if i understand it correctly, ethics divergence is supposed to do two things.

if it's positive - have pops drift away from your ethos by random chance
if it's negative, have them dift towardsy ou instead.

however, for some reason, in my current game they're drifting away like mad on my capital - which has always been -10% for a net -1% chance of ethics divergence. yet they're drifting away regardless. heck, a pop that's in the process of growing is collectivist/millitarist instead of fanatic materialist/millitarist. i'm feeling like something wonky is going on here, or that i'm missign something.

Could it be that ethics are always supposed to be dynamic and -/+ to ethics divergence only increases/descreases the likelihood of divergences appearing by a small percentage?

Honestly divergence doesn't work very well anyway, all they ever seem to do is lose ethoses they never gain them. I was hoping to pick up individualist down the line when I started, but the only divergent pop I've gotten 50 years in are true neutrals.

i've never had any +ethics divergence modifiers on my capital. no migration, not edicts, no events - nothing.

i don't mind them changing on themselves(it's rarely a problem anyways) but if negative ethics divergence is supposed to make you a homogenous planet/empire, it should at least do what it says.

This problem (and some related issues) has been fixed but not yet thoroughly tested, and will be included in the first proper patch, which we plan to release later in May. With the fix, when a Pop diverges it tends to retain 3 spent Ethics points, and never fewer than 2.

I think it would be good if they could (by random fluctuation etc) go up to more than 3. Is this going to be possible?

So it's better to mod basic amount of divergence until it fixed? Because is severely hinders Empires focused on "Fanatical" ethos. Individualists will constantly loose their sweet energy bonus, Collectivist slave-drivers will be constantly unhappy with slaves, Xenophile will be less content with aliens.

Regarding your growing pop that is different this can be because it has grown from a pop of that ethics but both different from you original. I would like to know how the game decides which pops grow and which don't on a multi ethic planet.

If they change it they also have to nerf the speed of it I think.

If I colonize a planet basically all pop will have lost at least one if not both ethics before I even get a planetary administration that would reign that in. Having some changes here and there is fine and a good thing, but having whole populations change after a short time and - after the changes - potentially picking up widely different ethics will make the choice at the beginning weaker and would lead to a lot of chaos.

There is a rather serious bug in the game currently where Pops mostly only lose Ethics when they are diverging. This problem (and some related issues) has been fixed but not yet thoroughly tested, and will be included in the first proper patch, which we plan to release later in May. With the fix, when a Pop diverges it tends to retain 3 spent Ethics points, and never fewer than 2.

does that bug happen to impact negative ethics divergence as well? over multiple saves and planet's i'm noticing pops losing ethics(and rarely gaining them) even though it often never went negative after the initial colonisation. heck, generally when i start a game i tend to have a random pop on the planet miss a ethic.

If they change it they also have to nerf the speed of it I think.

If I colonize a planet basically all pop will have lost at least one if not both ethics before I even get a planetary administration that would reign that in. Having some changes here and there is fine and a good thing, but having whole populations change after a short time and - after the changes - potentially picking up widely different ethics will make the choice at the beginning weaker and would lead to a lot of chaos.
I have found that if you want to keep your pop ethics on a new planet you have to issue propaganda edict which gives you the ten years needed to get 5 pops and build a planet admin.

will there be hotfixes so smaller - medium sized problems until then ?also later in may :(

I experimented a bunch and can confirm that ethnic divergence is bugged. If you have negative divergence, pops will lose ethics over time. The stat only appears to prevent them from gaining new foreign ethics, from what I've seen.
