So I have been tossing the idea around for awhile and am wondering how one would go about getting to the Americas to do set up a new Roman Empire in the backyards of the natives before getting annexed by the Ottomans. In my last game as Burgundy-Netherlands I completely kicked France out of Europe and the Americas but they ended up moving their capital to Africa and conquered all of Mali and Songhai and have been eating the surrounding Portuguese and Spanish colonies. I want to do that as Byzantium and come back to wreck the Ottomans. Any Ideas on how one would do so?

With the recent changes to fleet basing rights - ie, you don't get colonial range from them anymore - it's impossible to colonise as a coastal minor until, say, mid 1700's. At which point, all the good land is taken.

I'd say if you want to play a colonial game, Paradox want you to play as one of the main colonisers, judging by how idfficult they've made it otherwise.

Well i'm not entirely sure it is impossible. The logistics are definitely problematic but I think I know how to handle it:
1. Declare war on Tunis immediately as the game starts and take a coastal province. Core it to extend your range.
2. Ally either Portugal or Castille and declare war on Morocco and take a low base tax province. Core it.
3. Harsh treatment Berber provinces during the coring process and take Exploration as soon as you hit Adm 4 and tank Diplo for the first 2 ideas
That should get you to Brazil but I would expect to lose your Greek provinces at this time to the Ottomans and you would also be lagging behind in all of your tech thanks to your negative stability, harsh treatment, and tanking Diplo.

Northern Ireland also makes a nice point to jump off to Greenland if you want to go that way, but that requires the bonus from Exploration and level 7 tech, Tunis and then down to west Africa and Brazil sounds faster

How about getting fleet rights from spain/portugal, then send a transport fleet with troops to america and conquer/annex some territory. Wait until Ottomans DoW you and give them all european territory they want. Afaik, if all your european territory is gone, your capital will be relocated to one of the American provinces, which means you will be able to naturally core there.

Huh, didn't think of that. Now all I have to do is find a way to cling to life long enough to drop the 800 points into Exploration to get to the Mayans. Gonna go test this out.

Ok so I just tested it out and yes the method mentioned above where you simply ask for fleet basing rights from Portugal and Conquer a random Native american country and wait until the ottomans take all of you European holdings does in fact work. However you need to last until at LEAST 1458 in order to get the needed ideas to get to the Americas in the first place. So all you need to do is hold out untill around 1461 or so and you will be set. Can't wait for this.

It's not even difficult. Not only can you get FBR from literally anybody on the western European seaboard, you can literally just conquer into Ireland too. By far the easiest approach would be to just conquer a native tribe or two and then lose all your stuff back in Europe on purpose. With two adjacent, uncored provinces, you can core both. Any OPM still has an easy run at Africa or new world as long as they can survive until QFTNW. However, Ireland is a particularly good hopping point right now since it can reach Greenland the same as Iceland while being much, much easier to conquer.

you can also just do the Tunis/Tripoli thing, then jump around and hit the Mali before they westernize. Purge Africa and use that to hit the Ottomans. No colonial nations needed. You can then island hop into the Pacific and go Protectorate Asia. -- Feeding you tonnes of ducets to build up to be strong enough to hurt the Ottomans enough to start forcing cores to return to you.
