General Jac Indeed, it has. But they still control about half of China

stnylan I think it looks nice. Well we shall have to finish Japan first, but then who knows…

General Jac I guess that is correct ;)

Terraferma Yes, i think the Norwegians will enjoy their holidays there. Thanks

J. Passepartout We still have some operations left in China, but we have done a lot against them now

lifeless Yes, I agree, but they had most of their forces in China, also remember I did have some American divisions aiding me in the south in the beginning of the invasion

Earth's Savior First we need to finish off Japan ;)

Vincent Julien Well who knows, but in the end Patton isn’t going to control that. Eisenhower is the commander in overall command of the invasion, and I do think that there are some others, including my generals, who would want to have a say about the future of the Emperor. Time will show:)

Nehekara Yes, it was easier than I though. But they have put up better resistance in China though. Indeed Heia Norge :D

GhostWriter Indeed. I agree Heia Norge

Draco Rexus Hehe yeah I guess you can say that, but I remember I was a little angry on him, because I wanted Tokyo for Norway. But now when I look upon it I think he did well and it is ok, the Americans need to get some land as well, and I think the Home Islands divided the way it is now is the best arrangement at the moment :)

Adaptation Yes, I think he is a little afraid now…

Nehekara Thanks

Alexius55 No, it is actually the Turkish navy. Turkey entered the Allies after we had defeated Germany, and in this war they have sent naval forces to the China Sea as well as several divisions marching around in China…

DirtyCommiePuke Indeed, it is Turkey

Allenby Oh don’t worry Allenby, you are excused. I hope your writing went well and that you have delivered a good paper to the university :)

Yes, the Norwegians are involved in several parts of the world, but in this timeline I think it is only naturally seeing how involved Norway as been in the war and the Allies since the Germans decided to declare war upon us. As for your question I have written a small update to answer that….

AllThanks for the continued support. Japan is almost dead now, but we still have a campaign to finish in China, and now they have actually managed to bring up reinforcements and more troops so we shall see how it develops. But for the moment we return to Oslo to hear a little about what Norway thinks and plans for her occupational zones and their future.
Enjoy

The Norwegian conquests and the future

With the war in the Far East going well and the Norwegians having achieved their objectives and conquered the zone that were given to them at the Washington Conference back home in Oslo the politicians started thinking about the future of Norway and her conquered zones.

The Norwegian zone in Germany was on of the largest stretching from the Danish border to the border with the Soviet Union in Poland, including the city of Berlin, although the city was under joined Allied command it was situated in the Norwegian zone, and it was from Berlin that General Ruge controlled the Norwegian occupation zone. There had been little debate and discussion in Norway about the need to occupy Germany and to make sure the country was democratized before the Germans could get more control over their own business again. The danger that Germany had been only two years prior could still not be forgotten, although the Nazi leadership had been removed from power and those captured had been executed. The Stavanger area still scared and destroyed by the fighting in 1940 and all the Norwegians who had fought and given their lives against the Germans was not something that could quickly be forgotten and therefore in the Storting there was complete agreement upon the need to have a strong presence in Germany and make sure that the Germans could never again do as they did in 1940. The Nygaardsvold government was perhaps the strongest force behind continued Norwegian involvement in Germany with the Prime Minister himself stating:

”We never want to see a new 9th of April, and we shall never see a new 9th of April. Therefore it is of the greatest importance that a strong Norwegian presence is kept in Germany for as long as it is needed to make sure that never again shall Norway be invaded. Our presence in Germany is not only working for Norwegian peace and stability, but for the peace of stability of all Europe!”

nygaardsvoldjohan6ab.jpg

Norwegian Prime Minister Johan Nygaardsvold thought it necessary to remain a strong Norwegian presence in Germany for many years

The only party opposed to this policy was the Norwegian Communist Party, but holding no power in the Storting and very little power in the country few people bothered to listen when the Communists tried to convince the government upon the need for breaking connection to the western Allies and start working with the Soviets and preferably hand the entire Norwegian occupation zone over to Stalin. The Communist had little influence and power and due the fear and the threat from the Soviet Union they were kept under close watch and surveillance by the military intelligence and the police.

The newer Norwegian conquests in the Far East were a different matter. Although the Japanese had attacked Norwegian allies and the entire Storting was in favour of fighting the war to the end and standing by the Allies, there were some parties that didn’t understand the necessity in having a strong Norwegian presence and a Norwegian occupation zone in the Far East as well. The war in the Far East had not been one that had concerned the common Norwegian very much, although everyone had heard the tales of the brave Norwegian Marines fighting and winning against the evil Japanese, for the common man in Oslo the war had been over ever since the defeat of Germany. The Norwegian zone in Germany had brought large industrial and technological areas, factories and scientists under Norwegian control and this had given a great boost to Norwegian economy. Although it was still in war production mode, creating supplies and material for the army and the soldiers fighting abroad, more and more goods for the common people had started to hit the streets of Norway and the Norwegian economy was progressing very fine. Therefore the war in the Far East was something that most Norwegians were in favour off and they supported their troops on the front, but still for the common man Norway seemed to be at peace and not at war.

It was because of all this and the claims by representatives from Venstre (Liberal Left) and Bondepartiet (The Agrarian Party) that Norway had never been an imperialist nation that the matter of Norwegian occupation in the Far East was debated in the Storting. Norway had itself been under the control of “the Danish imperialists”, as one representative called them, for several hundred years and therefore Norway had no business of now standing as an occupier and an imperialist in the Far East representatives from Bondepartiet told the Storting. Trying to pass a vote in the Storting on the matter Bondepartiet hoped to get the aid from some members from Arbeiderpartiet (Labour Party) that they knew wasn’t in agreement with the officially policy. But as it turned out even some of their own members turned against them. This was hardly a surprise for Nygaardsvold seeing as his war government consisted of members from all parties he knew he could trust his governmental colleges, and it was known that Høyre (The Conservative Party) was very much against any proposals for Norway not fulfilling its obligations to the Allies. So when the day of the vote arrived Nygaardsvold addressed the Storting:

”Members of the Storting. I stand here before you today because I understand that there are some that favour that we shall not fulfil our obligations not just to our Allies, but to ourselves and not least to the people of the Far East. For almost ten years some of the people in the Far East have lived under Japanese occupation, some have even been occupied by the Japanese even longer. So I tell you this today, we have an obligation to those people; we have an obligation to aid them and give them back their freedom and their democracy. I have to say that I think that if we should turn away now, we are letting the people of the Far East down. The Norwegian presence in the Far East is not one of imperialism; it is one about bringing peace and stability to the world. Something that we can all benefit from!”

After the speech Nygaardsvold received applause from the Storting and the proposal for a Norwegian withdrawal from the Far East was defeated by 146 votes against withdrawal and only 4 votes in favour of withdrawal.
After the vote had been held the leader of the Storting, Carl Joachim Hambro said it Norway had made the right decisions, and promised that the Norwegian presence in the Far East would stay as long as necessary to bring peace and stability to the world.

hambro3uu.jpg

Carl Joachim Hambro, Stortingspresident (leader of the Storting) he remarked that the vote had been important and that it had secured Norwegian presence as long as it was necessary

It therefore stood in the autumn of 1944 that Norway had come to decisions about both presence in Germany and the Far East. Norway would stand by the obligations and the Norwegians would control their occupational zones for as long as it was necessary. The Norwegian zones both in Germany and in the Far East would stay Norwegian and under Norwegian control.

Curse those treacherous Liberals!(Venstre)
It`s good that they failed to drag Storting over to the wrong side though.
I have a hunch that the commies are up to something....

So Norway is staying for the long haul! It was interesting to read about how a debate on the most unlikely of circumstances would unravel - I am sure the politicians are as surprised as anyone that Norway is responsible for half of Germany and Japan.

Who is funding this Herculean war effort? Are the revenues being raised in taxes or by huge loans on the London and New York markets?

I had a dream about this AAR last night. I was out in the nature preserve our university owns, which at some point in the dream changed into the fields back at home, and there were Norwegian and Japanese airplanes flying around in the sky shooting at each other. I don't know if dreaming about this AAR is good or bad but I thought I would mention it.

HJ Tulp Thanks

J. Passepartout Yes, it is stable, and that is very well

stnylan Thanks. More no combat operations coming up…

General Jac Trust me Jac, in this timeline they never will ;)

lifeless I think forever sounds nice;)

Nehekara Yes, we made sure Venstre and the communists didn’t succeed in their plans. The commies are always up to something, especially with our last decisions I guess Uncle Joe isn’t very happy. Glad you like the AAR

Allenby Yes, we are staying for the long haul. Well I am surprised too see Norway control that much. Never expected that when I started the game, back then I only wanted to survive the German attack. So I guess the game has developed very well. Well of course loans and aid from New York and London is aiding, but also our large possessions/occupied areas gives us a lot of nice IC, so they are contributing with a lot of industrial capacity and taxes :)

GhostWriter Thanks, glad you enjoy it

J. Passepartout Nice to know that the AAR are having such great impact that it is invading your dreams. My secret plan to take over the world is working… ;)
Well if nothing else your dream secured you a new update

All Thanks for continued interested and all comments.

I apologise for the lack of updates last week, real life has been very busy. But thanks to JP and his dream I had to write one today, so got one coming up. Once again we trick Uncle Joe and we liberate a country in Central-Europe

Enjoy!

Czechoslovakia

Another question that had been much debated in Norway was a future of the occupied countries. Already before the war had ended a decisions had been reached that Czechoslovakia was to get its sovereignty and independence return to the nation, the same had been decided about Austria. But seeing as several Nazi leaders had been hiding in Austria and that Norwegian mountain troops had been force to conduct several raids and operations in the Austrians Alps to arrest Nazi leaders in hiding it had been decided by Nygaardsvold that the Austrian independence would have to wait until after the country had been cleaned of Nazis and a campaign to make the Austrians understand the necessity of democracy had been finished. Because of words from the commanders on the ground it was decided that this could not be succeeded until late 1946 and all talk of Austrian independence was postponed until 1946.

norwegianforces3ts.jpg

Norwegian mountain troops was forced to conduct several anti-Nazi raids in the Austrian Alps, even after almost two years of peace in Europe there was still Nazi leaders in hiding

Czechoslovakia was a very different matter. Here the Germans had forced the country to give away Sudetenland and had later invaded the country. Also here Allied armed forced had arrested Nazis trying to flee from Germany, but there had been relatively few collaborators and Nazi sympathizers, and the Czechoslovakia leadership was more than willing to regain their independence. In late 1944 there was really only one problem, but that problem was a huge one.

The problem facing the Allied government and the Czechoslovakia leadership was the huge red danger in the east, the Soviet Union. Currently occupying Slovakia the Red Army was standing very close to the new borders of the Czech Republic. This was a question that Nygaardsvold and Churchill wanted to address with the Czech leadership when they arrived in Prague on the 24th of November 1944.

eduardbenestp4.jpg

Czechoslovakian independence leader and president before the war, Eduard Benes was the man that greeted Churchill and Nygaardsvold upon their arrival in Prague. He was also to become the president of liberated Czechoslovakia

Having informed French Prime Minister Daladier before they left Western-Europe Churchill and Nygaardsvold had arrived in Prague with a very clear goal. In order of avoiding Soviet intervention the Allied forces on the border had been increased and strengthened and now the two Allied leaders had arrived to finalize the plans. It was thought best to do things in secret and it had been decided between Churchill and Nygaardsvold that on the 1st of December they would declare that Czechoslovakia was independent once more. By doing this only on the evening of the 30th of November the two was sure they could be able to free Czechoslovakia before the news of the liberation and independence even reached Moscow.

Upon arrival Benes was soon made aware of the Allied plans, and having fought for his countries liberation for years the statesman was said to have cried from happiness when he understood that his beloved country once more would be free. Finalizing the plans for the new Czechoslovakia government during their visit everything went as planned. To ensure the news didn’t reach Moscow only Churchill, Nygaardsvold and Benes was aware of when the independence would happen. Other members of the cabinet was only told that the progress was about to start and that they would need to be ready when they day arrived for impendence. This way Churchill and Nygaardsvold succeeded in tricking Stalin into thinking the Allies had no plans to liberate Czechoslovakia until 1945.

Late in the evening of the 30th of November the three statesmen addresses the Czech parliament together. As the meeting passed and the members of parliament understood what was about to happen, the news was greeted by applause and much joy from the Czech representatives. The largest amount of applause was given to Churchill when he told the assembly, and over the radio the people of Europe:

”This is a historical day. Today we once more give the Czechoslovakian people their independence. Although there are still member of this proud nation living behind the Iron Curtain, we today liberate those that we can liberate and we promise that we shall work so that also those unlucky few living in the east one day can rejoin their countrymen in peace and independence!”

chechliberationmx2.png

On 1st of December 1944 Czechoslovakia was once again independent, and the country at once pledged its support to the Allies and their war against Japan

chechgovernmentvs6.png

The new Czech leadership

Although the independent nation only consisted of the Czech parts of the country the name Czechoslovakia was kept to send a message to the world. A message saying that the Allies considered that Czechoslovakia was still a nation and that the eastern parts of the country was under occupation, and occupation that Nygaardsvold called unlawful and a disgrace to the world. An occupation that the Allies one day hoped to end.

excellent for the people of czechoslovakia, soon the iron curtain will be beat back to the Kremlin itself and destroyed. By any chance what are the troop numbers for the Russians and the amount of ships and tanks? Oh, and of course the air force how does all that look for them?
