I remember reading somewhere that limiting all growable zones, especially residential, to 4x4 plots was optimal for their growth, and that having smaller 1x1s and 2x2s etc. can hamper the growth rate of a zone.

Is this still the case? It seems now I'm very specific about where I actually zone, making sure a plot has developed into a 4x4 before adding more. Is this necessary/recommended?

You might have been reading one of the super min max threads trying to hit the 1 million population hard cap. The reason they were talking about it like that is you generally start hitting other limits before you get to 1 million population. There are built in limits to how many of just about everything can exist for a variety of reasons. So when you are pushing for 1m a 1x1 residential building is taking up the same amount of building cap as a 4x4 residential. I personally get the itch to start a new city long before I start hitting any limits. If you are just playing normally then its ok to have less than perfect zone sizes.
