I would sy yes. Depends on what you want to play, however. If you want to start how this game got started, with christian rulers, SoA is probably the best choice.
Legacy of Rome is nice because of the retinues, but pretty much useless otherwise, unless you want to play as or under the Byzantine emperor.

Depends how tight of a budget you're on. I think a fairly unanimous DLC that is not required from a lot of people is Sunset Invasion. Not only is it laughably unrealistic, I've seen it conflict with certain mods, such as A Game of Thrones (yup, nothing like seeing Aztecs invading Westeros!).

Way of Life is my favorite for all the personal events and intrigue options it brings. Charlemagne is my second for the earlier date start. I do like Legacy of Rome because I can rebuild the Roman Empire, and I just enjoy starting on the right side of the map, dangerously close to the Mongol horde. Byzantines can also blind people, so if you enjoy being an asshole to others, it's fun. I think Horse Lords is fun too, because the Horde really needed some new mechanics. Problem is, the Horde AI isn't very good yet. I love a good challenge, so regardless of what people say, I also like the Conclave DLC -- the more reasons my vassals have to hate me, the better imo (the CKII+ mod is also great in this regard!)

Honestly, whatever tickles your fancy starting out. CK2 is on sale often enough that it won't take long for you to nab the big expansions. Sunset Invasion is a hoot, plus it gives you something to do late game if you choose the western side of the map, but it's hardly vital.

However you do it, I'd say Rajas of India and Sunset Invasion for last. India's neat and all, but despite me getting into the game at Rajas and putting in 500 hours, I've yet to do more then dabble for a few hours in India.

Thanks for the input everyone. I just missed the latest Steam sale so I'll end up snagging the game on a later one. I figure I'll start off with a little at a time just so I wont get overwhelmed by everything all at once.

Yeah I pretty much agree with everything you said. I would get The Old Gods for the start date and playable pagans and WoL as it adds to anyone you might want to play as. And as for the Sunset Invasion you are either going to like the shake up it adds to the west or hate it for how ridiculously unrealistic it is oh and I remember one of the devs for the AGOT mod I think it was blackninja say that the Aztec invasion of Westeros was intentional because reasons I cant remember right now but sounded good when I read them on their forum.

lol that was intentional!? Okay, now I have to read what they were thinking. The only reason I can think of is because there is a GoT fan rumor (more like a fan wish), suggesting land could be discovered west of Westeros, and jokingly enough, Gendry would be the one to discover it if he keeps sailing that boat of his. It would be ironic having a continent called Westeros no longer being the western most landmass.

In the backstory of aSoIaF, one of the Starks in the distant past is said to have sailed to the west and vanished. The GoT mod with SI turned on operates under the assumption that he found the Aztecs (and dragons) and that his descendants return to Westeros to take it at some point.

Depends what you wanna play as.

Christian or Jewish? Sons of Abraham.
Muslim? Sword of Islam.
Pagan? The Old Gods.
Byzantium? Legacy of Rome.
Venice? The Republic.
Hordes? Horse Lords.
Indians? Rajas of India.

Way of Life and Conclave are more about role-playing, character building, and internal politics.
Charlemagne is a complete mess of a start, but has some nice bonuses like Zunism, viceroyalties and custom kingdoms - all of its things really need other DLCs, though. Can't play a Zunist without Old Gods, even if you have Charly.
Sunset Invasion is cool, but it just gives a late-game enemy to fight. You aren't really 'supposed' to play as an Aztec, though you can.

If you just want bare minimum for playing a Christian ruler, go with Sons of Abe and Way of Life. Byzantium will be playable but flavorless.

I would suggest Old Gods, because of the start date and playable pagans, and Legacy of Rome, because of the Retinues that are one of the most important additions, in my opinion.
