Entire family including my wife instantly gets thrown in jail whenever my capital is sacked.

Is this a game feature or a bug? I was in the middle of a crusade and a 3k stack sacks my capital province. Instantly, my entire family is thrown in jail including my heir, my wife, and all of my sons and daughters I hadn't married off. Sacking the enemy capital doesn't free them and I couldn't end the war without occupying the entire Kingdom of the realm I had declared war on. I had literally 100% occupation percentage and 50% battle percentage, but I couldn't end the war because they had my heir and a few of my sons in jail.

Are you new to the game? This is indeed a game feature- your family resides in your capital province, and there is a chance that they get captured when the castle get captured.

No not a 'chance.' You need to read my post completely buddy. My entire family gets thrown in jail when my capital is sacked, 100% of the time. Every single child of mine. Their grandchildren. My spouse. Everyone gets thrown in jail 100% of the time the instant my capital is sacked. That's what is happening in my game. I'm asking if that's a game feature or if it's a bug.

Poor luck, likely. Are the raiders members of warrior lodges?

Nope. It's a regular Christian vs Muslim grand crusade launched on my part. Whenever my capital is sacked, and it doesn't matter who I play in the game or who I'm up against or even if I just get raided, my entire family is thrown in jail with a 100% success rate. My character's wife, my sons/daughters that weren't married off, their children and spouses, everyone is instantly thrown in jail. It's not bad luck and it's happened over several games. It's designed this way or my game is bugged. That's all I'm asking of you guys and I'm assuming no based on the way you replied.

First of all, don't let your capital unprotected. Build the cheap fort and leave some army to be raised or purchased there. In emergency, give your capital to someone to move it, before enemy arrives to it.

They don't generate random seed all the time. If your capital meets the seed chance, it is likely to get affected of the higher chance. When one of your family member is captured, it is almost always 100% that all of them will be captured - all your spouses, concubines, and children.

You see, I try to sack major vassals of my enemy kingdom, especially those who has the kingdom's de jure counties. I first send my raiders to capture my enemy's top duke's wife.

When I get his wife, I make her my concubine, land her, and execute her so his child will become my vassal. Then I give the child an empty kingdom title or two to raise his opinion to 100, and imprison and execute him too.

Someday I will try playing a Norse game again, and try to conquer the whole world almost without wars.

Now the former enemy duke is my vassal king, inheriting a higher tier kingdom title from his son. If that gave me 51% of my enemy's de jure counties, I usurp the kingdom title and make a vassalization offer to the my enemy king.

If it didn't work and I have to make a war with the king, I still try to sack the burning castle again. If things go right, I could surrender and usurp his kingdom title. If not, he is still weakened and there are less counties to siege.

Of course I sack the enemy king's capital as well, and try to make his child son my vassal king. I may get to assassinate the king or capture him in the battle, at which time I can just kill the king and end the war inconclusively, but still gaining his entire kingdom.

All this require you to be able to land females. So my priority is getting the pagan reformation with ANY religion with Equality. Once you get it, it sticks to your realm regardless of your religion changes. I like to play Abbasid, and Zunist is my primary target. I can get the reformation without a war by offering vassalization or landing and murdering the ruler's son.

Sometimes you get to capture adult son, brother, or father of an enemy ruler before you get the pagan reformation. For those, I recommend inviting an African women as soon as the game starts, so that you can give him as a consort to her and then land him.

Are you trying to say that this includes family members who don't reside at your court?

if by 'this' you mean family being taken captive, no, it's just the people who live in that holding. and it really shouldn't happen 100% of the time. could a mod be causing this, i wonder?

Well, this has happened to me in one game. Every time my capital got sieged, everyone went to the dungeon. I would inquire as to the size of your demesne and/or realm.

I've got no idea dude. I'm playing on a clean game with no mods. I once played as a Taoist count on the border of the Mongols. Every time they came to raid my province and sacked it, which happens sometimes every six months in the early game, all of my family gets thrown in jail. It happens 100% of the time. I'd have to have my heir stay in jail until he becomes the monarch because I can't afford to keep ransoming him all the time. It's like whatever roll the game does to chance whether a family member gets thrown in jail or not autorolls to yes logic every time. This latest game I've been playing as the Emperor of the Empire of Brittania. I had just won a crusade and put my sister on the throne of a large muslim realm in France and then I launched a grand crusade war to take control of one of the lower French Kingdoms. They brought a 3k stack to Ireland and managed to sack my capital castle about 5 days before my army arrived. Instantly threw my heir, my son and daughter, their grandchildren, and my wife in jail all at the same time. About 9 close family members in all, which consisted of everyone that lived in that holding that was a close family member. And this happens every single damn time.

That's a war ender and very close to a game breaker. The heir alone is worth 50% warscore. I made 100% occupation warscore and 45% battle warscore in this particular war and I was still about 20% off. Wasted 6 years trying to end the war before Muslim decadence revolt autoended the war for me and broke up the realm. I'd have to occupy every single province in the Kingdom I'm trying to take in just to get the ticking warscore. I literally can't play any advanced wars in the game without babysitting my capital. Because the instant it gets taken, all of my family will get thrown in jail and my warscore takes a dump that's hard to recover from. All it takes is one province in the war objective to be taken by someone else due to another war or something of that notion and I'm trapped in an endless war against infidels because I can't get the ticking warscore.

I'm gonna take a guess that it has something to do with the Windows 7 version of the game because I've spoken to a few of my friends and none of them are having issues. But they use Windows 10 and most of them have upgraded their PC's recently. I just bought the parts for my new build today, so I guess I'll go that route.

Strange, I assume that you owned more castles than just the capital as the Emperor of Brittannia? This sounds like a bug.

If you see that the enemy is sieging your capital, you can try to assign your children to guardians outside of the capital to keep them from being captured. It's not a fix, exactly, but you can potentially save the children from imprisonment.

(Caveat, I'm looking at code from the Holy Fury release, not later patches)

It's supposed to fire about 10% of the time. The on_action code has a random 1000 for nothing, 100 for character imprisoned (and 400 for Aztec Sacrifice and 200 for Rebels Kill Character, but those are conditional and can't trigger in a normal war or raid). Character Imprisoned is event 62100 but the text there doesn't seem odd; mostly just screening for appropriate prisoners (spouses, female relatives and kids).

However, doesn't mean there isn't new code somewhere that's not cooking the books and causing the observed effect. I HAVE been noticing large prisoner hauls lately, more than usual.

...or, maybe it's a crusade or holy war thing? They did add new crusade stuff in HF.

Seriously, why would anyone let his capital sacked not only once but repeatedly in the same game?

If you see that the enemy is sieging your capital, you can try to assign your children to guardians outside of the capital to keep them from being captured.

Luckily, your enemy won't just land and murder your wife to get your son anyway.

I HAVE been noticing large prisoner hauls lately, more than usual.

I have noticed that too. And I enjoy that very much. It makes equality doctrine truly powerful.

There are several modifiers that make taking a prisoner more likely as well, mainly benefiting pagans. :)

That's a good thought and agree on the larger prisoner hauls. I don't remember having this issue since I got the HF expansion. Amazing expansion by the way. I've been playing the shit out of it. I appreciate your reply, yours is the most helpful since you gave me the actual percentage. I had no idea where to start looking.

I don't think it has anything to do with the particular kind of war you're in. I've had this bug happen even with simple viking or mongol raids months after starting without even a war declaration. Tonight after I study I'll run a game without HF enabled and see if that fixes the issue. If it does, then I'm willing to bet it's a bug for the Windows 7 version of HF CK2.

Will update thread later.

Whether it's a raid or not does not affect the chance of prisoners being taken. Pagans and Zoroastrians double the chance of taking a prisoner if the character is a woman.

Anyone who is at least rank 2 in a warrior lodge multiplies their chance by 10 (!), as does anyone who has a reaver bloodline (the ones who give you an extra chance of looting artifacts or taking prisoners).

All these stack, so if you have a warrior lodge member of rank 2+ with a reaver bloodline we get 100*10*10 = 10,000 weight of taking a character prisoner vs. 1,000 weight of not taking them prisoner. Make that 20,000 if the character is female.

This way raiders and attackers can quite easily take most or all potential targets prisoner.

Most insightful!
