mothers, there was no Ethiopians left on the battle field. The entire christian army was wiped out and the natives reproduced back to full strength sometime later. Ethiopia legend would tell of this national disaster and stayed away from Mogadiscio long into the future.

So for the next several years the army was rebuilt somewhat to 6000men. Most importantly Ethiopia had cleared the horn of africa (somalia and mudugh) of natives and began claiming that land with trade posts. By 1522 the regency had lvl 6 trade posts there and Ethiopia enjoyed the largest extent of its empire ever.

Relations with neighboring muslim states was turning rapidly sour. Nubia -151/Aden -106/Hedjaz -171/turkey -200 no other contacts.

Inflation was climbing past 11% and a recent insanity of some regents helped to further cripple the government. 1524 saw unhappiness among merchants and the loss of half of the progress made in trade. With no alliances and a weak army Ethiopia scraped along only by the grace of God. With the arc of the covenant held sacred in a tent, christians there felt Ethiopia was safe for all time. Boy were they wrong.

1527 the grace of god shined once again with the discovery of a new mineral that brought 400ducats to the tresury. The regency placed tax collectors in its four national provinces and it raised the economy up healthily to 3.4 ducats/mo.

Again new minerals were found in 1529 adding another 200ducats to the treasury. The new wealth spurred on the development of better fortresses all over the kingdom.

1535 Inflation was at 19% and no one knew how to lower it, seems god was needed for that one:) . still with no allies and enemies all around the christian kingdom of Ethiopia kept on peacefully and slowly existing.

Well Ethiopias days of peace would come to an abrupt end on April 8, 1539 when Nubia declared war on Ethiopia and dragged in their friends the Hedjaz, Oman and (gulp) Turkey. Ethiopia had no idea what it was up against. To add insult to injury, artisens in the country became unhappy and half of the effort put into infrastructure was lost.

The war heated up quickly against Ethiopia. 4000 omanies landed in Somalia and burned the trade post there. Keren was then sieged by 20,000 nubians joined by hedjaz. Turks could be seen marching from the north to join. The army was held in Issas waiting to build up more before striking.

Help would come in a superficial way when an heir to the throne was finally found. King Claudius was placed on the throne in 1540 and he inherited a war and a fight for Ethiopias existance.

thanks badkarma, i really love playing the little countries in this game. Number one because they are usually fast games and number two they are intersting challenges aside from the mega powers available in the game.

If you like this aar, check out my Aden aar i posted a few months ago, i think i lost the file for that one so i had to quit writing it, but man was it a blast to play.

Thanks for your comments Badkarma, good luck with Ragusa, maybe ill try that country next.

ethiopia is tough. i started a game as them once, just for the heck of it. i thought i would be bold, and declared war on nubia before they could DOW me. i marched my armies boldly into nubia......... and quickly died in the desert. nubian armies overran most of my core provinces, and then came that random crash to desktop event we've all come to love. so ended my brief but exciting career as the grey eminence of the king of ethiopia.

mogadisho (somalia) will be a good money-maker, if u can eliminate the natives and/or build a colony to a city. and you might want to consider attacking persia when they are busy with the turks, as they have some good provinces that will provide much-needed income. oman could be a good possibility too.

and remember, you're not that far from india...

The war as expected did not go entirely the way Ethiopia has hoped. First of all, the 9 warship navy was tossed around by the enemy in the red sea like a pin ball. After losing four ships the fleet returned to hide in the Issas port until wars end. On the eastern front against Oman the trade post in Mudugh was captured and burned so that made two trade post territories lost. Ethiopia suffered defeats against the Omani forces but Oman was too few to siege any land.

On the North front against Nubia and turkey, the capital of Axum was burning and about to fall. Ethiopia sent 16,000 men against enemy force of 4/0/10. the enemy was down to 1 cannon left and still forced the Ethiopians to retreat back to Issas. the siege on Keren is stopped thankfully though. After another crushing defeat where Ethiopia had 13,000 men lose against 1000 turks peace was finally reached with Nubia on August 4th 1541 and it ended the entire war.

Ethiopia reclaimed Somalia and Mudugh with trade posts and luck would shine when there was a -33% deflation for the economy.

King Claudius was tired of muslim aggression and trying to appease them with friendship. So he instituted zero tolerance for muslims in Ethiopia and gave tolerance to protestants and catholics.

1544 18000 men desert the army leaving Ethiopia with a token 11,000 man army, completely unprepared for war if it were to come again. Economy did increase to 4.2d/mo that year thanks to muscate COT.

1548 King Claudius gambles with 98 ducats and sends a missionary settlement to Mudugh to establish a colony and convert pagans. By the very grace of god it worked and Mudugh became Ethiopias first true colony. Glory be to God. did i mention growth rate was -2%:p

1550 In Mogadiscio where years before ethiopia lost an entire army to natives. England gave it a try this time with 5000 brave men. The battle lasted a couple of months but in the end england lost every man and the natives reproduced back to 5000 strong, mogadiscio was like an evil borg, unless you utterly defeat them, they cut you down and regenerated thier wounds to ravage you again. grrrrrr.

1551 King claudius passes away in a freak accident when a bag of coffee beans landed on his head while visiting Ethiopias revolutionary coffee mill. No heir was emediately found so again the regency of lords took control of the country.

ETHIOPIAN REGENCY 1551-1559

Economy slumped to 3.9 due to reductions in the muscat COT. In 1552 a man named David came to the regency offering his services of exploration. He was given a ship and this David began exploring much of the indian ocean off the horne of africa. The regency was fairly strong in matters of military and administration and thus it dictated policies of the future.

In 1554 there was a trade dispute in muscat oman, this led to the decline of Ethiopias trade there and subsiquent decline in the economy to 3.3ducats/mo. This led the regency to further seek relations with a people that was passing by the area frequently. They called themselves Portuguese and they were from europe. They dressed funny but seemed negotiable. when Portugal established a trade post in malindi an embassy was established for Ethiopia there. relations with Portugal were -86 at that time but the two nations agreed to a royal marriage and thus began improved relations.

By 1557 the regency watched in dismay as the economy slumped further to 3.0/mo. Knowing that they could no longer rely on the economy to get enough gold to improve relations with portugal, loans of 600ducats were taken and gifts of 600ducats given to portugal. Relations improved to +200 and Portugal also allowed Ethiopia into its alliance with Morocco and Mysore who knows where those countries were. Portugal refused numerous times to exchange maps so Ethiopia sat in the dark mostly to others.

Ethiopia began to slip into finacial decay and desaster loomed ahead and there was nothing anyone could do about it. Banks confiscated royal property to pay loans, the entire royal navy was lost and in 1559 the regency announced it had gone bankrupt and national stability plummeted to 0. the budget and all the time spent on technology was lost. Inflation blasted to 29% The army was boosted to 42,000 men but they were not being paid so they had no moral or will to fight. To top it all off, Ethiopia still had no maps of the outside world beyond the red sea.

Then 1560 an heir to the throne was found and it was Menas I who claimed to be a direct descendant of King Soloman of israel and Queen Saba.

thats why i love this game, its flexibility and all. If you play an honest game, you dont always come out on top, especially if you start out as the ugly duck (poor minor)

Hmmm, this one giving you a run for your money huh warspite? :D

I also like to play minors every now and then just to see how i do. You seem to have the right idea of not dwelling on a slow detailed game as there is little useful details in those minor games unless you start winning big time. Nice aar though, extremely different from what im used to from you:p

My poor dark-skinned brother!

Ragusa suffers along with you... and wishes you luck!

Come to think of it, that might make a fun multi-player game:

Ragusa, Ethiopia, The Knights, Tuscany etc. all in human hands...

:)
