Escorts-Convoys

Could there be a way to either make convoys real units so you could attach CV, CA, CL, DD, and BC to them so that they would escort the convoy and help it OR make it so that you could deploy a ship to an escort pool and then assign them to convoys?

Convoys-Escorts

Ships, mainly destroyers or light cruisers of obsolete types, should be available for deployment to the convoy escort pool, rather then just be scrapped. A great part of the allied escorts during the battle of the Atlantic were obsolete WW1 destroyers, updated for escort and anti-submarine work.

A destroyer flotilla, if passed to the escort pool, could count for 10 new escorts for the convoy system. The same could happen to light cruisers.

I was thinking more of getting rid of the convoy escorts and have individual ships that could be assigned/transferred in and out of escort duties. For example as America I want to escort a convoy into the Med. but the Italians have alot of air cover. So I attach a CV to that convoy for X amount of time and also attach some CLs, DDs to it. THen when I'm done, I assign the carriers back to the fleet and they are ready for service. I think that there should also be new units in HOI3, Destroyer Escorts, Corvettes, and AA Cruisers. I just don't like having escorts or convoys being as generic as they are. Maybe have new convoy units, Tanker, and Freighter.

Hmm, sorry, but this strikes me as far too involved for vanilla. Be able to assign ships to escort duty from the line, fine - maybe have a 'rack' somewhere of what the escort pool consists of with each unit adding a number to it (i.e. an additional stat. - a bit like the 'supression' value for land units). Extra unit types and split convoy types, though, just gets too involved for 'average' play.

What would be very cool, though, is if there were extra 'slots' left free for units and such that modders could use - like the 'spare' nation tags, but for extra unit types, attachment ('brigade') types and so on. Also, the ability to have multiple attachments on all units - with a unit stat. to define the limit for the particular unit type. This would even allow 'build your own division' type mods to be built.

Its a good idea and it would always be helpful and make it alot easier to actually see the convoys traverse the map. And would be nice to be able to wipe them out completly with a big fleet waiting for them. The "spare" convoy ships not in use could be distributed somewhat evenly among your ports after size and safety. Any Fleet could then be given a escort mission to any friendly port on the map using these spare ships for "special" supply delivery if you need a 100% secure convoy without transfering all your fleet to another "pool" of ships. These spare convoys could also be lost during port strikes, and transfers back with a rate of around 1 per day when the port is safer again (repaired).

Hopefully in HoI3 :)

I certainly don't think that the standard game should involve grouping cargo ships into convoys like fleets and then manually loading and ordering them - that's way too much micromanagement!!

It might, on the other hand, be cool to leave potential ship unit attributes that would allow modders to set up such a scheme for a 'logistical nightmare' mod... :D
