Error 183: EIC Guide from GG fails to download

The strategy guide fails to download with an "error message 183", stating that it 'failed to rename file' and that it ' cannot create a file that already exists'.

Of course I have tried to download to a different directory and also to download it on my other computer, but the downloader produces the exact same error message. Any hints on how to solve this issue or any one else experiencing this issue with downloading the EIC Guide from GamersGate?

I have the same problem as you. Yesterday I wrote an e-mail to Gamersgate for support. Let's hope that after weekend we have a solution. It seems some people had the same problem with EU Rome and it was solved. These kind problems are very disappointing. As far as I know, they already have our money, it's in good conditions, no broken euros, but we still dont have our product.

Are you on about the manual (the manual and the patch are the only additional downloads listed)? If so, it downloads fine for me (though I didn't try yesterday when you two did). It's 22.78 MB though, so maybe that was part of the problem?? Also, a lot of what is in the manual is covered in the tutorials.

No, it isn't about the manual. We talk about the official strategy guide which is about 40MB, with 160 pages. Indeed, the manual is already included when you download the game, you don't need to download manual separately. We just talk about the official guide. Thanks anyway.

Hi Shauko, good to hear from someone with presumably good contact with the game developers and that you're active here. My congrat's to you and Nitro on a very interesting and entertaining EIC game! I have taken the issue of "download error 183" up in two emails - as you suggested - already, including a screenshot of the error message directly with Gamersgate as I guess it has to do with the way they wrap up their content and not the guide it self. BUT, since you took the trouble of posting your note, I will make a remark on Gamersgate: I would have guessed that, even though it is understandable that there are lots of issues to deal with in game development (I've worked in the IT sector myself), I would have guessed that an online provider would pay high attention to the delivery mechanism (After all it is Nitro who gets the work and has to do the patching I guess, not GG). So therefore: "no delivery mechanism" means "no sale". Given that several others have reported the exact same error message in connection with the EIC Guide, in connection with downloading the EIC game itself, and as far as I can tell also with previous deliveries of EU Rome, I must say that I cannot see what other role there is for Gamersgate than to provide the best possible download service. Personally GG has worked flawlessy for me in earlier purchases, but in the downlaod error FAQ and error messages, this "error 183" is not even aknowledged or described, so I do not know weather to continue troubleshooting locally or wait for them to fix things. As it is I purchased some books from a well known online web shop, and I hope that I receive my online strategy guide before my printed books. To be precise: as a customer, the instant access to content I've paid for is one of the benefits I expect to experience online. Well, this is me killing of some time, I am not as cranky as I may sound. But I'd hate to experience this with new games like HoI3 coming up...

downloader generating win error 183 solved

Well, GG's support provided an updated version of the installer's .exe-file and the game guide installed without any problems.

Searches on the web on programming related issues revealed thar 'error 183' is generated by windows and is linked to file creation errors such as use of reserved names (try to create a file in win called 'con.txt'! you can't because 'con' is a reserved name!). There are probably other reasons too that I dont know of, but the point is that you can forget about local troubleshooting like deleting temp-files etc, since this has to be fixed on the Gamergate's side. It has cost me some time before realizing this, but if the same error should occur later - which it might - you should email their support and wait patiently... But they will fix it and hopefully it should be worth the wait. Thanks to all those who responded too my postings here and on the Gametutor and GG's support!
