It would be nice to have the rivers eroding the landscape over time. Let's say the map is defined with a layer of soil over solid rock. When the water has eroded away this layer, it stops eroding, or the eroding goes extremely slow. This way you can create rivers in a more natural way by filling a hole with water, and when it floods over, the water runs over down to the next hole. Over time this running digs into the soil making a narrower, more realistic river.
