English empire? ...

The United Kingdom is a political union of those territories that still acknowledge the monarch's parliament as their government (naturally disregarding the actual political nature, I'm quite aware that parliament is not necessarily beholden to the monarch). It's not a national entity in the same sense as Germany or France. British India was ruled by the Raj, not England. England was ruled by parliament and the monarchy, and as such was part of the United Kingdom.

Great Britain is the term used for the territorial union of all the British isles, so it does include Ireland. It's along the same lines as Grossdeutchland, which would be the territorial union of all Germans, noting of course that there are distinct cultures in Great Britain versus a relatively homogeneous Germany.

Now, we can argue semantics all day. It would be fun to have country tags for each of the entities that make up the UK, for the purpose of civil wars and such. Either way, the empire was not English in any national sense. It was ultimately a creation of "British" commerce and came under the authority of the monarchy, something that can be considered distinctly separate from any specific British nationality. The monarchy wasn't even distinctly English by the timeframe of this game.

Your forgetting Canada, Australia and New Zealand (and some others), perhaps you should add relating to the monarchs Britannic crown. :D

Keep on topic folks, this is about game mechanics to replicate the 19th-early 20th Century, not a forum to discuss contemporary politics.

English empire? ...
I'm not saying we should rename the British empire, but if the ruling country of a colonial empire was England it would be the English empire, no? And the nationality of the monarchy doesn't really mean anything, especially in a constitutional monarchy (e.g. Belgium's king was German)

And, if there was an independent Scottish and Irish crown, England would be the right name for the country.

I am pretty sure Great Britain is a term used the island of Great Britain the largest of the British Isles (not to be confused with the British Islands..) Comparing it with Great Germany is unfair, and doesn't match my geography lessons.

In Danish we have made the issue much simpler though by translating Great Britain to 'Storbrittanien' and United Kingdom to 'Storbrittanien'. Kinda like we translate both the province of Holland and the country The Netherlands to 'Holland' :D

Then again Danes are not known for our political correctness.

The Irish do not consider Ireland as apart of the British Isles.

Great Britain or Greater Britain refers only to modern day England, Scotland and Wales an has always been that way, although the Scots or the Gaels will often challenge this as the Scots are not native to the land we know today as 'Scotland'. The Scots like to point towards Caledonia as being outside of 'Britain' because the Romans gave that area of land a name. Except the Scots don't like to admit that Aberdeen laying within the area of Caledonia has 'British' origins and therefore before the Roman Conquest of Britain the people who resided in modern day Scotland were of the same race as those further south, declaring that Britain is as far north as John O'Groats.

Aberdeen one of the oldest known settlements in North Britain is not a Gaelic name. Aberdeen broken down means the Mouth of the River Dee, an today in Modern Welsh translates as Aberdee instead of the Inverdee in modern Gaelic. Dee itself is also Welsh and many Welshmen such as myself would point towards the River Dee in North Wales rather than the River Dee in North Scotland.

Before the Scots come here to defend their 'Scottishness' and claim Aberdeen as a Gaelic Scottish settlement as they tend to do, I'd just like to ask how many other places in Gaelic Scotland begin with the word 'Aber'. Here in Wales, there are hundreds of places beginning with Aber, such as the most famous Aberystwyth but also Aberglaslyn, Abergwyngregyn, Aberffraw, Abermawdd, Aberhonddu, Aberdaron....an we can go on till the cows come home.

So in Brief, Great Britain refers to the Island from Land's End to John O'Groats an no invader will ever change the minds of the Cymry, the ancient Britons just what Britain actually is.

Good luck trying to find a Scot on these boards who agrees with you on what you think we think of what you think of what you said.

I don't.

Aye.

Whatever Paradox decides to do, the ease of modding of the game will let anyone who doesn't like the setup, etc. to mod things to their hearts content.

This forum is not meant to be a platform for various rival communities to debate ad nauseum ad absurdum the finer points of defining cultural boundaries and whatnot. There is a history forum in the fun forums section for that kind of debate.
