Having made my way through the tree to the unlocking tech I now had the opportunity to make my first espionage attempts...

I like the general idea behind, but so far I see (unless you roleplay) little reason not to exclusively use elderly women with a high Charisma stat (perferably ones you have gained by annexing other countries before). The 4 or 5 times I tried I always suceeded in gaining the extra info on treasury and manpower, with getting the report that my spy has vanished a few yeras later (but checking the character profile of those women, they all died of natural cause - probably just a bit speeded up by the additional health penalty characters incur for spying). From the 2.0 changelog and what the OP wrotes I have grasped from another post, additional effects seem to be possible.

Does anyone know if there are any dangers involved? Can the country you spy on catch your spy and if so, do they get angry? Does a higher charisma (or other primary stats/traits) affect chances to trigger the further beneficial events?

I already have some ideas in my head how this nice little feature could be improved (e.g. why not having the option to release PoWs and send them back to their home country as spies? Of course, if they accept that should depend on their traits/loyalty to their home nation...), but I would first like to get an idea how deep the gameplay around it is already.

I've been internally debating whether to get espionage or not in my current Rome game, but your post makes me want to do it just to launch my elite Italian Granny Spy Corps!

Okay, picking a character with a Charisma stat of only 4, I leaned that spies can also get caught right after sending them somewhere...

...however, since you only suffer a moderate popularity hit when they get executed in foreign lands (and no relation hit with the country you tried to spy on), I consider the risks of espionage still as pretty limited.

Yah, I just had a character with charisma of 7 immediately caught and suffered loss of popularity. So didn't get a day's worth of data. I was at war with the target at the time, so I wonder if that affected the odds at all. My prior spy labored quietly for years in the target sending me data, but was killed when I authorized her attempt to sabotage their military. Didn't suffer loss of popularity when the first spy was caught and killed though, just lost the $600 I paid for the attempt.
